Chapter 148 CHAPTER 148
JACK
I braced my hand around the doorknob and stepped into my office, observing Miller slouched against the floor-to-ceiling window, busily tapping away against his screen.
“Can you tell me why we couldn’t talk on the phone?” I cut to the chase, visibly annoyed and even more so when I had to separate from my heartbeat so early in the fucking morning.
“I have a location to show you, sir.”
“This had better be good, Miller. I have a pregnant girlfriend at home I want to fucking be with.”
“This is it, Sir.” He pulled out a location on his phone, pining it to my face. “I triangulated an area, it so happens your brother had been hiding in the ruins for weeks.”
“Are you sure about your source?”
“Positive. Do I call the police?”
“You can. Let’s go pay my foolish brother a visit, shall we?” We strode out, matching to my car in precision and speeding away. My mind only fixed on one thing only; this bollock ends today, at least for Mason. I patted the fabric of my side pocket, making absolutely sure I’d brought along my weapon of destructive.
“We have a hint. We’ll need backup, bring vests in case he tries to shoot.” Miller rapped down the line before ending the call, putting his phone away.
I hit the accelerator a little too hard, hoping to reach the deserted place in a nanosecond. I had to get back to Robin as fast as this fucking war would allow me and smooth things over with her. I wasn’t going to let it delay me.
I didn’t like how awkward I’d left things with her and I certainly hoped to God she wouldn’t have a fit when I had to tell her all about it. All I yearned was her safety and I was going to give her that through hell or a fucking deadly hurricane. I heard my phone buzz, instantly registering it would be Robin. I chewed over my next move for way too long and finally decided to bite the bullet. Picking up the phone, I spoke softly in a lame attempt to land gracefully on her understanding side before I dropped the news that I wouldn’t be returning home any sooner than I’d envisioned because we had a trace on Mason’s whereabouts and if we were lucky, we’d pick a whiff of Millicent’s too.
I wasn’t a happy man.
And though her reaction was warranted with her hurling angrily at me, I wasn’t backing down. I loved her too fucking much to have her constantly on edge every fucking time. I was going to handle it.
“Yeah turn left… that’s right.” Miller pointed far ahead before I parked in a kerb of the crappy neighbourhood—getting out and shutting my side of the door before rounding the car to enter the ruins, not waiting for Miller to catch up with me. I busted the door open and saw a nervous fucking twat clambering to his feet, backing away as he crawled on all fours… such a pathetic sight.
“There’s no way to turn, Mason. Surrender.” I stood tall, rolling my shoulders and cocking my head. I looked exactly how I felt, a dangerous man who shouldn’t be fucked with. I must have been on cue because right that instant the blaring of loud police sirens sounded in the distance, closing in on us. My lips twisted in a cunning smile. “You’re surrounded arsehole, Give up!”
“Not a chance!” He backed up, I took a step forward, readying myself to lunge and gain on him if he made any silly attempt to run.
One or both fuckers would go down today, it was a fucking promise.
“Mason, do not fucking take another step backwards.” I warned, slowly bracing around my pocket, feeling the gun through my fingers and gently drawing it from its hiding place.
“I’m not going to prison, do you fucking hear me! You stole everything from me!” He yelled. “First, it was Robin…” I scoffed, rolling my eyes. Robin was never his to begin with.
“Then my fucking money—you want my freedom too?”
“Unfortunately, I do—yes. I want your fucking freedom, you’re a threat to my family.”
He gave a sardonic chuckle. “Robin should’ve been mine!” He howled, swiping across his brow with the grimy end of his sleeve.
“Yet here we are… you without her, and me —making mind blowing love to her every fucking day. And, you know what Mason? She tastes so fucking glorious, she’s the best fuck I’ve ever had.”
I jeered, goading him, letting him lose his shit. He was going to know just how fucking good Robin’s pussy was, and it gave me so much satisfaction rubbing it in his shitty face.
“Incredible, actually. She’s mine, Mason. Get. Over. It!”
“FUCK!” He roared, his shout ear-splitting, hyperventilating like the cowardly loon he was before moving several paces away. I inched forward, hauling out my gun and aiming it directly at him, pointing to his midsection.
“Don’t push me, Mason. Do not fucking move!” I wouldn’t think twice pulling the trigger if he fucking messed with me.
“I’m not going to prison. Life without Robin is fucking unbearable as it is.” He retreated, sharply turning on his heels, aiming for a narrow window just on his left. I fired two bullets away, stopping him dead in his tracks, suspending over the open window with blood seeping from his side. I lunged towards him, bringing him down onto my laps. His drowsy eyelids fluttering.
“You made me fucking shoot!” I choked softly, my voice wavering.
“I’m sorry, Jack. Everything I did, I did for Robin. I wanted her back at any cost.” He spluttered, streaks of blood rushing down the side of his mouth. “If you hadn’t shot me, I’d try again and again to have her… even… even if it meant hurting you.”
Fuck! My heart splintered.
Even though I clearly heard him say he would’ve hurt me over and over again, I was hurt by the grotesque sight. After all, he was my fucked-up brother! He was still family.
“Don’t die on me, you fucker! Hey!” I jerked his body violently, willing life to bounce back into him. He slowly curled his arm around my neck, drawing me closer to his mouth before whispering something in a wheeze, giving out. The room was stomped with officers in no time as they gingerly removed Mason from my grip, pushing me up to my feet. I cleared my taut throat, then the tears from my eyes before huffing out, yelling for the police in my wake.
Our mission wasn’t completed—one more fugitive to go!
