Chapter 79 Promises under the rain
Chapter 79 Promises under the rain
~ Ronan’s POV ~
This meeting was by far the worst I had ever had. Why did I even fucking attend it?I checked my wristwatch again, groaning when I figured out I had two long hours left. I had promised to take Nyssa out to the movies, and I wouldn't go back on my promises now.
I stood up, about to leave, when Cosmos called out.
“What's the rush, Mr. King?”
“I have to take my wife to a special place today.”
“Oh, I didn't know she was awake. With that kind of coma, I'm guessing one would suffer from temporary amnesia.”
I hated Cosmos. He had always had this idea that he was better than everyone. Maybe the masters in medicine and two honors in business made him think that way.
“I don't see how that's any of your business, Cosmos.”
He smiled. “I apologize. I don't mean to be rude.”
“Good.”
I didn't wait for any more talk as I dashed out of the boardroom. Fuck this meeting anyway.
By the time I got home, it had started raining. Nyssa stood by the entrance, an umbrella clutched to her breasts and a raincoat on her. She had noticed my car, and a smile spread across her face. A little frown appeared across my forehead.
It's not that I didn't love to see her smile—if anything, I would risk my life to see her smile. But knowing that I was the reason she was in this position hurt me more than I could admit. She ran to my car with a second umbrella in hand. I got out and pulled her close to me immediately.
She froze, hands on my racing chest. The air was cold; I could feel her breath on mine.
“Why are you in the rain?”
“You said we would go to the beach later today, and I did get ready. But the rain suddenly started so heavy.”
“Yes, and now we can't go to the beach. I'm sorry.”
She smiled instead and reluctantly rubbed her palms across my forehead, right along the frown lines.
“Let's dance in the rain,” she giggled.
“I'm sorry… what?”
“Let's have fun!” I closed the car door and walked back to the door. No one was outside, not even my men. Understandable, it was freezing outside, and some of them must have gone to rest.
“It's freezing outside, babe,” I said.
Nyssa paused, and I could tell it was because of what I had said. I had promised to call her by her name, but I couldn't help myself when those nicknames just came out of nowhere.
“You need to relax, and dancing in the rain is the best form of relaxation.”
She pulled off her raincoat, revealing the little red thong and bra she had underneath. Her soft, porcelain skin shone with the fabric clinging to her body.
She walked into the rain, ass moving on its own underneath that tight material.
Focus, Ronan.
She turned, her hair sticking to the side of her face. She was glowing underneath the rain, and it was different from anything I had ever laid eyes on. The swelling of her breaths enraptured me like a dead man as I counted every breath.
“Come on! The rain is relaxing!” she shouted, sticking out both her hands as she spun underneath the heavy drops.
Instinctively, I pulled at my tie and loosened it, removed my shoes, and walked right into the rain. I loved how happy and free she looked. This was all I had ever wanted, all I had ever prayed for her.
Calder thinks that my fear is her finding out what happened. He tries to reassure me that the accident and everything that happened that year wasn't my fault, but it was. There was no need to sugarcoat it. It was my fault—everything. And no, my deepest fear wasn't her finding out what really happened. It was her hating me when she got her memories back. Memories I had promised to help her remember.
I suck, I know. But there's nothing I can do. I am in love with her. She is the one I breathe for, the one I burn for.
I watched her as she danced in the rain. Carefree, happy, smiling like there wasn't any other problem in the world. My beautiful flower.
My baby.
She stopped and turned to me.
“What?” she asked.
“Nothing. I just love watching you be happy.”
“You're not playing in the rain. What's wrong?”
“Nothing is,” I lied.
“I think now I know when you're lying.”She held my hands and placed them on her chest. “I don't know much about you, Ronan. I barely know you,” she laughed.
“But being with you makes me feel comfortable, and I feel at peace. For some reason, I do believe you care about me. And I…”
“You?”
“I care about you too,” she confessed.
That was enough for me. Hearing that she cared about me was enough for me.
“I just hate seeing you sad.”
“I'm not.”
“You haven't told me what would happen when you get your memories back.”
“I haven't figured it out yet. Besides, I know that we are married, so there's that. I'll be happy if I get memories of our marriage.”
I tried to swallow, but it felt as if there was a lump in my throat.
“You're not saying anything, and your face… What's wrong, Ronan?”
If I tell you, you'll hate me.
“Just promise me,” I drew her near. “Promise me you'll do what's best for you when you get your memories. Promise me you will take care of yourself.”
She didn't say anything, and I could tell she was trying to figure out why I was worrying so much.
“I promise,” she finally said.
She continued playing in the rain, and I couldn't help but watch her. I laughed when she kicked her legs in the rain and almost tripped. When she stuck her hands under the rain and tried to hold the water in her palms for a long time.Thank goodness there was no one else around, only the two of us.
And I did what I had never done in my life. I did what I never believed in. I prayed to whoever was up there…for a fresh start for her.
And for forgiveness.
