Chapter 61
Nora froze for a moment, her eyes flickering.
Michael had been looking for her all night?
"It doesn't matter, he's James's brother." Nora instinctively looked away.
"I think he's different from James. He seems to really care about you. Otherwise, why would a big CEO personally look for you in the middle of the night? If he wanted to catch you, he wouldn't need to do it himself." Savannah shook her head, feeling that Michael had no ill intentions toward Nora.
"Savannah, is there any package for me at home?" Nora changed the subject.
Savannah could tell Nora didn't want to talk about it, so she pulled out a small bag from her purse. "Here, your family sent it."
Nora glanced at it and breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you."
"Nori, since you've decided to start over, don't let the past trap you. I used to think I couldn't move on either, but once you do, things get better." Savannah tried to comfort Nora.
Nora nodded, gripping what was in her hand—Samuel's hair with follicles. She needed Walter to do a paternity test with Samuel as soon as possible.
She had to confirm Walter's identity.
"That outfit you're wearing..." Savannah immediately noticed something off about Nora's clothes. This was a luxury custom brand that ordinary people couldn't afford—one piece cost tens of thousands of dollars.
"Mr. Wood?" Savannah guessed it herself, looking at Nora in shock and pulling her further into the restroom. "Nora, think carefully. Walter is like Michael—not the kind of man women like us can handle. Do you know that Walter has had a constant stream of women around him all these years? He..."
"He might be my son's father." Nora said quietly.
Savannah gasped, biting her lip and thinking for a moment. "Walter has a woman named Bronte, she's a celebrity. That woman is not someone to mess with, so be careful."
Savannah was worried Bronte might retaliate against Nora.
"But Bronte isn't the main issue. Have you heard that the Wood family and the Clark family from Emerald City might be arranging a marriage? The Clark family has been promoting this for a while now. It seems like a done deal." Savannah just felt sorry for Nora's fate.
She didn't believe these rich people truly liked Nora.
A woman who had been in prison and had a child—for these big shots, she wouldn't even be a top choice as a plaything.
Nora stared at Savannah blankly. "The Clark family?"
At the mention of the Clark family, Nora almost instinctively started trembling.
Pearl was the one who had led the bullying against her back then, and after her fake heiress identity was exposed, Pearl was the woman who publicly humiliated and tormented her the most viciously.
"Nori?"
Outside the restroom was Yasmin's voice.
Nora collected herself and nervously walked out.
"Mr. Wood, Mr. Wood is here to see you."
Nora's heart tightened as she walked toward the front desk with her head down.
When Walter came to the club, managers and higher-ups practically sprinted over—they had to show him proper respect.
"Mr. Wood, what brings you here?" the manager asked. Coming at this time, did Walter have some arrangement?
Walter ignored the manager and glanced at Nora, handing her the breakfast in his hand. "Remember to eat."
Everyone stared at Nora in shock, including Nora herself.
Walter was clearly doing this on purpose.
Everyone looked at Walter in confusion, not understanding why he would bring breakfast to a receptionist early in the morning.
Over the years, Walter had been linked to quite a few scandals. The only one who had lasted the longest with Walter was that minor celebrity Bronte, but even so, Walter had never visited her at work, let alone brought her food.
With Nora's status—no education, a club receptionist—shouldn't she keep as low a profile as possible? Wouldn't it be best to hide her? Why did Walter seem so open about it?
Savannah stood nearby, looking at Nora with some concern.
Being pushed into the spotlight was clearly not a good thing.
"Nori."
After Walter gave Nora the breakfast, he left. Under everyone's surprised gazes, Savannah pulled Nora aside. "What are you thinking?"
Nora said nothing.
By doing this, Walter had essentially exposed her location, pushing her to the edge of a cliff.
There was no way back for her. Her only way out was to hold tight to Walter, this big tree.
"He's forcing me." How could Nora not see through what Walter wanted?
Pushing her until there was no way back, making her understand that only he could be her support and backing.
Savannah sighed and hugged Nora. "These rich people are really not human, every single one of them..."
"Nori, you and Mr. Wood..." the manager came over with a flattering expression.
Even Yasmin looked at Nora in shock.
Nora didn't know how to explain and kept her head down without speaking.
"Nori and Mr. Wood knew each other before." Savannah made up an explanation. "How long can Mr. Wood's novelty last anyway?"
The manager nodded. "But being able to give Mr. Wood even a moment of novelty is Nori's blessing, and our club's blessing."
The manager was clearly hoping Nora would put in a good word for them with Walter.
Nora said nothing, standing at the front desk with her head down.
Not long after Walter left, Royce arrived, saying the manager had approved leave and he would take her for a medical checkup.
"Ms. Adams, I'm sorry, but this is standard procedure." Royce seemed a bit awkward. The checkup was quite disrespectful, but this was Walter's standard process for keeping mistresses, so he couldn't say much.
"It's fine." Nora shook her head.
"The medical center will have results quickly. I'll take you to the company to see Mr. Wood." Royce felt Walter was being a bit hasty, too eager to tie Nora to his side.
"Okay." Nora agreed.
She also needed to get Walter and Samuel to do a paternity test as soon as possible.
After leaving the medical center, Royce handed Nora a bottle of water.
Nora took it and said thank you.
"Ms. Adams, I shouldn't say this, but I think you need to be mentally prepared—Mr. Wood can never marry you."
Royce had been with Walter for six years. He understood Walter too well.
He separated marriage and feelings too clearly. He wouldn't marry early, but if he did marry, it would definitely be a transaction.
Nora clearly didn't fit the criteria.
Royce spoke tactfully, trying to help Nora think clearly and not invest her feelings, or she would definitely suffer.
Nora nodded. After getting the medical report, she followed Royce to Mountain Construction Group.
"Mr. Wood, Ms. Adams is here."
Walter stood up and glanced at Nora. "Did you eat breakfast?"
Nora nodded.
"Take a look at the contract." Walter had Nora look over the contract.
Nora shook her head. "No need."
She didn't care about the contract's contents.
She pulled Samuel's hair from her pocket and looked at Walter. "I want paternity test results."
Then Nora placed the medical report on the desk. "Besides that night, no man has touched me, so..."
Nora kept her head down, her face flushed red.
But it definitely wasn't from shyness or embarrassment.
"So if that night was you, please let me know the results as soon as possible." She didn't need Walter to take responsibility. Walter only needed to cooperate with the medical examination, nothing else.
Samuel was an accident, but he was innocent.
Walter took Samuel's hair and sat on the sofa. "If I'm not Samuel's biological father, what do you plan to do?"
Nora looked up at Walter. "Keep looking."
Walter's expression darkened. Nora's current compromise was entirely for the child, and she seemed to be negotiating a business deal with him.
