Chapter 13: The First Bond
The mansion was peculiarly quiet, except for the sporadic noise of footsteps reverberating through the corridors. I paced back and forth in the opulent room they had provided me, my mind swirling with numerous ideas. Max Carter. Alexander. The delicate, perilous realm I currently lived in. How did I find myself in this situation? Was there any way out of the turmoil that had engulfed me entirely?
As I looked out the window, a loud, sudden crash echoed from the hallway outside my door. My heart fluttered within my chest. The quietness that previously felt so stifling now appeared as a ticking time bomb. There was something off. I sensed it in the atmosphere.
I naturally edged toward the door, my heartbeat increasing. A wave of panic tightened around my chest. Living in a perpetual state of fear of uncertainty was one matter; experiencing that fear approach ever so slowly, akin to a stalking predator, was quite another.
I grabbed the handle, but just as I was about to twist it, the door burst open unexpectedly with great intensity. My breath caught as Alexander stepped into the doorway, his expression stern and his body rigid with determination. There was no indication of the typical cold indifference; his eyes shone with intensity as he looked at me.
“Stay back,” he ordered, his voice rough. “Get away from the door.”
I halted, unable to understand, and the hairs on my neck bristled. The man appeared in the doorway, outlined by the faint light of the corridor, and I couldn't identify him.
“Who sent you?” Alexander growled, moving ahead and placing himself between the unfamiliar person and me, his hand automatically reaching for the firearm hidden at his waist.
I stepped back, panic coursing through my veins. The man's eyes sparkled with cruelty, and the soft noise of a sword being drawn sent a chilling tremor through my body.
“I’m here for her,” the man stated, his tone deep and menacing. "Consider this a warning, Alexander."
The words stung like a slap, but the way Alexander stiffened only confirmed the severity of the situation. The man was here for me, and Alexander’s usual icy composure cracked under the weight of that threat.
I didn’t understand. Why was I so important? What was it about me that made Max Carter and others like him so eager to hurt me?
I wished to talk, to inquire, but the words were lodged in my throat. The atmosphere between Alexander and the man buzzed with tension, making me feel like an outsider in a realm far too perilous for someone like myself.
Alexander’s gaze flicked to me for a brief second, his eyes narrowing in a warning I couldn’t ignore. “Stay back,” he repeated, his voice low but firm. “This is none of your concern.”
The stranger smirked, his gaze flicking from Alexander to me, then back to him. “You think I’ll just let her go? You think she’s safe in here? Max doesn’t leave loose ends Alexander.”
Before I could understand what was going on, the man suddenly rushed forward, advancing toward me. My heart pounded in my chest, and in that moment, Alexander struck with incredible quickness.
The noise of a gunshot reverberated down the corridor, and I recoiled, my breath momentarily halting. The man fell to the ground, his body convulsing briefly before becoming motionless.
My stomach twisted as I looked at the body, unable to grasp what had just occurred. Alexander had taken his life, without hesitation, without mercy.
"Never do that again," he told her, his tone frosty yet infused with another emotion. Fury. And perhaps... a sense of protectiveness?
I hardly had time to absorb his words before he faced me, his expression gentling just a bit as he came closer. "Are you okay?" he inquired, his voice no longer the authoritative rumble it typically was.
For a brief instance, I was unable to respond. My mouth felt parched, my legs shaky. I had never encountered a man so cruel in my life. However, in that same moment, I noticed something unique about him. An element that clashed with the chilling mafia chief I had come to dread.
"I'm okay," I murmured, my tone hardly distinguishable as I stepped back.
Alexander's gaze remained on me, seemingly looking for any indication of harm. Once he was convinced that I was unharmed, he simply nodded. "You should exercise more caution," he remarked, his voice tightening again.
“I didn’t..” I started, but the words died on my lips. I hadn’t asked for any of this. I hadn't made the decision to be trapped in the middle of this conflict. Nevertheless, I found myself ensnared in a lethal game that I couldn't comprehend.
“Not everything is under your control,” Alexander said, his voice low but filled with meaning. “You need to trust me. When I say stay back, you stay back.”
I wished to dispute, to express to him that I wasn’t just a powerless piece. However, I was unable to. Not after he had just taken a man's life to protect me.
The space seemed cramped as his words lingered in the air, loaded with unexpressed tension. At that moment, I understood something I hadn’t completely owned up to, I was attracted to him. Despite everything, the peril, the chill, the anxiety, there was an aspect of him that captivated me, something I couldn’t dismiss.
His gaze darted to the door, and he stood tall, his whole demeanor reverting to the tough, merciless mafia leader I’d initially met. "I'll make sure the location is safe," he stated. “You’re staying with me for the night.”
I couldn’t tell if it was a command or a protection, but I found myself nodding anyway.
“Now, get your things. You’re coming with me,” he added, his voice leaving no room for protest.
I swallowed hard. “Where are we going?”
“To a safer room. You won’t be alone again,” he replied without looking at me.
I nodded again, although a part of me was unsure if I felt comforted or scared. My thoughts were still spinning, the sight of the man lying lifeless on the ground ingrained in my mind.
While I collected my belongings, I couldn’t ignore the sensation that everything had just changed. The threat was nearer than it had ever been, and the individual I considered my foe was transforming into something altogether different.
I couldn’t help wondering: Was this truly protection or was it something else entirely?
