Chapter 67 - The Prosecutor
Jon sat in the interrogation room across from Andy and Dennis with a smirk on his face. He hadn't asked for an attorney yet, but he would eventually. He knew there really wasn't a point in having an attorney when he flaunted all of his crimes online and even bragged about them.
"Do you have anything you'd like to say?" Dennis asked, letting his disdain for him be heard in every word. Jon shrugged.
"What's there to say? I killed a lot of people. I think about killing people all the time because I get off on it. Think about the best orgasm you've ever had and multiply it by a thousand. That's how it feels when I cut those whores into little pieces. Although when I get out of here, I think I won't only kill women. I'll kill men, too. After all, blood is all the same color no matter who you are." He started laughing like a maniac as Dennis and Andy stared at him with disgust.
"You were good at disguising yourself. Even walking right in front of several officers as a woman without them realizing it until after you'd left. Why did you insist on sticking around to get Natalia rather than taking off?" Andy tried to sound like he admired him even though he wanted to pull out his gun and shoot him between the eyes.
"Everything I did was her fault. She broke up with me, and I was so distraught I started killing to make myself feel better." When Andy looked at him with disbelief, Jon started laughing again.
"Yeah, even I don't believe that anymore, but it was convincing to others to get them to help me. The truth is I was mad because she was supposed to be my first kill. I had been planning it for months. She had no family and only a couple of friends, so her disappearance would hardly have been noticed. I was just waiting for her to say she was ready for me to take her virginity. Then I was going to tell her I wanted to take her somewhere special. Once we got there, I would have taken her virginity, followed by her life. She broke up with me and ruined my plans." Jon shook his head like she'd done him a huge disservice.
"I understand she was supposed to be your first kill, but you still didn't say why you stuck around even after you got free." Dennis wondered why Jon hadn't asked for an attorney yet. They dotted all their i's and crossed all their t's, so this interrogation was admissible, but he didn't seem to care.
"You know how it is with the one that got away. You're never satisfied until you put the past to bed or, in Natalia's case, to death. I couldn't let her get away. I couldn't go on my true killing spree without taking her out first." Jon still planned on getting her. He wasn't deterred; it would happen eventually. There was always someone out there looking for a payday, and he had lots of money saved. Just as he was about to say something else, there was a knock on the door. Dennis and Andy both stood up and walked out.
"That was quite a show going on in there. Why doesn't he have an attorney present?" Dennis glared at the prosecutor, who was standing with her arms crossed. He didn't care for Sofia Spurling. All she cared about was her winning record, not the victims.
"He was read his rights, and he declined an attorney," Andy answered her. Sofia was pretty with short black hair and a tall, lean figure. However, people tended to dislike her immediately when she opened her mouth.
"Why would a man with as many murder charges as him not want an attorney. I swear if you fuck this up for me, it will be both of your heads." Sofia looked at Jon through the one-way window, ignoring the two men's glares. She had two goals with this case. One was to boost her career on the national level by putting away this century's biggest serial killer. The second was to get Hayden back.
They'd only had sex one time a couple of years ago, but it was all she could think about. Sofia hadn't been with any man since, hoping he would come around eventually. She had seen his declaration of love for Natalia on the news, just like everyone else. Still, she knew the right woman could come between even those deeply in love. Tomorrow she was going to go pay the loving couple a visit to go over the case. It would be the first opportunity for Hayden to start falling for her.
"You can leave now. We'll finish the interrogation, and you can watch the video later." Dennis didn't want her to mess up their flow, but he should have known it wouldn't be that easy.
"No, I think I'll stay. Let me introduce myself to him so he can see it will be a woman kicking his ass in court. There won't be any deals in this case, and I want as many people as possible to testify against him." She could already see the tears in the juror's eyes as they looked at poor beautiful Natalia with her legs in casts. Granted, Jon didn't cause the broken legs, but it would still tug at their hearts. She'd never met Natalia, yet wondered why so many people wanted her dead.
