Chapter 153
“Much,” Alexis murmured. “You do have a cute butt. I could think of all sorts of naughty things I could do with it.”
“Don’t you dare even think of talking dirty tonight. My libido can’t handle it.” She released a breath, placing some much-needed space between her and Alexis.
“Sorry.” Alexis smiled. “Why don’t we try and get some rest before I get too carried away?” She kissed the curve of Lynn’s neck. “Roll over so I can get my arms around you.” Lynn slid down in the bed while Alexis fluffed the pillows up for her. Alexis stacked two on top of one another, giving Lynn a bit of elevation. Once Lynn rolled over, Alexis wrapped both arms around her from behind. “Now that’s better.”
“Definitely better,” Lynn murmured. She pressed back until hers and Alexis’s bodies entangled as Alexis’s leg slipped between Lynn’s thighs. “Goodnight, sexy Lexi.”
Alexis kissed Lynn’s shoulder, “Goodnight my love.” 29
“Everything is looking good,” Charlene, the head midwife, said with a smile. Charlene, a middle-aged midwife of fifteen years, had delivered over two hundred babies in her years of midwifery. Several years back she’d even performed an unexpected triplet delivery with a New Jersey couple. She held a Master’s degree in nursing, a certification in midwifery, and was a certified nurse practitioner. Charlene ventured into the world of midwifery when she herself was pregnant and desired a natural home birth. So far, both Lynn and Alexis were pleased with her expertise. “How are you feeling?” She tilted her head, her lengthy brown ponytail falling over her shoulder.
Lynn shifted on the bed when Charlene palpated her stomach. “My back is killing me, I can’t sleep, and I feel like a waddling beach ball, I’m perfect.” She laughed.
“Don’t pay her any mind,” Alexis said when she slipped onto the bed. She draped one arm around Lynn’s shoulders. “The further along she gets, the more she complains.”
“Perfectly normal,” Charlene said with a laugh. “I nearly drove my poor husband crazy during my pregnancies. Are you consuming adequate fiber and plenty of fluids?”
“I’m constantly drinking something. Usually I alternate between water and some sort of juice. Every morning I’ve been eating a cereal containing plenty of fiber. Alexis bought me these fiber bars too. They taste horrible.”
“But she’s been eating them anyways like a good girl.” Alexis patted Lynn on the head, prompting an eye roll from her wife.
“I’d prefer doughnuts.”
“Fiber bars are much healthier for the babies than doughnuts,” Charlene stated. “Have you been experiencing anymore Braxton Hicks?” Charlene removed her hands from Lynn’s stomach, glancing up at her when she spoke.
“Thankfully they’ve stopped.” Lynn moved one hand to her stomach. “I really want to carry these little ones to term.”
“That’s why you should be eating extra protein and consuming plenty of fluids.” Charlene pulled out a tape measure and stretched it across the center of Lynn’s stomach, measuring her fundal height. “I’m happy to report the babies are presenting themselves in the correct position which does lessen the risks for a vaginal birth. You’re a little over the target weight, but it’s better to gain too much than too little.”
“Doctor Rollins sure doesn’t think that way.” Lynn sighed with relief. “I’ve been so worried that the first baby would be breech. I’m so happy to hear that they’re in correct position!”
“Are you still seeing Doctor Rollins, too?”
“He’s still on my speed dial if anything goes wrong during the birth, but no I haven’t returned to the office. Doctor Rollins and I haven’t really seen eye to eye after I refused to have an amniocentesis. He doesn’t support the home birth either. I have one last appointment with a sonographer to see the babies positioning on an ultrasound. I’m a bit nervous about a home birth with twins, but I don’t want a C-section. I know if I go to a hospital that’s what will happen. I don’t like the idea of having my babies snatched away from me either, that’s why Alexis and I decided to go this route.”
Charlene moved her hand atop Lynn’s and smiled. “Don’t worry, sweetie. We’ll have an EMT team ready to roll just as a precautionary measure. I’ve worked with other women who’ve seen Doctor Rollins before. He’s a stickler for all the tests, and he’s never supported home birthing even with a singleton. When it comes down to the birth, if you need him he will be there. Do you still want to go with the birthing tank?”
“Yes.” Lynn nodded when Alexis squeezed her shoulder. “We’re planning to set the birthing tank up in the back room. I’d really like the girls there, too. Do you think that’s a good idea?”
Charlene took a seat on the edge of the bed. “Most women have their previous children present for the birth. Some call over their friends and family. It all depends on who you want to share the moment with.”
“I know Alexis will be there. I’d like the girls to be, but only if they want to. My sister is going to be my Doula and her wife is coming over so she can watch the children.”
“Have you been using your birthing ball?” Charlene gestured towards the enormous blue ribbed ball perched in the corner of the bedroom.
