Chapter 20 A break
“Wait, are you saying Alpha Kael accepts humans in the pack?”
Chloe nodded once, a smile displaying on her face as she continued to gist me about the Morwel pack.
The pack sent my mother and me out when I was young. But who knew Alpha Kael wasn't like his father?
But at this moment, I don't know if I would like to go back, after I escape this place.
“How do you know so much?” I asked her suddenly.
Chloe has been telling me about how benevolent Alpha Kael is. I used to have a strong hatred towards that pack, but somehow that view is changing.
It looks like Alpha Kael is the opposite of Alpha Lucian.
Come to think of it, it's almost five in the evening, and I haven't seen Lucian today.
Not that I miss him. In fact, I'm glad I don't have to see his face before I leave.
My gaze darted at the wall clock at every moment. I couldn't wait for night to come so I would escape. But Chloe was doing her best to keep me entertained and enlightened.
“Well, I've worked for Alpha Kael. He's the most gentle Alpha I've ever seen,” she looked away dreamily. “Honestly, between Alpha Kael and Alpha Lucian, I have no idea who is more handsome.”
“Really?”
I guess all alphas are very handsome.
“If you used to work for Alpha Kael, why did you leave?”
“Well,” she seemed to hesitate. “It wasn't like I left.”
As she said this, a sigh escaped her. I felt intrigued almost immediately.
“Yes? Tell me,” I probed.
She looked at me for a moment. “So, there was this man named Caleb. We were getting so close, and I thought perhaps we were going to be mates, but he eventually found his mate. I had to leave for my own sanity.”
I felt moved on her behalf. “Your reason is valid,” I assured her.
“And well, just four months later, I saw an employment opportunity here. You can't imagine how happy that made me feel.”
Now, I know why she was so enthusiastic.
“Anyways, I'm glad I'm working with you,” she smiled, getting up. “Is there anything I can get for you? Or what would you like for dinner?”
My gaze darted at the wall clock again. It's already six!
Good grief! It's almost time.
“Anything is fine actually.”
“Then, I will be back.”
I watched her for a moment. Chloe is really the opposite of me. If she had the opportunity I had, she would have claimed it.
But maybe she would have preferred Alpha Kael than Lucian.
Lucian is like the devil itself. No wonder everyone fears him.
“I got you some spaghetti bolognese, with some fried turkey,” Chloe boomed suddenly, pulled the door open, and walked inside, carrying a tray.
I sat up. “What about the Alpha. Isn't he back?”
“Not yet,” she responded and I released a sigh of relief.
That's good.
Chloe continued to tell me different things while I ate, though I was just partially engaged.
It was quarter past seven when Chloe left for her room.
I got up instantly and pulled the blanket together. I started to make ropes with the pillow cases too.
When the blanket was secured, I threw the leftover over the window. Then I used the pillow case up.
When I got up, I realized with dismay that I was probably standing in one of the highest rooms. The floor suddenly looked far away.
But what can I do? I have to try every means. Also, the window not only offers a view of the compound but also the surrounding bushes beyond the walls.
So, if I'm not careful enough, I could land in the compound.
While I was contemplating, I saw a tree whose branch was extending over the fence. Perfect!
I got to work instantly. My stomach felt heavy and a bit bloated. I think I'm going to have indigestion.
Well, that's a second issue. I will handle it when I'm out of this place.
After much hassle, I'm able to cross the fence. I crawled on the fence to reach the tree very well. The tree is, in fact, so close over here.
Perfect, I climbed on it easily.
Now, I'm at the other side of the house. I looked back at the window and a face was suddenly staring at me from there.
My heart leapt in my heart.
Who was that? Chloe? Or Lucian?
I didn't wait to find out, actually, as I started to crawl towards nowhere in particular, my heart beat making it difficult for me to think properly.
Strangely, the tree was longer than I thought.
“Aria, are you trying to run again?” That same dangerous voice whispered so close to me.
I screamed and increased my speed.
How did he get here so fast? Why is he so fast? I spent over thirty minutes trying to cross over and he did it within a twinkle of an eye.
“Aria!” Lucian snapped, his hand grabbing mine.
I let out another scream. “Let me go you monster!” I threw kicks at him, not minding where they landed.
He released me suddenly and I made a run for it again.
I didn't even know where I was going or how I was going to land. But I wanted to be anywhere other than here.
“Aria!” He called suddenly, almost close now.
I increased my speed, but when I looked up, he was suddenly standing in front of me.
My heart skipped a beat, then hammered continuously in my chest. How?
A dark frown was on his face and not the usual soft expression I was used to.
“What do you really want from me? Let me go!”
“I said you are going nowhere!” He yelled, clearly annoyed. “I brought you! And now, you are mine!”
No, you think I'm yours because I'm your mate, and I'm not ready for that.
“Aren't you a liar?”
He furrowed his brows. “I'm taking you back,” he uttered and reached out to me.
“Lying that I am yours because my stepfather sold me, but I'm your mate, aren't I?”
His arm stopped mid-air, as shock flashed through his eyes.
“How?”
“And you dare force me to stay with you! You wicked soul! Get out of my way this instant! Or I will find another way out!” I warned, as I adjusted backwards slightly.
He was soon over the shock. “You are mine, Aria no matter the reason. It doesn't matter. I own you now!” He declared, his voice thick with emotion.
“I belong to nobody!” I yelled again.
“Stop!” He said suddenly, stopping me in my tracks. “You will fall. Come back here,” his voice was suddenly soft and alluring.
Ignoring him, I adjusted further back, until a branch broke under my weight, but I caught myself before I dropped with it.
“See? Come here or you will fall,” he tried to convince me.
I regarded him for a moment. What difference does it make?
Without another thought, I jumped into the air and closed my eyes.
