Chapter 14: The Hidden Room
Chapter 14: The Hidden Room
I was still processing the night before when Alexander turned to me, his eyes cold as ever, and ordered, "Come."
I had no choice but to follow him. We got into one of his chic black cars, and the driver quickly took us to another mansion, which was even more opulent than the last. I thought my life couldn’t become more complicated, yet I was wrong. Alexander had emphasized that my safety, and my situation, was far more complicated than I had ever imagined.
When we arrived, I followed him inside, unsure of what to expect next. The place was stunning, but it felt like a different world altogether. The walls were lined with dark wood, expensive art, and antique furniture. But what struck me most was the silence. There was something haunting about this place, an eeriness that made the air feel thick with secrets.
“Why are we here?” I asked finally, breaking the suffocating silence.
“You’re safer here,” he replied,
“Where is vee? I don’t see her following us” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper and fear.
"No need to worry about Vee, You’ll stay with me," Alexander replied, glancing over his shoulder
I froze, my heart suddenly racing. “What do you mean, stay with you?”
his voice clipped. “Since Vee isn’t with us tonight, you’ll share my room.” He didn’t stop or turn to acknowledge my protest.
My footsteps faltered. “Share your room?”
I was left standing in the middle of the foyer, uncertain, confused, and with a growing sense of unease. Was I really this much of a pawn in his game? Was my life truly just a series of moves on his chessboard?
“You heard me.” His frigid blue eyes met mine for an instant, yet they held no warmth.
I trailed behind him up the stairs, attempting to sort through it all, but my thoughts were a chaotic whirlwind of feelings.
He unlocked the door and walked in. I pursued, only to stop dead in my tracks.
“Wait, there’s only one bed,” I said, my voice shaky.
“Observant,” Alexander replied dryly. He strode to the sofa and tossed his suit carelessly over the armrest. “You’ll take the bed. I’ll take the couch. Can’t have you sleeping alone. Too dangerous.”
“Dangerous?” I echoed.
“Not even Vee could protect you if someone wanted you bad enough,” he added, his tone matter-of-fact.
I swallowed hard. The reality of my situation was suffocating. Sharing a room with Alexander Levi felt like a punishment. The lavishly furnished bedroom, with a large bed in the center and dark curtains drawn around the windows. It looked luxurious, yes, but it also felt cold, like everything else in Alexander’s world.
As I stood frozen, he started unbuttoning his shirt. Blood stained the fabric, a gruesome reminder of the events earlier.
“What are you doing?” I blurted out.
Alexander glanced at me, his expression unreadable, and his voice dripped with a strange coldness. “I need to shower. Or do you like that man blood on me?” he said, his eyes narrowing slightly as if daring me to challenge him.
I wanted to resist, to look away, but I couldn't. There was something in his tone that made my heart race, and I couldn't help but glance at his bare skin while he lifted the shirt over his head. He was nearly there now, and as he faced me, I couldn’t help but observe his athletic build. He was more towering than I had envisioned, his abs sharply defined, and his dark hair was disheveled, something I had never witnessed before. He appeared… distinct. Even vulnerable.
His eyes met mine, and the strength of that stare caused me to stop. “Why are you looking at me like that?” he inquired, his tone soft, his mouth twisting into a grin. "Have you never encountered a man without a shirt?"
I was taken by surprise. "You're looking at me as if I'm some meal," I whispered, my face turning red.
Alexander lifted an eyebrow at me, and his grin grew larger. "Meal?" "Don’t speak of matters you don’t understand, or you’ll come to regret it," he warned, his tone growing ominously sharp.
I gulped, my heart racing. "What are you trying to say by that?"
He did not respond. Instead, he began to walk towards the bathroom, casting one last look over his shoulder. “Cease your staring and head to bed,” he ordered, his tone cutting like a whip.
I felt the urge to argue, to seek further answers, but I couldn’t force myself to act. The moment the bathroom door shut behind him, I let out a trembling breath and gazed at the spot he had vacated. The space seemed more cramped now, the atmosphere thicker.
For a brief period, I questioned whether this was truly the life I was destined for. Should I have faith in him? Can I rely on anyone in this mansion? Alexander Levi had demonstrated to me that appearances were deceiving, and my reality was filled with darkness, mysteries, and falsehoods.
The night went by without incident, yet sleep stayed a remote idea. The quiet of the mansion surrounded me, and the only noise I could detect was the faint buzz of the structure adjusting. The heaviness of the happenings from the previous night, the murder, the bloodshed, the intense feelings, prevented me from sleeping. My thoughts whirled with countless inquiries that would not be resolved.
Then, just as I thought sleep might finally come, I remembered something else. Something even more unsettling.
I glanced toward the sofa. It has been hours.
Alexander had left. The area next to me was vacant, and I experienced an odd discomfort taking root in the depths of my stomach. He isn't present in the room. But what is the reason? Where had he departed to?
I couldn’t disregard the sense that something was wrong.
I got up from the bed and headed to the bathroom, resolute in my effort to dispel my unease. As the warm water flowed down on me in the shower, I found myself mulling overAlexander’s physique, his strength, his unrefined power, and how exposed he appeared without his shield of clothing and dominance.
He was a man who had seen a great deal, yet parts of him stayed concealed beneath layers of restraint. It both scared and fascinated me.
"I never imagined a man's physique could appear so great," I reflected internally, a soft voice in my mind cautioned me against thinking about him in this way.
Once I finished showering, I left the bathroom and put on my clothes. I only understood that I had been waiting for him to come back after I exited the room. I was unaware of the reason. A feeling deep within me, an unexplainable urge, was prompting me to locate him, to comprehend him, or maybe, to unravel the enigma of this peculiar, shadowy realm he had introduced me to.
I started to stroll down the corridors, my steps resonating in the quiet. The estate was excessively silent. Excessively motionless. With every turn I took, it seemed I was venturing further into the unfamiliar, and I couldn't help but sense that someone was observing me.
While I moved along a long, deserted hallway, I noticed a door slightly open at the far end. An urge of curiosity tugged at me, and without hesitation, I moved closer to it. The door slowly opened with the lightest of nudges, exposing a concealed room I had never seen before.
Within, the space was crowded with antique furnishings, dusty bookcases, and peculiar, overlooked recollections.
But what caught my attention were the photographs, old, faded images, most of them of Alexander as a child. His eyes, even then, were the same piercing icy-blue. But it was the woman in the photos that took my breath away.
It was his mom. The sorrow in her eyes was undeniable. It felt as though these memories formed a sanctuary, a compilation of moments that Alexander could never release.
A family portrait captured my attention in one photograph. In the image, a young Alexander stood next to his mother, gripping her hand firmly. The picture appeared serene, yet there was a shadow lurking beneath it, a sadness that attached itself to each detail.
All of a sudden, I heard footsteps coming up behind me. I was paralyzed.
“What are you doing here?” A soft voice inquired, breaking the stillness.
I spun around, my heart racing. In the entrance stood Alexander. His gaze locked onto me, and I realized, in that moment, that I had just discovered something far more perilous than I could have ever envisioned.
And then, before I had the chance to speak, he moved closer, reducing the space between us.
"Leave," he murmured, his tone a caution.
