Chapter 38 Choosing Distance
Chapter 38 Choosing Distance
I sat in shock from what Alex said. It took me a minute to realize Luka Stood over by me. Nose flaring. I hope it wasn’t from anything I did.
“What's wrong?” I asked
“You… Are… Hurt…” Luka bite out each word like it was difficult to speak.
“You knew that? I was confused. He carried me out knowing I was attacked.
“Knowing… And… Seeing…” He was practically growling at this point. I could tell he was struggling to keep it together.
“If you can not keep it together. I will remove you.” Alex told Luka and his head snapped to her so fast. It was unnatural.
“You…” Luka growled.
“I will do what is best for her.” Alex pointed a finger at me and Luka looked back at me. Taking a deep breath. I watched as his shoulders relaxed.
“I will stay as long as she wants me here” Luka stated. As much as I did want him here. He was clearly bothered by injuries he can see. I know I had worse ones where he couldn’t see. What if he lost control? What would happen?
“Its okay. I think I would like to be alone right now.” I tell him.
Hurt filled his gaze. “Are you sure?” he asked.
“Yes. I will be okay. Alex will take good care of me.” He opened his mouth to argue, but I stopped him before he could. “You wouldn’t have brought me here if you didn’t think she could.”
“Fine. If you change your mind. Alex will know how to get a hold of me.” Luka told me, and I nodded my head at him. It was hard watching him leave. I wanted to yell wait. But I didn’t. If he didn’t go, now I wouldn’t have the confidence to let him walk away. It honestly scared me how strongly I felt about someone I barely knew. I was just asking to be hurt again.
Once the door was shut. Alex locked it.
“Just in case he tries running back in here.” She smiled at me. “You sure you don’t want him here? You looked like you didn’t want him to go,” she asks me.
“Are you sure you're not a mind reader? I asked. Alex laughed.
“Yes. I am not a mind reader. I am just good at reading people, and even if I wasn’t good, you don’t hide your feelings well.” She winks at me playfully.
“I saw he was struggling. I am sure I am worse elsewhere. If he saw those marks, what would he do? He would lose control, and I am sure something bad would happen. I don’t want something bad to happen to him because of it.” I tell her honestly.
“True,” Alex agreed. She finished gathering supplies on a cart and wheeled it over to me. She looked me in the eye before telling me, “I am so glad you guys found each other.”
“Thank you? But we are not a couple or anything like that.” I tell her. What were we? Friends didn’t fit. We haven’t gone on a date or anything, so I wouldn’t call us dating. So what were we? Alex giggled.
“It doesn’t matter what you guys are. You both care about the other. It's nice when you find someone who cares about you.” She smiles, but it's not as warm as before. I guess I wasn’t the only one who could read someone else.
Once she had all her supplies, she began examining me. It hurt like hell as she poked and touched areas. I had a couple broken ribs. I wasn’t surprised. Both my ankles was sprained. No wonder why my feet hurt. Thankfully the rest was just bruise and sores. I would heal. I would live. She finished wrapping up my exam.
“Okay, We got your blood pressure and blood sugar back in normal range. Here are some pain meds.” She hands me a bottle with white little pills. I read the label oxycodone. Was she allowed to give this to me? There was only 6 pills but still.
“Is this allowed?” I asked.
“Yes. You dont have an allergy to them?” She asked.
“Yeah I dont, but I heard people can get really addicted to them.” I questioned as I started into the bottle with the few pills.
“Yes, you’d have to take a lot. Id really just recommend taking them before bed so you can get lots of rest. Rest is the best medicine. But if you are uncomfortable with that, I can get some ibuprofen. Stronger then what you’d get in the store.”
“If that is okay, I would prefer that please.” I tell her. She looks at me with a gaze that tells me she is trying to read something off of me. But I dont tell her. It’s not something I like to talk about. I never had a problem with pills. But I have heard stories about my Fathers parents being addicts and why he never did anything other than alcohol. I knew addiction ran on my fathers side of the family. I didn’t want to risk it my self. After a long stare down she smiles and takes the bottle from me. Its not that I didn’t trust her. I did. During my exam she easied a lot of my concerns. I just didnt trust my self.
“I dont have anything right now. But I can get some soon. Once we get you dressed. Ill get you comfortable in the guest room and I’ll head out to my office to get ibuprofen.”
“Thank you.” I tell her. “But are you not a vet?”
“Yes. but I still have a medical licnese that allows me to get these things and treat people.”
“Wait what?” I asked confused.
“I guess that wasn’t explained well. I am sorry. Yes I am a Vet. But I also have a medical degree to work on people when I need to. I just prefer helping animals over humans.” She explains.
“Oh! If I knew that I wouldn’t have been so worried!” I said.
Alex laughs at me. “Don’t worry about it. Lets get a move on anyways and get you to the guest room so Lukas can stop pacing.”
