The Web

**Chapter 1: Awakening**

****Maxine****

For the past one hundred and fifty years, I have done the same thing. At the start of every Lent, I crawl out of my cocoon of silk threads, wipe away the fog of diapause from my black eyes, and stretch my spindly legs. I allow the first rays of sunlight to warm my weary body. A year has passed so quickly, but time becomes meaningless when you are older than dirt and have a debt to the Devil. How I got to this point is a long story. I had loved the wrong man and made a deal with Satan to save him. I had been in hell for years and grew bored, so I made another deal.

I finally knocked on Satan’s door, hoping to escape my mundane existence. My delusions of grandeur were nothing but breadcrumbs scattered across the floor of my dismal life. When he offered her a deal—to become one of his reapers in exchange for my freedom—I accepted without hesitation, oblivious to the price I would pay. He made me into a black widow spider shifter. At first, I thrived in shadows, ensnaring souls who unwittingly wandered into my web. With every soul harvested, I could feel the chains of my soul loosening just a bit more. The thrill of the hunt consumed me as I reveled in the lies and deception necessary to fulfill Satan's cruel requirements. However, deep inside, the flicker of hope dimmed with every soul claimed.

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden glow over the park as I slunk through the crowd, my eyes scanning for my next victim. Easter Sunday was approaching, and the air was thick with the scent of blooming flowers and the sound of children’s laughter. Pastel colors draped the scene like a saccharine dream, a stark contrast to the darkness that clung to my soul. I was Maxine, a collector of souls for Satan’s gain, and my existence was a carefully crafted web of deception and seduction. Yet, on this fateful day, something-or, rather, someone, threatened to unravel it all.
