"Kathie, what are you doing here?"
The voice came from behind me. I slowly turned my head and saw Beckett's familiar face, and my tense emotions immediately relaxed.
I felt like I had just been pulled out of the water, my lungs compressed, and the joy of regaining something lost left me speechless, only able to gasp for air.
After a while, I finally returned to normal.
I carefully looked at Beckett and even reached out to touch his face!
Thank goodness, Beckett was okay.
I couldn't hold it in any longer, and tears started streaming down my face.
Beckett panicked and clumsily reached out to wipe my tears, but I noticed his left hand was twisted at a strange angle.
"Dad, what happened to your hand!"
Beckett instinctively tried to hide his arm behind him, but I grabbed his shoulder, preventing him from hiding.
"Your father hit the man lying on the ground with his car and now needs to go to the hospital with the ambulance."
It was then that I noticed a police officer standing behind Beckett.
"Surveillance shows that your father was likely driving while fatigued and hit a bicycle that was riding normally, causing the accident. So, your father is fully responsible for this accident."
"The specific compensation details will be discussed after the injured person is examined at the hospital."
After the police officer finished speaking, I stood there in a daze for a second before looking at Beckett.
Beckett stood there with his head hung low, like a child waiting to be scolded by a parent.
Seeing Beckett's apologetic face, I couldn't help but feel heartbroken.
I knew he didn't do it on purpose. He had barely slept in the past few days trying to find a way to raise money.
As I helped Beckett walk towards the ambulance, I comforted him, "It's okay, the doctor just told me that the injured person only has a concussion and is in a coma."
The final judgment was that the injured person had a mild concussion and four broken ribs. We needed to compensate for his medical expenses and lost wages, totaling three hundred thousand dollars!
I brought a fruit basket to visit the injured person and pleaded with him.
"Hello, three hundred thousand dollars is too much. My mom is still in the ICU, and my family can't come up with that much money."
At this point, I had already given up my dignity.
But when the injured person's family arrived, they started yelling at me.
"How do you drive? If it weren't for my son's luck, three hundred thousand dollars wouldn't be enough. Stop talking nonsense and give us the money."
Seeing the woman in front of me looking like she wanted to tear me apart, I took out my phone, gritted my teeth, and transferred the three hundred thousand dollars.
Back home, I helped Beckett sit on the couch and went to the kitchen to make him some spaghetti.
Before long, a steaming bowl of spaghetti was placed in front of Beckett.
Beckett shakily picked up the fork, and finally, tears fell into the bowl.
"Kathie, I'm useless!"
Beckett, a strong man, was now crying in despair.
