Chapter 192 The Escape
Chapter 192 The Escape
DAMON’S POV
Adam reached for Elena's hand.
The moment their skin touched, silver energy exploded outward. His concealment abilities, her raw Phantom strength, combining into something I'd never seen before.
The strain showed immediately.
Adam's nose started bleeding. Elena's hands shook so badly she could barely maintain the connection.
But it was working.
The facility walls began to fade. Like our minds couldn't quite focus on them. Then we started disappearing too. Marcus first. Then Ivy. Then me, watching my own hands become transparent, then invisible.
Kira gasped as she vanished. "I can still see myself."
"That's normal," Adam managed, his voice strained. "You're inside the concealment. Everyone outside won't see or hear us."
Complete concealment for seven people.
“Impossible,” my wolf said with reluctant admiration. “He's doing the impossible.”
"Everyone stay close," I ordered quietly. "Move together. No sudden movements."
We formed a tight group with Adam and Elena at the center, maintaining the concealment. Kira leaned heavily on Ivy. Marcus and I took point and rear guard positions.
We moved toward the door.
Outside, Alliance soldiers had tightened the perimeter. I could see them through the facility windows, twenty wolves positioned in a coordinated pattern, watching every exit.
"They can't see us," Adam reminded everyone. "Just stay calm. Walk normally."
We stepped outside.
An Alliance soldier stood five feet away, eyes scanning the area. His gaze passed right over us without registering our presence.
“It's actually working,” my wolf said, amazed.
We walked through the siege line directly through their formation.
It felt surreal and wrong, somehow. It was almost like reality itself had bent to Adam's will. I mean, I’ve seen Ivy’s powers but this is just… new.
Elena's breathing was labored. The effort of channeling this much energy was destroying her, but she didn't falter. Adam looked worse. Blood was dripping from his nose, he was trembling, his degrading body was being pushed beyond its limits. But the concealment held.
Halfway to the aircraft, Adam stumbled.
Just a small misstep. But for a split second, maybe half a heartbeat, the concealment flickered.
We became visible. Then invisible again.
But half a heartbeat was enough.
An Alliance soldier's head snapped toward us. "There! I saw something!"
"Run," Adam gasped.
We ran.
The concealment held for another minute. Alliance wolves converging on our position but unable to see us, tracking only sound and disturbance in the snow.
Then Adam collapsed completely. He went down hard, and Elena caught him. And we all became visible again.
Fifty feet from the aircraft. It was close enough to see but too far to reach safely.
"Go!" I shouted. "Elena, Kira… get Adam to the vehicle! Everyone else, defensive formation!"
The alliance wolves saw us instantly. Shouted commands, shifted, and charged. Twenty wolves against five defenders and three non-combatants. We’re fucked.
Ivy's suppression flared outward. Three attackers dropped, unable to shift, their wolves forcibly contained. I intercepted the first one to reach us. Redirected his momentum, used his own strength to throw him into two others.
Marcus fought with brutal efficiency. No wasted movement, just decisive strikes that dropped enemies fast. Kira tried to help by using concealment to hide herself and Adam, but she was too weak. The ability flickered uselessly.
Elena dragged Adam toward the aircraft. He was unconscious, deadweight, bleeding from his nose and ears.
"Cover them!" Ivy shouted.
More Alliance wolves converged. Half shifted to fight physically, half stayed human with weapons. A bullet grazed my shoulder. Pain flared but I ignored it. Marcus took a blade across his ribs but didn't slow down. Ivy's abilities were working overtime, suppressing enemies, enhancing our speed, creating openings where none existed.
Elena reached the aircraft. Got the door open, dragged Adam inside. Kira stumbled trying to climb in and fell. An Alliance wolf lunged for her.
Ivy appeared between them in a blur of Phantom speed. Her suppression hit the wolf point-blank, dropping him instantly.
"Get in!" Ivy ordered Kira.
The girl scrambled into the aircraft.
"Fall back!" I shouted to Marcus.
We retreated in coordinated stages. Marcus covering while I moved, then switching.
