Chapter 60
Walter slowly opened his eyes, his gaze deep and contemplative. "Is Michael going to stick his nose into James's business?"
Walter didn't think Michael was the type to meddle in James's affairs.
Royce was somewhat worried. In Emerald City, the Smith family and the Adams family were already going after Nora with everything they had. "Mr. Wood, what the Smith family and the Adams family are doing to Ms. Adams is pretty extreme. Are you sure you want to get involved in this mess?"
Walter sneered. "The woman I want to protect—what can the Smith family and the Adams family do about it? Besides, Michael isn't the type to meddle in other people's business."
"But Mr. Smith is still looking for her." Royce didn't know how to handle this.
"Let him look." Walter hung up directly.
Tossing his phone aside, Walter got up and walked to the guest room door.
His raised hand froze for a moment. Walter rubbed his temples and went into his own bedroom instead.
Let Nora get a good night's rest.
The next morning, Nora got up early. She had just started her job, and this week she had morning shifts—she needed to get there early for the handover.
Searching through the fridge, Nora discovered that Walter's home really had no signs of life. Apart from a few eggs, she couldn't find any other ingredients.
Clearly, Walter didn't hire a housekeeper and never ate at home.
Running out of the complex, Nora used Walter's card to carefully select ingredients at the supermarket. The prices at these upscale neighborhood supermarkets were ridiculously expensive—a head of lettuce cost sixty-eight dollars.
Head down as she paid, Nora consoled herself—at least it wasn't her own money.
After buying the ingredients, Nora made breakfast and placed it on the dining table.
The doorbell rang.
Walter was woken up and walked out somewhat displeased, wearing a bathrobe, leaning lazily and carelessly against the doorway. "Who is it?"
Seeing that Nora had made breakfast, Walter's eyes showed a flash of surprise.
Then he thought about it—Nora, who used to be so pampered and spoiled, could actually make breakfast now.
It looked like it might taste pretty good too.
Walter, who never ate breakfast at home, suddenly felt quite an appetite.
At the door.
Nora opened it, looked up, and instantly froze.
Standing there in shock, Nora opened her mouth, but her throat seemed blocked.
Why would Michael be in Silverlight City?
Michael's mood was dark, his face grim, looking slightly tired, as if he hadn't slept all night.
Nora panicked and instinctively turned to run.
She was afraid Michael was working with the Smith family, coming to catch her.
"Why are you running!" Michael frowned, grabbing Nora's wrist.
Nora's face went pale with fear, her whole body trembling.
She couldn't go back, couldn't be caught and taken back to Emerald City.
She would die.
"Mr. Smith, quite a surprise this early in the morning." Walter leaned against the dining table with a half-smile. "Tracking her all the way to my home?"
Michael's face was stern. "I'm taking Nora with me."
"Mr. Smith, showing up at my house first thing in the morning to take away my woman—that's not really appropriate, is it?" Walter walked over and pulled Nora into his arms.
Nora was still trembling, inexplicably afraid to look Michael in the eye.
She was scared of seeing disappointment in Michael's eyes.
In the end, she had still chosen this path.
Being kept by someone? Selling her body and soul?
But she had no other choice. Walter was Samuel's father.
Michael's look at Nora was indeed full of disappointment. He hadn't expected her to still choose this path.
"I've already handled Samuel's school situation, and I'll help you deal with the Smith family and the Adams family too. Think it through." Michael wasn't stupid—Walter bringing a woman home, that meant something.
Walter frowned slightly. Michael would be this kind to help Nora?
But in Walter's view, Michael was the type of cold-blooded person without feelings, who wouldn't easily fall for anyone.
Nora said nothing, almost burying her head in her chest.
"Mr. Smith hasn't had breakfast yet, right? Nori made it—want to try some?" Walter smiled, holding Nora tighter as he asked.
Nora's body was stiff, her eyes reddening.
Michael instinctively glanced at the dining table. Even from a distance, he could already smell the aroma.
Strangely, he actually wanted to taste what Nora's cooking was like.
Walter smiled meaningfully, suddenly feeling a sense of crisis.
If it were James, he wouldn't take him seriously.
But Michael was different.
"No thanks." Michael said in a low voice, glancing at Nora as if giving her one last chance.
Nora kept her head down, never saying a word.
"Take care. I'm treating tonight—my assistant will contact you in advance." Walter saw Michael off.
Michael's expression was ugly, his eyes somewhat complicated.
He had just felt an impulse to fight Walter for her.
He wanted to know what terms Walter had offered Nora—he could offer double.
But when the words reached his lips, reason ultimately won out.
Why should he bother over a woman who had willingly degraded herself...
Rubbing his temples, Michael spoke in a low voice. "Look into the relationship between Walter and Nora."
Walter definitely wouldn't just take one look at someone and bring them home. This was Walter's home—it was well known in their circle that Walter never brought women home.
David looked at Michael in shock. "Nora has a connection with Mr. Wood?"
So she ran to Silverlight City to find a backer. "This Nora is really smart. Knowing you don't get involved with women, she ran to Silverlight City. Walter really is the only one besides you who could protect her. Staying in Silverlight City, James and the Adams family really can't touch her."
Michael shot David a dark look. "You can shut up now."
In the living room.
After Michael left, Nora stood silently in place, still refusing to lift her head.
"Didn't realize you were so capable. James is your fiancé, and you're hooking up with his brother Michael too?" Walter lifted Nora's chin with his hand.
He was a bit jealous, so his words came out harsh.
But the moment he lifted Nora's chin, Walter regretted it.
Because Nora was crying.
Her face was covered in tears, her eyes red.
"Why are you crying?" Walter frowned.
Did she think Michael had misunderstood her, or was she upset that Michael was disappointed in her?
"Have you fallen for Michael?" Walter grew increasingly irritated.
Nora shook her head.
How could she be worthy of that?
"Breakfast is getting cold." Nora pointed at the dining table, checked the time, and turned to run.
"Where are you going? Sit down and eat." Walter wanted Nora to eat breakfast before leaving.
"I have to work. I'll be late." Nora said nervously.
"Take your phone." Walter pointed at the phone on the table.
Nora paused, only then realizing that Walter had bought her a phone.
Picking up the phone and looking at it, Nora turned back to Walter. "Thank you."
Walter's fingers slowly tightened around his knife and fork.
After Nora ran out the door, Walter irritably threw his utensils across the room.
What the hell was he doing?
Nightfall Clubhouse.
Work during the day wasn't busy—mainly handling rooms or hotel suites upstairs for guests checking out.
Yasmin came too, smiling at Nora. "Nori, you changed into new clothes?"
Nora paused, looking down at her dress. It was from Walter.
"That dress isn't cheap, is it?"
Nora nodded slightly.
"Nora!" Savannah rushed in energetically, pulling Nora straight to the restroom. "What's your relationship with Michael? He's a CEO! The richest man! He dragged me around Silverlight City looking for you all night, worried sick something happened to you. He seemed pretty concerned about you."
