Chapter 116 The cost of one
Chapter 116 The cost of one
He arrived at the boundary at dawn.
Elena felt him before Pete radioed in. The entity inside him was already oriented toward her from half a mile out. Stronger than Sera's had been. More defined. More embedded.
She was already pulling her jacket on when the radio crackled.
"Someone at the northeast markers," Pete said. "Male. Alone. Looks rough."
"I'm coming," she said.
Zane was in the hallway. He fell into step without being asked. Arden came from the guest room where they'd been sleeping. All three of them moving through the quiet morning pack house and out into the cold.
The man at the boundary was younger than she expected. Maybe twenty two. Tall but carrying himself like someone much smaller. The specific physical compression of a person whose body had been fighting something internal for a long time. He was leaning against one of the old marker stones with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes on the ground.
He looked up when he heard them coming through the trees.
His name was Cael. He told her that before she asked. Like he'd rehearsed the opening of this conversation many times on whatever journey had brought him here.
"Seven months," he said. "Since one of those cracks opened near my territory. I was patrol. Alone. Stupid timing."
"Same as Sera," Zane said quietly beside her.
"There's a woman here," Elena said. "Sera. She arrived yesterday. Same timeline as you."
Something moved in Cael's face. Relief and something more complicated underneath it. "She made it here. I lost her trail two days ago. We were traveling together for a while. She was faster than me toward the end."
"She's okay. Sleeping. The entity is gone."
Cael looked at her directly for the first time since they'd arrived. His eyes had the quality she was starting to recognize. The look of someone living behind their own face. Present but muffled. The entity taking up bandwidth that should have been his.
"She said you could help," he said. "Before we split up. She said she could feel it pulling and that wherever it was pulling was somewhere that could help."
"I helped her. I'm going to try to help you."
"Try."
"Yes. Try. I won't lie to you about the risk."
He looked at her for a moment. Then he laughed. Short and genuine and completely tired. "Everything about the last seven months has been a risk. At least this one has an upside."
She explained the process. Everything she'd told Sera. The extraction. The gap the entity would leave. The exit shock. The possibility that his system might not manage it.
He listened without flinching. Nodded when she finished.
"I understand," he said. "Do it."
She placed her hand against his sternum.
The entity hit her immediately. Stronger than Sera's had been. That had been a firm handshake. This was two hands gripping. The friction in Cael was significant. More than seven months of embedding could explain. This entity had gone deep fast. Found load bearing places in his system and settled into them like roots into soil.
She felt the Hollow orient toward it. The pull starting.
Then she felt something else.
The entity in Cael wasn't just embedded. It was anchored. Deliberately. Like something had put weight on it. Pressed it down and fixed it in place so that moving it would require moving everything it had attached itself to.
She kept her hand in place. Kept the pull going. Steady.
Cael's breathing changed. Faster. His hand came up and gripped her forearm.
"It's okay," she said. The same words she'd said to Sera. Trying to mean them with the same certainty.
The pull deepened. She felt the entity begin to shift. Pulling away from the anchored points. Each one releasing with a sensation she felt through the contact. Like stitches being pulled from a wound. One. Then another.
Cael made a sound she didn't like. Not the low structural sound Sera had made. Higher. More distressed.
"Elena," Zane said behind her. Warning in his voice.
She felt Cael's pulse through the contact. Racing. Too fast.
The entity was halfway out. Still anchored in three places. She could feel them. Deep in his system. Around his heart particularly. This one had gone for the heart. Had wrapped something around it in the first days of hosting and had been there for seven months.
She had to make a decision.
Pull back. Leave it where it was. Let it re-embed. Let Cael go back to carrying something that would kill him in another year. Maybe less given how deep it had gone.
Or push through. Finish the extraction. Risk what the exit shock of something this embedded would do to his system.
She pushed through.
She pulled hard. Harder than she'd pulled with Sera. The Hollow in her chest focused completely. Every fragment of its gravity directed at the anchored points in Cael's body.
Cael's legs went. Completely. No warning.
Zane caught him from behind. Wrapped both arms around him. Held him upright with his full weight.
Elena kept her hand on his chest and pulled.
The last anchor released.
The entity crossed.
Cael went completely limp.
"Down," Elena said. Zane lowered him to the ground fast. She dropped beside him. Her hand going to his neck. Feeling for the pulse.
There.
Weak. Irregular. But there.
"He's in shock," Arden said. They were already kneeling on his other side. Hands moving to check his temperature. His pupils.
"His heart," Elena said. "The entity had wrapped around it. The release was traumatic."
"He needs to stay warm. Stay still. His system needs time to close what was opened."
Zane had already pulled his jacket off. Laid it over Cael. Was radioing Pete for a stretcher.
Elena sat back on her heels and felt the new presence in her chest.
Different immediately. She'd noticed it in the moment of crossing but hadn't had space to assess it.
This fragment was not settling.
The Hollow had settled in minutes. Sera's fragment had followed within an hour. Clean. Gradual. Finding the source and resting against it.
This one was moving. Not toward the Hollow. Not finding its place. Moving against the other presences. Creating friction not with her but with what she already carried.
She pressed her hand to her own sternum.
The Hollow was responding to it. Not welcoming it. Something more wary than that.
"Arden," she said quietly. "This fragment. Something is wrong with it."
Arden looked at her sharply. "Wrong how."
"It's not settling. It's pressing against the others. Against the Hollow specifically." She kept her hand pressed to her chest. "It feels like the others feel wrong to it. Like it doesn't recognize the source."
Arden went very still.
"That's not possible," they said slowly. "Every fragment comes from the source. Recognition should be automatic."
"I know what automatic recognition feels like. This isn't it."
Cael was breathing more steadily on the ground between them. Still unconscious. Still pale. But stabilizing.
Elena looked at Arden. At the expression on their face. The careful controlled quality of someone running through possibilities and not liking where the logic was landing.
"Arden," she said. "If a fragment doesn't recognize the source. If it creates friction with the other presences inside me rather than settling." She kept her voice even. "What does that mean about where it actually came from?”
