The Bond Deepens
The Bond Deepens
Lyra's POV
The blast knocked me backward into Darius's arms.
We hit the ground hard, rolling behind a fallen tree as more magical blasts flew over our heads. My ears were ringing, and smoke filled the air, but I could feel Darius's heart beating fast against my back.
"Are you hurt?" he asked anxiously, his breath warm against my ear.
"I'm okay," I gasped, trying to catch my breath. "What about the others?"
We'd been fighting covenant troops for what felt like hours. After fleeing the ambush where Seraphina betrayed us, we'd been running through the forest, trying to get back to Haven's Rest. But more enemies kept finding us.
"Jake's hurt but alive," Darius answered, peering over the log. "Thomas is keeping the attackers back, but we're running out of time."
I could hear the sounds of fighting in the distance - Haven's Rest was still under attack. Every second we spent stuck here was another second our friends were fighting alone.
"I have to help them," I said, starting to stand up.
Darius pulled me back down. "Not yet. There are too many covenant dogs out there."
"I don't care!" I snapped, fear making me angry. "Those are our people dying!"
"And you'll be dead too if you run out there without a plan," he said strongly. "Then what good will you be to anyone?"
I knew he was right, but it was hard to think clearly when I could hear howls of pain echoing through the trees. These people had taken me in when I had nowhere else to go. They'd made me feel like family.
I couldn't lose them.
"There has to be something we can do," I said desperately.
Darius was quiet for a moment, thinking. Then he looked at me with a face I'd never seen before.
"There is something," he said slowly. "But you won't like it."
"Tell me."
"I could make a distraction. Draw the covenant troops away from you and the others. Give you a chance to get back to Haven's Rest."
My stomach dropped. "You mean sacrifice yourself."
"It's not a sacrifice if it saves everyone else," he said softly.
"No." The word came out louder than I meant it to. "Absolutely not."
"Lyra-"
"I said no!" I grabbed his shirt, pulling him closer. "I won't let you die for me. Not after everything we've been through."
For a second, we just stared at each other. His eyes were so intense, like he was trying to remember my face. Then, without thinking, I leaned toward him.
He leaned toward me too.
Our lips were almost touching when another blast made us jump apart.
"Movement to the east!" Jake called out from behind another tree. "More of them coming!"
The moment was broken, but I could still feel the warmth where Darius had almost kissed me. My heart was beating so fast I thought it might explode.
"We need to move," Darius said, but his voice sounded different. Rougher.
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.
We ran deeper into the forest, dodging magical attacks and trying to find a safe way home. But the covenant troops seemed to be everywhere, like they knew exactly where we were going.
"It's like they can track us," Thomas panted as we stopped to rest behind some rocks.
"They can," I realized with horror. "Seraphina's crystal. It didn't just drain my power - it marked me somehow."
Darius cursed under his breath. "That's how they keep finding us."
"Can you break the connection?" Jake asked hopefully.
I closed my eyes and tried to feel the magic inside me. There was definitely something wrong, like a cold thread wrapped around my heart.
"Maybe," I said. "But it's going to hurt."
"Do it," Darius said instantly.
I looked at him. "If I mess this up, it could kill me."
"And if you don't do it, we're all dead anyway," he pointed out.
He was right. I took a deep breath and reached for the cold thread with my power. The moment I touched it, pain shot through my whole body like lightning.
I screamed, falling to my knees as silver light blazed around me. The magical link felt like barbed wire, cutting me as I tried to pull it out.
"Lyra!" Darius dropped down beside me. "Talk to me!"
"I'm... I'm okay," I gasped, though I definitely wasn't. Blood was running from my nose, and everything hurt. "I think I got it."
The cold feeling was gone, which meant the tracking spell was broken. But something else had changed too. My power felt different now. Stronger, but also more dangerous.
"Can you walk?" Thomas asked.
I tried to stand up and almost fell over. Darius caught me before I hit the ground.
"I've got you," he said softly.
For a moment, I let myself lean against him. He was so warm and firm, and I felt safe in his arms. After everything that had happened with Marcus - the lies, the fake bond, the way he'd used me - I'd forgotten what it felt like to trust someone fully.
But I trusted Darius. Even when I was scared, even when everything felt impossible, he made me feel like I could handle anything.
"Lyra," he said quietly, so only I could hear. "About what almost happened back there..."
"I know," I whispered. "I wanted it too."
His arms tightened around me. "But you're not ready."
He was right. Part of me wanted to kiss him more than anything, but another part of me was frightened. Marcus had hurt me so badly, made me question everything I felt. What if I was wrong about Darius too? What if this was all just another lie?
"I'm sorry," I said, pulling away from him. "I want to trust you, but I'm scared."
"Don't apologize," Darius said strongly. "Never apologize for protecting your heart. I'll wait as long as you need me to."
The truthfulness in his voice made me want to cry. "What if I'm never ready?"
"Then I'll still be here," he promised. "As your friend, your Alpha, whatever you need me to be."
Before I could reply, a new sound made us all freeze.
Howling. But not from Haven's Rest this time.
This was coming from behind us, and it was getting closer fast.
"They found us again," Jake said sadly.
"How is that possible?" Thomas demanded. "Lyra broke the tracking spell."
I felt sick as the answer hit me. "Because there wasn't just one spy."
Darius's face went pale. "What do you mean?"
"Seraphina couldn't have been working alone," I explained desperately. "Someone else at Haven's Rest is giving information to Morgana. That's how they always know where we are, how they knew about the supply run."
The screaming was getting louder. Whatever was chasing us would be here in minutes.
"If there's another spy at Haven's Rest," Jake said slowly, "then we're leading the enemy right to our people."
"But if we don't go back, everyone there will die without our help," Thomas pointed out.
I looked around at their faces. These brave wolves were ready to follow me anywhere, even if it meant going into a trap.
The screaming stopped suddenly.
In the quiet that followed, I heard something that made my blood turn to ice.
A voice I recognized, calling my name from the darkness.
"Lyra! Where are you, little sister?"
It was Marcus. But that wasn't the worst part.
The worst part was that he wasn't alone.
Standing beside him in the moonlight was someone I'd thought was dead.
Someone who'd apparently died trying to help me escape from the Ironclad Pack.
Elder Thorne smiled at me with eyes that now glowed red.
"Hello, child," he said in a voice like poisoned honey. "Did you miss me?"
