Chapter 91: Urgency

Chapter 91: Urgency
Mirage’s P.O.V

“No, I’m gonna try again!” I told her firmly.

Just like Freya taught me, I tried to concentrate on the air around me, on the natural flow of energy of the earth. Witchcraft and Fae magic, both were based on the conversion of energy from one form to another. So I concentrated on the air, the wind energy around me and started the conversion.

My brows furrowed in concentration as I felt perspiration bead my forehead. The small sparks of light that appeared out of thin air made me want to huff in relief, but it wasn’t a win until I could turn it into a ball of light with the same energy as the sun. It was the only way I could defeat a vampire.

The sparks increased, started forming in the shape of a crescent…slowly getting bigger and bigger and…

The ball of light disappeared as I lost the threat of power that I had been desperately holding on to.

“Fucking hell!” I cursed at the walls as sweat dripped down my nose. “Again!”

“Mirage…is there a reason why you’re pushing yourself so hard all of a sudden?”

Freya’s question gave me pause. Picking up the towel from the floor, I wiped my face of all the sweat and looked at her with her frown. “What do you mean?”

“Alex said you had another nightmare last night.” She informed me. “He said you told him it was one where you see he is struck by lightning…but he feels like you’re not telling him all of it.”

“So he asked you to enquire about it instead of asking himself?” I asked her incredulously. “What kind of logic is that?”

“Trust me, I have no clue.” She shrugged her shoulders and stretched her arms above her head. “I think he feels that you and I have a connection because of our magic. And probably that dreams can sometimes have meanings and he feels I can help you interpret them.”

“Can you do that?” I frowned. “Interpret dreams?”

“Nope. No one can.” She shook her head as the wind from the trees blew her hair off her face. “But…I think you should discuss this with your mate. He’s been stalking you for a while now.”

“Huh?” I looked around the clearing where Freya and I had been practicing, this time in broad daylight, because the invader from last time hadn't been caught and vamps hated sunlight.

It was probably because I had been so focused on trying to master the process of creating one of my light balls outside of my body that I had missed Alex’s form leaning against a tree a few meters away from us, but now that he had been spotted, he simply stood up straight and started making his way over to us like he hadn't just been caught stalking.

“You guys should clear things out.” Freya said as she began making her way back to the packhouse. “Talk about whatever is bothering you.”

Alex gave me a sheepish smile as he came to stand in fr0nt of me; shifting awkwardly from one foot to another with his hands in his pocket. “So…?”

“Why exactly are you asking Freya the stuff you should be discussing with me?” I frowned. “Isn’t that what mates are supposed to do?”

“I don’t know, Mirage. You tell me.” Alex’s sudden serious tone caught me off-guard. “You shut me off last night and you wouldn’t tell me what you saw in your dream. And now, here you are, training desperately like you’ll be going off to war or something.”

He didn’t know just how close he was to the truth but I couldn’t admit that to him. Not now, not ever.

“You’re right, my instinct keeps teeing me there might be a battle soon.” I decided to go with half-truths. “It’s like Alpha Charles said; Alistair might contact us any minute now to tell us what he’ll want in exchange for Julian’s life and I think we all know what it’s going to be. So I do want to stay prepared for when the time comes that I have to finally face Alistair.”

“Who says we’re just going to hand you over to that rotten bastard?” Alex snapped, looking up at me sharply. “No matter what he says, I think we can all agree that no one will let you go to him alone.”

“What if there isn’t a choice, Alex?” I asked him desperately. “What if that’s the only way to save Julian’s life?”

“Then we will find another way.” He told me firmly. “I don’t care if I have to cut off an arm and a leg, Mirage, but I’m not letting you go to that bastard ever again.”

Oh, Alex…if he only knew the truth…

I shook my head, running a hand through my hair. “There’s no telling what might happen tomorrow. So I’d like to stay prepared for everything. If only I can use this damn power-”

“Alright.” Alex sighed, placing his hands on my shoulders. “Fine. I’ll take your ridiculous idea into consideration this once, just as a possible scenario.”

I looked up at Alex as he lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes.

“But you’re forgetting one vital information.” He told me. “You’re a hybrid, Mirage. You’re just as much wolf as you are Fae. In choosing your Fae powers over your wolf over and over again, you are suppressing your wolf side and that’s not a good thing. The antidote is already working, so you don’t need to worry about becoming a rogue ever again, but let your wolf in as well. Let it know that you accept it, you welcome it.”

The voices that were once inside my head were now quiet and I think a major reason for that was because now I had direct access to my powers. But ever since I had learned of my Fae origin, I had to admit that I had pretty much ignored my wolf side. My Fae side fascinated me, gave me hope about defeating Alistair…something I couldn’t say about my wolf side.

But Alex was right about one thing. I was a hybrid, equal parts wolf and Fae. So I couldn’t ignore my wolf side for long either, because I got my wolf from my mother…my mother who sacrificed herself trying to save us.
