Training Begins
Training Begins
Lyra's POV
"Duck!" Darius shouted as a shadow thing the size of a bus lunged at my head.
I threw myself to the ground just as its claws whistled through the air where I'd been stood. The monster crashed into a tree, splintering it like a stick.
"I can't do this!" I screamed, scrambling backward as more shadow things emerged from the darkness around Haven's Rest. "I don't know how to fight!"
"You don't have to fight them," Darius called back, striking at another monster with a sword that glowed with blue light. "You just have to send them back where they came from!"
"How am I supposed to do that?"
"Use your power! The same way you broke the calling circle!"
I tried to reach for that burning energy I'd felt before, but nothing happened. My hands stayed stubbornly normal while chaos exploded around me.
Elena and the other controlled wolves were still frozen in place, but now they were screaming as shadow things circled them like vultures. Seraphina was fighting three monsters at once, her own power creating whips of silver light.
And I was completely useless.
"I can't!" I sobbed. "It's not working!"
A ghost wolf broke away from the pack and charged straight at me, its red eyes burning with hunger. I closed my eyes, waiting for the pain.
Instead, I felt warm hands grab mine.
"Look at me," Darius said strongly. He'd appeared beside me so fast I barely saw him move. "Lyra, look at me."
I opened my eyes to find his face inches from mine. Even with monsters striking all around us, he looked completely calm.
"You're trying too hard," he said. "Your power doesn't come from fear or anger. It comes from love."
"That doesn't make sense."
"StarBlood magic is different from regular werewolf power," he explained, still holding my hands. "It's not about being bigger than your enemies. It's about protecting the people you care about."
The shadow dog was getting closer, but Darius didn't even look at it.
"Think about Elena," he said. "Think about Sarah. Think about all the people here who received you when you had nowhere else to go."
I thought about Elena teaching me to heal. About Sarah bringing me food and not caring when I broke her plate. About all the dogs who had treated me like family instead of a slave.
Suddenly, I felt it again—that warm power flowing through me like liquid stars.
"Now think about me," Darius whispered.
Our eyes met, and something amazing happened. The moment I focused on how safe he made me feel, how much I trusted him, silver light burst from our joined hands.
The shadow wolf that had been charging at us let out a shriek and dissolved into smoke. All around Haven's Rest, the other shadow creatures began retreating, unable to get near the bubble of protective light we'd made.
"Amazing," Seraphina breathed, dropping her weapons as the monsters fled back into the darkness.
But I barely heard her. I was looking at our hands, where silver sparks were dancing between our fingers like tiny stars.
"What is this?" I asked.
"A mate bond," Darius said softly. "A real one."
My heart stopped. "But that's impossible. Marcus told me the mate bond was just a story to make slaves obedient."
"Marcus lied about everything," Darius said, his thumb drawing gentle circles on my palm. "True mate ties are real, but they're rare. They only happen between wolves whose souls are perfectly matched."
"Souls?"
"StarBlood wolves don't just bond with anyone," Seraphina explained, walking over to us with wonder in her voice. "They can only truly connect with someone whose spirit matches theirs. Someone who can help them reach their full potential."
I felt my cheeks burning. "Are you saying we're... mates?"
"I'm saying," Darius said with a smile that made my stomach flutter, "that your power responds to our link. When we touch, when we trust each other, you become stronger."
As if to prove his point, the silver sparks between our hands grew brighter, and I felt energy rushing through me like I could take on the world.
"But I still don't understand how to control it," I said. "What if I make another mistake? What if I hurt someone?"
"That's why we're going to train," Darius said. "Every day, until you feel confident with your abilities."
Over the next week, that's exactly what we did. Every morning, Darius would take me to a clearing away from Haven's Rest where I could train without accidentally breaking anything important.
At first, it was stressful. My power would either not work at all, or it would explode out of control. I accidentally set three trees on fire, formed a crater in the ground, and somehow made it rain silver light for an entire afternoon.
"I'm hopeless," I said after a particularly bad practice where I'd turned all the grass in a twenty-foot circle into crystal. "Maybe Marcus was right. Maybe I really am imperfect."
"Hey." Darius caught my chin and made me look at him. "Marcus was a lying, violent monster who tried to break your spirit so he could use you. Don't ever compare yourself to what he said."
"But I can't control anything!"
"You're learning," Darius said patiently. "StarBlood magic isn't like normal werewolf abilities. You can't just force it to follow you. You have to work with it."
"What do you mean?"
"Your ancestors were chosen by celestial spirits," he stated. "They were given power not to dominate others, but to guard and heal. The magic reacts to pure intentions, not selfish desires."
"So I have to be perfect?"
"You have to be yourself," Darius amended. "The real you. The one who risked everything to help other slaves. The one who tried to heal a stranger's child even though you were afraid. The one who would rather give herself than let innocent people get hurt."
His words made something click inside me. I wasn't trying to become someone else. I was trying to become who I really was underneath all the fear and shame.
The next time I reached for my power, instead of pushing it, I simply asked it to help me protect the people I loved.
Silver light flowed from my hands like water, soft and controlled. I pointed it at a withered flower, and watched as it bloomed into something beautiful.
"Perfect," Darius said, and the pride in his words made me feel like I could fly.
But our peaceful training was interrupted when Seraphina came running into the clearing, her face white with fear.
"They're coming," she gasped. "All of them. Mother's full army."
"How many?" Darius asked grimly.
"Thousands. And they're not alone." Seraphina's voice shook. "The Shadow Queen is with them. She's promised mother that if she delivers Lyra alive, she'll make her the ruler of all supernatural beings."
My blood went cold. "What does that mean?"
"It means," Darius said, his hand finding mine as silver sparks danced between our fingers, "that we're not just fighting for Haven's Rest anymore. We're fighting for the fate of every living thing on Earth."
Before I could ask what he meant, the ground started to shake. In the distance, I could see a dark cloud approaching—but it wasn't made of storm clouds.
It was made of thousands of flying creatures, all going straight for us.
"How long do we have?" I asked.
Seraphina checked the special compass in her hand. "Maybe an hour."
"That's not enough time to evacuate everyone," Darius said.
"Then we fight," I said, surprised by how steady my voice sounded.
"Lyra, you're not ready for a battle this big."
"Maybe not," I admitted. "But these people are my family now. I won't leave them."
Darius squeezed my hand, and I felt his power flowing into me through our bond.
"Then we make our stand here," he said. "Together."
As we ran back toward Haven's Rest to prepare for war, I couldn't shake the thought that something else was wrong. The Shadow Queen had been waiting for me to awaken my powers. Morgana had been hunting StarBlood wolves for years. And now they were both coming for me at the same time.
It felt too easy. Too planned.
Like maybe this whole thing had been a trick from the very beginning.
But if it was a trap, what was I meant to do? Let innocent people die to save myself?
Never.
As the first enemy scouts showed on the horizon, I made a promise to myself: whatever happened next, I would protect my new family, even if it cost me everything.
I just hoped I was strong enough to keep that promise.
