Chapter Forty-Two
Drake shot a smile at me as Owen pressed play and I watched a redhead man stalk towards the door. The bar was still pretty empty, but there was no denying that it was the man from the selfie that Sarah had sent me. I watched him come up to the bar, his lips moving as he asked the bartender about Sarah.
Crossing my arms over my chest, I studied him. He was handsome, and even from the screen I knew he was broader in the chest than I was. Tattoos covered his arms, drifting down to his palms.
“Know him?” Drake asked.
“It’s her weekend fling.”
“Seemed worried that he had to find her.” Drake said, “Even introduced himself like he’d be sticking around for some time. Offered to compensate me since he didn’t fill out the paperwork for crossing territories.”
“Did he say why?”
“Nope.” Owen answered. My phone buzzed and it was Sarah’s landlord letting me know she was calling the police. I knew where I was headed next, if he was on the hunt. Then so was I.
The difference was, she was already mine.
Parking a few blocks away from Sarah’s apartment, I turned the key, silencing the truck’s engine. A patrol car passed and I studied the empty backseat. My lips twisted into a grin that I knew if I looked would be pure predator.
I wouldn’t have expected anything less from my prey.
I was glad that they hadn’t found him. Taking a minute to study the surroundings, I got out of my truck. Taking a deep breath of the still night air. I could taste him now, stronger than before. The scent of him wasn’t unpleasant. Woods after the rain mixed with strong whiskey. He still hadn’t showered, but it didn’t bother me.
I must have been spending too much time with the wolves for that smell to be so. I struggled to find the right word. Nice? Comforting?
Shaking my head, I stored the thought for later. There was a wolf out there hunting my mate, and I wanted to find him first before he found her.
My dragon was oddly quiet. He wanted to string the wolf up. Under that feeling was excitement. We were hunting someone who had touched our mate. I didn’t understand why he’d come looking for her.
Well, I did. It was Sarah, I’d chase her to the ends of the earth.
A part of me wanted to make him pay for touching her.
I knew that wasn’t a rational thought. It was one that would get me into deeper trouble than I was already in. Right now, I could feel that she was sleeping and I was glad that she’d calmed down enough to get some rest.
Following the scent, I made my way to Sarah’s apartment. The lights were off and it didn’t smell like Micheal had been home this weekend. Probably spent the time fucking his boss, even though he’d told Sarah he’d broken things off. I hoped the asshole was already well on his way to being moved out.
When I’d shown up to take care of everything at his work, he’d tried to act all macho at me. He didn’t understand how I felt about her. Didn’t know that even at that time, Sarah was my everything.
Micheal and his boss had tried to act like the window would be a big deal. They’d been shocked when I called up a glass repair shop and paid off the amount for it to be fixed later that day. After that, I’d told her ex that he needed to get out of her apartment. I’d given him the courtesy of having the month to do so. Then I’d headed to Sarah’s landlord’s office and taken care of that so she wouldn’t have to.
I’d packed up her things before Micheal got home for the day and had her all moved in before nightfall.
Climbing up onto her balcony, I could see that the wolf hadn’t tried to break in. His fingerprints were on the glass, he’d looked into this room. Probably imagining her in there.
Closing my eyes, it was strange, almost like I could see him doing it.
Licking my lips, I rested my hand where his hand been. A strange feeling sweeping through me. It was silent, except for the rapid beating of my heart. My dragon was on edge.
All I could think of is how her ex had treated her. Wasted her time, spent her money, played with her. It added fuel to my hatred of the weak human.
That’s what had to be wrong with me, why he was so on edge. At the same time, I couldn’t help but think about Dom. I’d thought that the weekend away would help her clear her thoughts so she could move on. A part of me was glad that he had awakened that side of her. I didn’t know if she’d be ready to accept me so quickly if he hadn’t.
Circling the apartment one last time, I turned away. I had his scent, strong and clear. Tracking him would be easy, it was almost like he wanted to be found. He hadn’t even tried to cover his trail.
Tucking my hands into my pockets, I walked down the sidewalk, leaving the brightly lit complex. Sarah’s old place was pretty well in the city and within walking distance of the bar.
Closing my eyes, I let the beast take over. Not enough to hunt, because I knew that I didn’t want to hurt the other man. Turning, I stalked off into the night. I just needed to find out why he was here. Then scare him off.
Sure, when we’d talked to her this weekend and she’d told me about the things that he’d done to her. I’d come just from imagining watching him dominate her. I hadn’t had a face or a name then, he’d just been a random hookup.
