Chapter 14 No Divorce
Nora's face turned even more awkward.
Elizabeth sure had a way with words!
Elizabeth continued, "You're 23 this year. If you get pregnant now, you'll have the baby at 24, which is perfect timing!"
Nora thought for a moment and decided to be honest with Elizabeth. "Grandma, Steven and I aren't really close."
They hadn't even dated!
Jumping straight into a loving marriage wasn't that easy.
"Do you like Steven?" Elizabeth was pretty open-minded and wasn't in a rush. She knew Steven had a cold personality and wasn't easy to win over.
"I... Grandma, you want the truth?"
"Of course."
Nora softly told Elizabeth, "I feel friendly towards him, but it's not love. You know, Steven can be pretty harsh with his words sometimes."
"Absolutely!" Elizabeth agreed wholeheartedly. "He often hurts my feelings too."
"And mine," Nora echoed, finding a kindred spirit in Elizabeth.
"What are you two talking about?" Steven walked in, his cold gaze fixed on them.
Were they talking about him?
Caught red-handed, Nora felt embarrassed and said to Elizabeth, "Grandma, I need to change and get to work."
She tried to leave, but Steven grabbed her wrist and pulled her close, towering over her. "What did you tell my grandma?"
Steven had a faint, pleasant scent.
Nora took a light sniff, almost dreamily answering, "Grandma asked why we're sleeping in separate rooms."
To Steven, she looked like she was craving him.
He frowned. "What did you say?"
"I said our relationship isn't that close yet."
Steven nodded. "That's right, we're not that close. Don't get too attached to me. Control yourself."
Nora went silent.
She had just thought he smelled nice, and now he thought she was some kind of lecherous woman?
Nora was helpless. "I'm not craving you!"
With that, she ran to her room to change.
When she came out, Elizabeth had already left, and Steven was returning from seeing her off at the elevator.
She wore a fresh floral dress, like a breeze on a summer day.
Steven's eyes deepened.
Nora was indeed beautiful enough to make it hard to look away.
"Aren't you leaving?" Nora asked while packing her laptop.
"Do you bring your laptop home every day?" Steven asked.
"Yes, it's the only one I have. I need it to continue working at home." Nora replied, putting on her shoes. She glanced at the sparkling diamond ring on her hand and smiled, her eyes gleaming.
Steven pondered for a moment and then left.
Downstairs, James was waiting by the Maserati. Seeing Steven approach, he opened the car door.
"Mr. York!"
Steven got in and casually instructed James, "Get two desktop computers, one for the master bedroom and one for the guest room. Make sure they're high-performance."
Working on a desktop was much more comfortable than on a laptop.
"What?" James was confused. Wasn't Steven planning to get a divorce? Why buy computers?
"And bring my important documents over. The study here is still empty. If I'm going to work here, I need to set it up."
James was stunned. "Mr. York, you're not getting a divorce?"
Steven shot him a stern look. "James, I think you need a change of scenery. Go to the wilderness and start from scratch. Have your brother, Clarence Smith, take over."
James was on the verge of tears!
What had he done to offend Steven?
At the office, Amelia immediately noticed Nora's jewelry.
She was practically sparkling as she walked in, her delicate skin making it impossible to miss!
"Wow! Such a big diamond ring, bracelet, necklace, and earrings. Nora, did you hit the jackpot? How did you get all this jewelry?" Amelia grabbed her hand, admiring it from every angle.
"My husband's grandma gave them to me," Nora whispered.
As for the other colleagues, she didn't plan to tell them. They weren't that close, and she didn't want to be accused of showing off.
She and Steven had only gotten their marriage certificate without a wedding or photos. If Bianca found out, she'd definitely accuse her of being a gold digger.
"This watch..." Amelia held her hand, frowning slightly. "It looks so familiar. Where have I seen it before?"
Amelia found the watch familiar but couldn't place it.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Nora looked at the time on the watch. She thought it was beautiful and delicate, a testament to Elizabeth's good taste.
"Nora, did you buy a diamond ring?" Hazel, who had been talking to Amelia and Nora, joined in.
Hazel was a fair-weather friend, getting along with everyone but showing a different face behind their backs.
Nora didn't like her and ignored her.
Feeling snubbed, Hazel walked over to Bianca and said, "Bianca, I saw Nora bought a diamond ring. Isn't her family poor? How could she afford a diamond ring?"
The whole company knew about Nora's poor family, thanks to Bianca.
Hazel knew Bianca disliked Nora and enjoyed mocking her to curry favor with Bianca.
Bianca was touching up her makeup. Hearing this, she glanced at Nora.
Nora was talking to Amelia.
Bianca saw the big diamond ring on her hand, worth at least several thousand dollars!
Bianca sneered loudly, "Nora, how could you afford a diamond ring? I heard your dad's in debt from gambling. Shouldn't you use that money to help him instead of buying useless jewelry?"
She said it loudly enough for everyone to hear, including Nora and Amelia.
Nora knew why.
The Reed family wanted her out of the company but couldn't say it directly, so they let Bianca harass her.
"Bianca, did you eat garbage? Why are you so nasty?" Amelia retorted.
Amelia never liked Bianca, who had no real skills and only threw her weight around because she was Willie's sister.
"You ate garbage!" Bianca snapped at Amelia. Amelia had been with the company for over a year, earning good commissions. Willie might favor Bianca, but he wouldn't fire Amelia over a few arguments.
