Chapter 84 GETTING HER HELP
Chapter 84 GETTING HER HELP
YUNA
I needed to help Mia more because I felt like she was hiding something so I decided to take a bold step for her. What I was doing felt wrong but I knew she would come to appreciate it some day.
I ordered for a small recorder for less than 20 bucks online then when she stepped out for air that day, I planted it behind a book in the bookshelf her room then went out to the kitchen to make tea and calm herself down.
For a moment, I felt so bad I contemplated going back to remove but at that same time, she walked in so I killed that thought.
She hadn't told me what happened after the night he texted her. I asked the next morning and she said nothing happened, she'd just gone to sleep. But taking one look on her face, I knew she was lying and hiding something.
It was saddening that she didn't trust me.
And even more saddening just how much that man had dug his claws into her but she didn't realize.
Now, I knew that approach wouldn't work.
I'm sorry, Mia.
Two days later, I was in my bedroom, door locked as I listened to the recording. It was quite long and for the most part I heard nothing but static, her breathing, moving around or something something random.
Just as I was about to give up, get up and go confess what I had done to her, I heard the sound of something by the window after her room had gone silent for a while and then the low rumble of a man saying her name.
Dante.
I sat straight her, listening to know if he did something to her. I had been in this apartment for days and she didn't scream, call me or even tell me that he ha been in her room, in my apartment, in the middle of the night.
I heard her tell him to leave and then they had a converstaion before he left.
“Okay, maybe that was all.” I tried to convince myself as I listened further.
The recording got to the next day and then I heard me sound at her window, followed by him telling her to be silent and then her moans and my heart dropped.
I couldn't listen further as I threw it away from me. “How could you be so stupid, Mia?”
I questioned in anger, pacing and biting my finger nails. That man had made my life like hell because I was even too scared to open my curtain. Now, I took her in as a friend and she still slept with him.
What about all my sacrifices to her?
How coul—
“No.” I shook my head. This wasn’t about me. She needs help so I picked up my phone and called the one person I knew who could actually do more than detective kim
My father picked up on the second ring.
"It's late," he said.
"I know. I need to see you."
A pause. My father had been a judge for nineteen years so he knew that when I sounded like this, I needed him as a judge and not just my father.
"Come for breakfast," he said.
His kitchen smelled like coffee and his cologne. It was no surpise that I didn't smell food because this man would be so busy with work, he would forget to eat. I also made sure to have breakfast and lied to Mia before coming here.
We hadn't seen in a while and our relationship had been like that since Mom left. We were very close but when a person looks from the outside, it would seem distant but our relationship as father and daughter was solid.
"You look terrible," he said.
"Thanks, Dad."
"Sit. Eat something."
I looked at the empty table then at him. “Air?”
He looked sheepish. “I’ll order something now.”
"I'm not hungry." I sat and put my phone on the table between us with the recording already pulled up. "I need you to listen to something."
"Yuna—"
"Please."
He looked at me for a moment then picked up the phone and listened. I had cut it down to the part I wanted and gave him a brief summary of what had been happening with Mia and Dante. I also told him a bit of how Dante had threatened me then Mia went missing and she is lying about everything.
His face remained stoic as he listened, taking sips of his coffee and when he was done, he slowly set the cup down before handing the phone back to me and looking at me with a serious expression.
"How long has this been happening?" he said.
"I don't know the full timeline. Months. Maybe close to a year."
"And she's protecting him."
"She doesn't see it that way."
"What way does she see it?"
I looked at my hands. "I don't think she knows what she sees it as. I think she's been inside it so long she can't see that it is unhealthy."
He was quiet for a moment, his hands flat on the table, looking at the phone.
"This recording," he said. "How did you obtain it?"
"I put a recorder in her room."
"Without her knowledge."
"Yes."
He nodded. "The recording itself captures an adult male entering a residence through a window in the middle of the night and making contact without prior explicit invitation."
"She told him not to come."
"In writing?"
I paused. I didn't know how exactly she had invited him over. "By text, probably."
He picked up his coffee again. "This is enough to get a warrant."
Something in my chest loosened for the first time in weeks.
"And if she fights us on it?" I said. "She protected him from Detective Kim. She'll do it again."
He looked at me over his cup with a stern expression.
"Then we will have to protect her from herself."
