Chapter 115 What this place is becoming
They got Sera back to the pack house.

She could walk by the time they reached the boundary markers. Unsteady at first. Zane kept a hand under her elbow without making it obvious he was doing it. The walk through the trees was slow. Nobody pushed the pace.

Elena walked slightly ahead and felt the territory around her the whole way. The two presences in her chest. The distant multiple things on the horizon of her perception. The specific quality of the morning that had shifted since yesterday in a way she couldn't fully articulate but could feel clearly.

The place felt different. Not wrong. Just changed. Like a room that has had its furniture rearranged in the night. Everything still there. Just oriented differently.

The pack house came into view through the trees. Normal looking. Solid. Lights on in the kitchen. Someone had started cooking something. She could smell it from here.

She thought about what Arden had said. This place is about to become something it has never been before.

She was still thinking about what that meant in practical terms when they came through the front door.

Sarah was in the hallway. She took one look at the unfamiliar woman between Zane and Elena, took one look at Elena's face, and made an immediate decision.

"I'll get a room ready," she said. And went without asking any questions.

That was the thing about Sarah. She always understood the shape of a situation before she understood the details.

They got Sera settled in a guest room. She was exhausted in the deep way of someone whose body had just gone through something significant and needed to process it horizontally. She was asleep before they'd finished explaining where the bathroom was.

Elena stood in the doorway and looked at her for a moment. The lines around her eyes were already softer. Seven months of constant friction gone in one extraction. The body knew. Was already starting to adjust to the absence.

She pulled the door closed quietly.

Went to the kitchen. The whole group assembled naturally. Zane. Arden. Mira at the table with her hands around a mug looking like she'd already heard most of it from Pete who'd apparently been hovering near the front door the whole time.

Elena sat down.

"She survived," she said to Mira.

"I can see that." Mira looked at Elena carefully. The specific look she used when she was checking something she couldn't ask about directly. "How do you feel."

"Different. The fragment is in there now. Two presences instead of one." She pressed her hand against her chest briefly. "The fragment's friction is easing. It recognizes the source. Settling the same way the Hollow settled."

"Any impact on you. On your thinking. Your sense of yourself."

She checked honestly. "No. I'm still me. Both things are present but neither is pressing on anything." She looked at Mira. "It's like having two quiet things in a room. Not loud. Not demanding. Just there."

Mira nodded. Filed it away. "And the horizon. The things you felt moving toward you this morning. Still there?"

"Still there. More than before. When I felt the first one this morning it was one thing at a distance." She looked at the table. "Now it's several things. Still distant. But more." She paused. "The extraction changed something. The pull of the source got stronger. More defined. Whatever was already in motion felt it."

"Like a signal strengthening," Arden said.

"Yes. Exactly that."

The kitchen was quiet for a moment.

Then Zane said, "So we need to talk about what this means for the pack. Practically. Right now." He looked around the table. "People are going to start showing up here. Incompatible hosts. Coming because the thing inside them found the source and followed the pull." He looked at Elena. "How many."

"I don't know."

"Ballpark."

She looked at Arden.

"The incompatible hosts are harder to count than the dispersed fragments," Arden said. "We don't know how many entities went into living hosts during the Void crisis. The cracks were open for months. Any wolf or other supernatural who was near a crack at the wrong moment and vulnerable enough." They looked at the table. "Could be a few. Could be many."

"We need to be ready for many," Zane said. Not a question. A decision.

Elena looked at him. "This pack has been through enough. I won't ask them to take on more without being honest about what it is."

"So we tell them."

"We tell them. Tonight. All of it. What I'm carrying. What it means. What might start arriving." She looked at Mira. "Can you be there? When I explain the older context."

"Of course."

"And Arden." She looked at them. "The practical information. What arrival looks like. What helps. What doesn't. You're the only one with direct experience of living alongside one of these entities long term. The pack needs to hear from you."

Arden looked slightly surprised. Like they hadn't expected to be included in the circle of people the pack would be asked to listen to. "Yes. Whatever helps."

Sarah appeared in the kitchen doorway. Looked at the assembled group. "Is this a closed meeting or can I sit down?"

"Sit down," Elena said.

Sarah sat. Looked at Elena directly. "Tell me what we're dealing with."

So Elena told her. Clear and simple. No softening and no drama. Just the facts in the order they mattered. The Hollow. The source. The fragments. The incompatible hosts. What had just happened with Sera outside the boundary markers. What was moving toward them on the horizon of her perception.

Sarah listened without interrupting. When Elena finished she was quiet for a moment.

Then she said, "So people are going to come here because you can help them the way you helped the woman upstairs."

"Possibly. Probably."

"And you're going to help them."

"If I can. Yes."

Sarah nodded slowly. "Then we need more guest rooms." She looked at Zane. "And we probably need a better perimeter system. So we know when someone is approaching before they reach the boundary markers." Back to Elena. "And you need to sleep properly. Every night. Non-negotiable. Because whatever you're doing takes something out of you and you can't run empty."

Elena looked at her. "I feel fine."

"You look fine. You'll look less fine after the third extraction. Or the fifth." Sarah held her gaze. "I watched you for months during the Void crisis. I know what you look like when you're burning through reserves you don't have. We're building in rest before we get there this time."

Elena looked around the table. At Zane who was nodding. At Mira who was nodding. At Arden who was watching Sarah with the specific expression of someone recognizing competence.

"Alright," Elena said. "We plan properly."

They stayed in the kitchen for two hours. Building a framework. Practical and concrete. Guest capacity. Patrol adjustments. Communication protocols for when someone arrived at the boundary. How to assess an incompatible host before attempting extraction. How to know if extraction was safe to attempt.

Arden contributed more than Elena had expected. Three hundred years of accumulated observation. The kind of knowledge that didn't exist in any text because it had been lived rather than written.

By the time they finished the afternoon light was coming through the kitchen windows long and low.

Elena stood up. Felt the two presences in her chest. Still settled. Still quiet. The horizon of her perception still showing movement. Several things. Slow but consistent.

She looked at Arden. "The entities in incompatible hosts. The ones that are being drawn here. Do they know what's drawing them?"

"No," Arden said. "They just feel the pull. They don't understand its source."

"But the hosts feel it too. They feel their entity pulling and they follow."

"Yes."

"So the hosts who come here." She looked at the window. At the evening settling over the territory. "They're following something they don't understand. Toward somewhere they've never been. Trusting a pull they can't explain." She paused. "That takes a certain kind of person."

"It does," Arden agreed.

"What kind," Zane said.

Elena looked at him.

Then at Mira.

Then at Sarah.

At the people who had followed her through the Old Ones and the Void and the Hollow without a guarantee of any of it working out.

"The right kind," she said quietly.

She went to stand at the kitchen window. Looked out at the territory. The evening light. The trees at the boundary.

Felt something on the horizon shift. One of the moving things changing direction slightly. Orienting more precisely.

Not hours away anymore.

She pressed her hand flat against the window glass. Cold and solid.

"Arden," she said without turning around. "The extraction with Sera. The fact that she survived. The fact that the entity settled in me without friction." She paused. "Does that mean every extraction will work the same way. Or was Sera's survival specific to her situation."

The kitchen was very quiet.

"We did one," Arden said carefully. "We have a sample size of one."

Elena looked at the tree line.

At the things moving toward her in the dark.

"So the next person who arrives," she said quietly. "The next extraction."

She turned from the window.

"Could it kill them?”