Ivy held the defensive line alone for ten seconds. God I love that woman.
Then we were all in the aircraft. Marcus at the controls, engines already running. Ivy slammed the door as Alliance wolves reached us. We lifted off as claws scraped against the body of the plane.
Three wolves tried to follow by jumping. One actually caught the landing gear before Marcus executed a maneuver that threw him off. They pursued by vehicle for miles, but we crossed into protected Canadian territory before they could intercept.
Finally, we were safe.
Relatively.
Adam didn't regain consciousness during the flight. Elena held him the entire way, whispering things I couldn't hear. Promises, apologies, desperate pleas.
Dr. Cross examined him remotely via video link, her expression growing grimmer by the minute.
"The concealment effort accelerated his degradation catastrophically," she said. "His cellular structure is breaking down faster than I've ever seen. He has hours. Maybe less."
"Can we stabilize him?" I asked.
"Not with conventional treatment. The only thing that might save him is the cure he developed. But..."
She didn't finish. Didn't need to.
The cure required the subject to survive the initial injection. Their body had to fight off the old enhancement and accept the new genetic modification. In Adam's condition, that shock might kill him instantly.
We landed at Crescent City just after midnight.
Medical teams rushed Adam to intensive care. Maya and Lucas were already there, prepared for the treatment.
All four Project Nightshade subjects in one location for the first time in fifteen years.
Dr. Cross had everything ready. The synthesized treatment, dosing calculations, emergency protocols if something went wrong.
But Adam was too weak. His vital signs were failing. Blood pressure dropping, heart rate erratic, oxygen levels dangerously low.
"We can't administer the treatment yet," Dr. Cross said. "His body wouldn't survive it. We need to stabilize him first."
"How long will that take?" Elena demanded.
"I don't know. Hours. Days. Maybe…."
"We don't have days," Maya interrupted. She was standing in the doorway, having slipped past guards. "I can feel it. Adam's dying right now."
She moved to his bedside, looked at her brother she'd last seen when she was six months old.
"Please don't die," she whispered. "I just found you."
Lucas was wheeled in moments later. Too weak to walk, but conscious enough to understand what was happening.
"Do it," he said to Dr. Cross. "Give him the treatment. It's his only chance."
"It might kill him," Dr. Cross warned.
"So will waiting," Lucas countered.
Elena sat by Adam's bed, holding his hand. Talking to him about childhood memories he couldn't hear. About Maya as a baby. About the family they could still be. Fuck, it was painful to watch. My eyes were almost bleeding.
"I'm sorry," she said. "For everything. For not knowing about the program. For not saving you. For fifteen years of searching for the wrong child while you suffered alone."
Adam's eyes fluttered open. Barely conscious.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "For everything. For taking Kira. For threatening Maya. I just wanted to save everyone."
His voice was so weak we had to strain to hear.
"You did save us," Maya said. "You found the cure. Now you have to survive to see it work."
Then his eyes closed. The monitors screamed warnings. His blood pressure critical, heart rate failing, respiratory distress. Everything was happening all at once.
"He's crashing!" Dr. Cross shouted.
Medical staff swarmed. Trying to stabilize, to bring him back, to keep him alive long enough for the cure to maybe work.
But Adam's body was giving up. Fifteen years of degradation, accelerated by one desperate act of concealment.
He was dying.
Elena looked at Dr. Cross with tears streaming. "Save my son. Please."
Dr. Cross met Ivy's eyes. Asking for permission. For the decision that might save or kill Adam.
Ivy's face was anguished. We hadn't tested the cure. Didn't know if it worked. But we were out of time.
"Do it," Ivy said.
Elena echoed immediately. "Do it. Save my son."
Dr. Cross grabbed the synthesized treatment. Four vials, one for each subject.
"We have to administer simultaneously," she reminded everyone. "All four at once or none of them."
The medical staff moved with practiced coordination. One vial each for Maya, Lucas, Kira, and Adam.
"On my count," Dr. Cross said. "Three. Two. One. Now."
The four needles were injected simultaneously.
Then suddenly, Adam's monitor flatlined, completely.
