Chapter 532 Going Abroad
Chapter 532 Going Abroad
Kenna's lips twisted into a faint, bitter smile.
So, her divorce from Ambrose was really final.
"What about the company if you go abroad?" Brooks asked.
"Dad's doing a lot better, and the company's back on track. He'll take over," Ambrose replied. "But hey, if you change your mind, you could step in for Dad. He's about ready to retire anyway."
"I've got my own job," Brooks said flatly. "I'm just on medical leave right now. Once I'm better, I'll go back to my research. It's not the same as what you guys do."
"Yeah, you're something," Ambrose said sarcastically. "We're just selfish businessmen."
"No need to be so harsh. We just have different goals," Brooks said, sensing the hostility in Ambrose's tone. He changed the subject, "When are you leaving?"
"Tomorrow."
"What?" Brooks was shocked. He thought it would be at least a few months.
Ambrose repeated. "Tomorrow morning's flight."
"Why so soon?"
"It's not that sudden. I've been preparing for over two weeks," Ambrose said, his demeanor calm and unruffled.
He showed little emotion about leaving the country, leaving his friends and family behind.
"When will you be back?" Brooks asked.
"I don't know. Depends on how things go over there. If everything goes smoothly, I'll be back sooner. If not, who knows?" Ambrose shrugged.
Brooks wanted to say more, but realized there wasn't much left to say. He held Kenna's hand, and she pressed her lips together, seemingly just coming to terms with the situation. A tear slipped from the corner of her eye, but she quickly wiped it away.
"Let's go," Brooks signaled to Kenna.
Kenna nodded. She hadn't said a word to Ambrose from start to finish, not even a goodbye. Ambrose didn't look at her either until she and Brooks left. Only then did he watch her retreating figure, growing more distant.
In truth, he didn't have to go abroad himself. The company had plenty of talent; they could have sent a CEO. But he chose to go, wanting to distance himself from them. Maybe if he didn't see them, it wouldn't hurt so much.
He really didn't know how many times he could endure this feeling.
Ambrose went abroad.
Even after he arrived, he only informed George and Hazel that he might be gone for a while. Everyone was surprised but seemed to understand. They just told him to take care of himself and come back when he could.
Allegra, always the meddler, sent him a WhatsApp message: [What are you thinking? Just leaving like that? Are you really giving up? Ambrose, I've never seen you so spineless! If I were you, I'd fight Brooks for Kenna!]
Ambrose replied: [I can't win. It would just be humiliating.]
Allegra: [How do you know you can't win? Are you lacking confidence in yourself or in Kenna?]
Ambrose: [Both.]
Allegra: [How can you say that? You planned that wedding so carefully. Are you really giving up on it?]
Ambrose: [Yeah.]
Allegra: "[I should tell you, I think Kenna likes you, not Brooks.]
Ambrose: [Honestly, I've never been able to compete with Brooks. Now that he's disabled, Kenna can't let go of him.]
Allegra: [Are you backing out because you don't want to make things hard for Kenna?]
Ambrose: [It doesn't matter. Thanks for your and Hazel's help. Just wish me luck in finding someone new.]
Allegra: [Whatever! You're being stupid!]
Ambrose looked at his phone, smiling helplessly. He really was stupid. Otherwise, why would he be foolish enough to love Kenna? He knew it wouldn't end well.
After six months, Ambrose returned home. The company abroad was doing well, everything was on track. But he wasn't back for good, just to attend Allegra's son's birthday party.
Time flew by. When he left, Allegra was still pregnant. Now her child was already a hundred days old.
Ambrose didn't notify anyone of his return. He went to his house first. It was dusty from being unoccupied. He hired cleaners to tidy up and then settled in alone.
He lay on the familiar bed. The night before he left, he had made love to the person he loved most on this bed. Now it felt like a sealed-off memory. If he hadn't come back, he might have succeeded in forgetting. He didn't know if he had forgotten, but in the past six months, he and Kenna hadn't had any contact.
Sometimes his parents would video call him from the Valois Mansion, but Kenna never appeared. Once, he caught a glimpse of her passing by in the background.
Ambrose turned over. Tomorrow he'd attend Allegra's party, probably drink with George and the others. He hadn't drunk in a while and wondered about his tolerance. Resting well would definitely help.
The next morning, Ambrose woke up early. He didn't know when it started, but his routine had become similar to his parents'. Early to bed, early to rise, no late nights.
He dressed neatly, took the prepared gift, and left. He didn't arrive too early or too late, just on time. When he was younger, he liked to stand out. Now he found that childish. The past six months had matured him a lot. He was surprised at his own growth, because he thought his personality would never change.
At the banquet hall, he saw Lucius and Allegra greeting guests at the door. They were visibly happy. Who wouldn't be, with a son and daughter? He walked towards them.
Both were shocked to see Ambrose. After a moment, Allegra exclaimed dramatically, "Ambrose, you really came back!"
She had only casually mentioned it on WhatsApp, not daring to expect him to show up.
