Strange Powers
Strange Powers
Lyra's POV
The world exploded around me as Morgana's summoning circle triggered, but instead of being pulled away, I felt something inside me snap like a breaking chain.
Light exploded from my body—not the gentle healing glow from before, but a blazing silver fire that shattered the magic circle completely. The force threw all three of us backward, and when the brightness faded, we were still in Darius's hidden office.
"What just happened?" Seraphina gasped, staring at me with wide eyes.
I looked down at my hands. They were still glowing slightly, and I could feel power humming under my skin like electricity.
"I don't know," I whispered. "I felt her magic trying to grab me, and I just... pushed back."
Darius helped me to my feet, his face amazed and worried at the same time. "Lyra, do you understand what you just did? You broke a High Priestess's calling spell. That should be impossible."
"Maybe I'm finally going crazy," I said, trying to make a joke, but my voice was shaking. "First the mending, now this. What's happening to me?"
Before anyone could answer, Morgana's words echoed through the air again, but this time she sounded furious instead of confident.
"Impressive, little StarBlood. But you cannot hide from me forever. I will have what belongs to me."
The voice faded, leaving us in tense quiet.
"We need to get you somewhere safe while we figure this out," Darius said. "My private chambers have protection spells that should—"
"No," I interrupted. "I'm tired of lying. I want to understand what's happening to me."
Seraphina was still looking at me like I was some kind of miracle. "The tales say that true StarBlood wolves could break any magic that tried to control them. I thought it was just a story."
"What legends?" I asked.
"Stories about the first werewolves," she explained. "They say StarBlood wolves were picked by the stars themselves to protect all of our kind. Their power came from pure celestial magic, not dark spells or stolen strength."
"But I'm nobody special," I said immediately. "I'm just a slave who—"
"Stop saying that!" Darius's sharp tone made me jump. "Lyra, you have to stop thinking of yourself that way. You're not a slave. You never were. You're the last of the most powerful family in werewolf history."
I wanted to believe him, but twenty years of being told I was useless doesn't disappear overnight.
"Then why couldn't I use any of this power before?" I asked. "Why now?"
"Because you're safe now," Seraphina said quietly. "Power like yours can't grow in a setting of fear and abuse. It needs trust. Love. Freedom."
The word 'love' made my cheeks burn, and I looked at Darius. He was looking at me with such kindness that my heart did a little flip.
"We should get back to the others," I said, trying to change the subject. "Make sure everyone's okay."
But when we made our way back to Haven's Rest, we found chaos. The dogs Seraphina had put to sleep were awake, but something was wrong with them. They were all standing perfectly still, their eyes sparkling with the same silver light as the magic circle.
"She's controlling them," Seraphina breathed. "Mother must have broken my sleeping spell and replaced it with a puppet spell."
Elena was among the controlled animals, along with Sarah and dozens of others. They all turned to look at us with those strange glowing eyes.
"Lyra," they all spoke in unison, but it was Morgana's voice coming from their lips. "Come to me freely, and I will release these innocents. Refuse, and I will make them tear each other apart."
Rage burst through me like a wildfire. These people had shown me kindness when no one else would. They'd treated me like family. And now this monster was using them as dolls.
"Let them go!" I screamed.
Every electronic device in Haven's Rest started sparking and smoking. Street lights burst in showers of sparks. The radio tower caught fire. Even the magical lanterns that lit the sanctuary started flickering wildly.
"Lyra, you need to calm down," Darius said, but I could barely hear him over the noise in my ears.
"She's hurting them!" I could see the controlled wolves struggling against the spell, trying to break free but unable to move.
"I know, but if you lose control of your power—"
A bolt of silver lightning shot from my hands and struck the ground between us and the controlled wolves. The ground cracked, and several of the possessed wolves stumbled backward.
"I can break the spell," I said, shocked by how certain I sounded. "I can feel Morgana's magic on them. It's like a web, and I can cut the strings."
"That could be dangerous," Seraphina warned. "If you make a mistake, you could hurt them instead of helping them."
"Then what else can we do?" I asked. "Just stand here and watch while she tortures them?"
Before anyone could answer, the controlled wolves started moving toward us in perfect formation. Their moves were jerky and unnatural, like broken marionettes.
"Choose quickly, little star," Morgana's voice came from all their mouths at once. "Submit to me, or watch your friends destroy themselves."
I closed my eyes and reached out with my power, trying to feel the magic threads that connected Morgana to her victims. It was like trying to untangle a massive knot in the dark, but slowly I began to feel the pattern.
"I can do this," I whispered.
I gathered all my energy and pushed it outward, picturing silver scissors cutting through Morgana's puppet strings. For a moment, it seemed to work. Several of the controlled dogs blinked and looked around in confusion.
But then something went horribly wrong.
Instead of just cutting the puppet spell, my power kept going. It cut through every magical barrier in Haven's Rest. The protection spells that kept the refuge hidden from enemies. The wards that kept dangerous creatures from entering. The defense magic that had kept us safe for years.
All of it shattered like glass.
"Oh no," Seraphina whispered. "Lyra, what have you done?"
The sky above us started to turn dark red, and I could hear howling in the distance. Not regular wolf howls—something much more frightening.
"The barriers are down," Darius said, his face pale with terror. "Everything can find us now."
"What everything?" I asked, though I was afraid of the answer.
"Shadow wolves," Seraphina said. "Demons. All the creatures that the safety spells were keeping out."
The screaming was getting closer, and now I could see shapes moving in the darkness beyond Haven's Rest. Dozens of them. Maybe hundreds.
"This is my fault," I said, fear rising in my throat. "I destroyed everything."
"We can rebuild the barriers," Darius said, but he didn't sound sure. "If we work together—"
"There's no time," Seraphina interrupted. "Look."
I turned to see where she was pointing and felt my blood turn to ice.
The controlled dogs had stopped moving toward us. Instead, they were all looking up at the sky with looks of pure terror. Whatever was coming was so bad that even Morgana's puppet spell couldn't hide their fear.
"Lyra," Elena's voice came through the control spell, sounding like she was speaking through water. "Run. Please. Before she arrives."
"Before who arrives?" I asked.
"The Shadow Queen," Elena gasped. "Morgana's... true boss. She's coming... for you."
The howling stopped suddenly, leaving us in horrible quiet. Then the temperature dropped so fast that my breath came out in white puffs.
"That's impossible," Seraphina whispered. "The Shadow Queen is just a myth."
But as we watched, a figure started forming in the red sky above us. A woman made of pure darkness, with eyes like black holes and a crown of thorns.
When she spoke, her voice seemed to come from everywhere at once: "At last, the little StarBlood has awakened her power. How wonderful. I have been waiting so very long to taste the blood of the heavens chosen."
She smiled, showing teeth like black diamonds.
"Thank you, child, for breaking the walls that kept me out. Now nothing can protect you from what you have released."
