Chapter 39 Learning What I Really am
Chapter 39 Learning What I Really am
Alex loaded me up in a wheelchair. It made me feel strangely smaller and weak. But my ankles were throbbing, and I was so very tired. She brought me to a lovely room. Alex told me this was the guest room I could stay in as long as I needed or wanted. I looked around, and it was perfect. It was practically made for me. It even had a mini-fridge. I chuckled. Of course, he would have a mini fridge in a guest room. I could only imagine what expensive drinks it was filled with. Right now, I couldn't care less. The oversized bed was calling my name. It looked so comfy. Alex helped me into bed. It was the perfect balance of Soft and fuzzy. I practically melted into. I didn’t even realize I fell asleep until I felt something shift on the bed.
Sleep little one
I was or am? I don’t know. I tell the voice that I now know is the white wolf.
You are half awake. Rest, It will help you heal.
Okay Fine. I tell the white wolf.
Our Mate Will wake you soon.
Our mate?
Yes
Are you really here?
Yes. I would normally find those disrespectful questions. But I know you do not know of the world you really belong in.
What does that mean?
Rest. He will help you understand.
I did as I was told and fell into a deep sleep. It was strange to sleep without dreaming of running through the woods. I guess even mentally, I was drained. Maybe that is why I dreamed of the white wolf talking to me in bed. What felt like only moments later, I felt a shift in the bed. I didn’t need to open my eyes to know who was in here with me. I would recognize that smell and the warmth anywhere now. That thought scared me.
“Hi, Luka.” I mumbled out. My voice was raspy and sore.
“I am sorry if I woke you. I just wanted to check on you. Make sure you are okay.” Luka’s deep voice soothed me. I tried to sit up so I could wake up and look at him.
“No, just lay down and rest. Are you hungry?” Luka asked.
“A little. How long have I been out?” I asked. I keep losing track of time.
“About 16 hours?” Luka mused. How did you sleep? Alex left the ibuprofen on the counter here for when you wake up. She didn’t want to bother you.”
“I think pretty good? I had a dream that the white wolf came and lay with me. Other than that, no dreams.”
“I don’t think that was a dream, Danni…” Luka’s Voice Trailed off.
“What?” I asked him. Why wouldn’t that be a dream? It had to be. It made no sense. How could I talk to a wolf? Then it hit me. I saw and spoke to the black wolf that showed up in my dream that one time. “Wait…” I began to put together a puzzle I had no idea was apart in my life. “The white wolf is real…? Like the black wolf is?” I said it as if it were a question. Luka didn’t answer me as I worked through this. “They can both speak to us?” I mused out. Then I remembered what the black wolf said to me. “I am his. He is mine. We are one. Like you and the white wolf… Luka, what does that mean?”
“It means you are a wolf shifter.” Luka was watching my reaction.
“What…? How?” It didn’t feel real. But somehow it made sense.
“We don’t know. We have been trying to figure that out since the night of the fire.” Luka said.
“We?” I looked at him. Vision still blurry, but his blue gaze burned through it.
“The Holloways,” Luka stated simply.
“The Holloways? What do they have to do with any of this?” I asked, confused.
“They are shifters, too,” Luka answered
“What? How. I have known them my whole life. I have never seen a wolf near them, like the black and white wolf.” Now the puzzle was larger and more confusing. What was going on? Why would they hide what they are to me? Wasn’t I family? Betrayal burned like acid in me. I wanted to curl up and cry.
“I know. This is a lot to take in. But I need you to breathe.” Luka placed both hands on my shoulder. I didn't even realize I'd begun hyperventilating. I took some deep breaths, calming my racing heart. Luka was right, this was a lot to take in. My sides began to hurt.
“What's wrong?” Luka sat up straighter, looking down at me.
“It hurts.” I pointed to my sides
“It must be your broken ribs. You haven't taken anything yet for it, so lets get something in you.” Luka gets up, moves to the mini-fridge in the room, and comes over to me with a bottle of my favorite root beer and my favorite dessert, Raspberry shortcake.
“Thank you,” I take them from him. Well, I tried to at least.
“No, Lay back, I am going to feed you,” Luka ordered.
“I can feed myself,” I pushed back
“I know. But let me do this for you.” Luka asked.
“Why?” I questioned out loud. I didn’t mean to, but it came out anyway.
“I need to feel useful to you. Right now, while you're injured, I can’t do anything. And that bothers me. So please let me be useful Danni.” Luka’s plea rang like a bell in my mind. There was something more he wasn’t saying, But I dont think I could handle anything more right now.
“Okay.” I tell him and he smiles happily at me I smile back. As he bagan to feed me the first slice of cake a memory from another dream came to mind.
MATE
I began coughing up the cake as I choked on the words. Mate. There was no way… or was there? Nope. Not thinking about what that could mean if the wolves from my dreams were real.