Andy and Dennis exchanged a look. They knew as soon as she went into the room, Jon would ask for an attorney. He was talking to them because he felt like he was bragging, but with someone like Sofia, he would shut down. When they walked into the room, Jon's smirk fell.
"Who is she?" He asked the men ignoring her.
"I'm Sofia Spurling, the prosecutor who's going to make sure you never get to touch another woman," Sofia declared smugly. Jon looked past her to Dennis and Andy.
"Well, since the fun is over, I want an attorney now. Please bring me a phone, so I can make a call." He stated. Jon picked up on the type of woman Sofia was. She was a self-righteous bitch, and he had no interest in talking to her. After he called an attorney that was going to take a nice portion of his money, he was shown to a cell. He laid down on the cot and went to sleep. Funnily enough, it was the best sleep he'd had in years.

The following morning Hayden and Krista were helping Natalia get ready. The wheelchair's arm was removable, so she could slide from the bed to the chair or toilet to the chair with help. Hayden had always just preferred to lift her. Right after she was dressed, his phone rang.
"Hello," He said as he helped straighten Natalia's t-shirt. He was determined to do as much for her as he could. Hayden admitted he was glad for Krista's help. She was extremely gentle with Natalia, and he could tell they were already good friends.
"Mr. Sumner, this is Sofia Spurling. I'm the prosecutor who is prosecuting Jon McCrae. I would like to come and meet with you and Natalia if that's okay." She held her breath, hoping her name would be familiar to him. However, disappointment washed over her when she heard him sigh.
"Does it have to be today? We had a long day yesterday." Hayden looked at Natalia and didn't want her to even think about Jon today.
"I would prefer to get it over with so we can get him sent to prison as soon as possible." Sofia knew she didn't need to meet with them so soon, but that wasn't going to stop her.
"Fine, but make it quick. How soon can you be here?" She did a little happy dance. It was time for her to put her best foot forward to make him start falling for her.
"I can be there within an hour. See you soon, Hayden." She couldn't help trying to sound sexy before hanging up.
Hayden didn't know why this woman was so intent on meeting with them today, but he would make her leave if she started getting too aggressive. He knew the district attorney and would ask him to assign someone else if she upset Natalia in any way.
"Who was that?" Natalia asked, noticing his frown.
"The prosecutor she wants to meet with us. She'll be here in an hour." He replied before leaning down to kiss her. He pushed her out of the bedroom, and they all ate breakfast. Not even an hour later, their doorbell rang. Hayden opened the door to the tall, dark-haired woman. She looked vaguely familiar, but he didn't know why.
"Ms. Spurling, I presume?" He asked, sounding annoyed. Hayden saw her smile falter.
"Yes," Sofia answered. She tried to hide how crushed she was that he didn't recognize her or show any interest in her at all.
Hayden opened the door, so she could come in, and without looking back, he walked over to Natalia, where she was sitting on the couch. Sofia followed and saw another couple on the other end of the long sectional. She recognized Krista, but not the man next to her.
Sofia felt her heart in her throat as she watched Hayden lovingly push Natalia's hair away from her face and kiss her forehead before sitting down behind her so she could lean on him. Everyone was staring at her, and she tried to smile.
"Hello, I'm Sofia Spurling. I'll be prosecuting the case against Jon McCrae. I promise I won't take too much of your time." Natalia was the only one that smiled at her, and she couldn't help feeling slightly bad about her intentions.
"It's nice to meet you. Please sit down. It's going to be nice seeing a powerful woman take down that bastard." She said, and Sofia felt even more like a fool. She took a seat in the middle of the two couples. She returned Natalia's smile despite not wanting to like the blonde woman. Not many people were friendly to her because of how she used them. She swallowed before continuing. She was debating bringing up her and Hayden's past. She looked at him and decided it was worth it. Sofia wanted him to hold her like he was holding Natalia.
"Thank you. Before we get started, I need to tell you something."
