Chapter 528 Handling Divorce

Chapter 528 Handling Divorce

Kenna jogged up to Ambrose. "Sorry, I'm late."

"No biggie, I got here early." Ambrose slipped his lighter into his pocket. "Let's head in."

"Sure."

They walked into the courthouse.

While waiting outside, Ambrose handed Kenna the divorce agreement. "Take a look. If there's anything you want to change, let me know. I brought a flash drive so we can update it."

He had actually shown her the agreement the night before.

They had no kids, so there was no custody battle.

There were no financial entanglements either.

Still, Ambrose gave her $20 million.

Kenna initially refused.

Ambrose said it was pocket change to him, just a breakup fee.

Kenna didn't argue much; she knew it was indeed pocket change for him.

And the money ensured a clean break, which was worth it to Ambrose.

After signing, Kenna and Ambrose went to finalize the divorce.

It would take some time to get the divorce decree.

Kenna stared blankly at Ambrose, who seemed just as lost.

They submitted the application and left the courthouse.

"When the decree is ready, we'll come back," Ambrose said.

"Okay."

"I'll head out now."

Ambrose asked casually, "Need a ride?"

"No, thanks." Kenna shook her head. "Brooks is waiting in the car."

"Alright." Ambrose didn't say more.

He turned and walked away briskly.

Kenna was almost used to it. She watched his retreating figure before looking away.

After composing herself, she returned to Brooks' car.

"Is the divorce finalized?" Brooks asked.

"It'll take some time to get the decree," Kenna replied.

Brooks seemed to remember this detail just then, feeling a bit annoyed.

But rules were rules, so he said, "We'll come back in a month."

"Okay."

"Let's go home." Brooks reached out and took Kenna's hand.

Kenna hesitated but didn't pull away.

In the following days, Ambrose was mostly absent from Kenna's life.

Even when Leopold and Aurelia invited him to the Valois Mansion for meals, Ambrose declined, citing work.

The Valois knew he just didn't want to come.

Brooks was recovering well.

A family doctor visited daily to check on him.

At this rate, Brooks could get a prosthetic in two months.

The Valois were pleased with his progress.

Kenna stayed by Brooks' side, helping him recover and passing the time at the mansion.

One day, Kenna got a call from Allegra, who invited her over for dinner.

Allegra had found out she was pregnant after being bitten by a dog.

She was due soon.

She wanted to enjoy herself before the baby came, and she had to rest and follow dietary restrictions.

Kenna felt she needed a break, too.

She wasn't sure if she was feeling repressed, but life felt bleak.

So she readily agreed to Allegra's invitation.

"Will Ambrose be there?" Brooks asked when Kenna mentioned the dinner.

Brooks knew Ambrose was close with Allegra and George Lucius.

He didn't want Kenna and Ambrose meeting privately.

"I don't know. I didn't ask," Kenna replied. "But even if he is, I'm still going. I can't stop seeing my best friends because of Ambrose."

Hearing her words, Brooks felt a bit awkward.

He smiled. "I was just asking. Don't drink too much, you'll feel awful."

"Okay."

That evening, Kenna went to Allegra's house.

When she arrived, only Allegra's family was there.

Allegra's belly was huge.

She wasn't due yet, probably had two months to go.

Kenna knew Allegra was bored and needed company to relax.

"Just me?" Kenna brought Allegra a bouquet.

She thought flowers might cheer up a pregnant woman.

"No," Allegra said. "I invited Hazel, too."

"Great." Kenna nodded.

"And GeorgeNico, and Ambrose," Allegra added.

Kenna remained indifferent.

Allegra knew about the divorce.

Kenna wouldn't hide something so big from her and Hazel.

But she hadn't explained why it had come to this.

Hazel and Allegra suspected Brooks was the main reason.

But as adults, they knew better than to meddle in others' relationships, especially without knowing the full story. So they stayed silent about Kenna's marriage.

Kenna sat on the couch, chatting with Allegra.

People arrived gradually.

Hazel's belly had grown noticeably in the past month.

Kenna felt a pang of sadness.

She had hoped to be pregnant alongside her best friends.

But given the current situation, that seemed unlikely.

Once everyone was there, they gathered around the dining table.

Originally, Ambrose and Kenna were seated next to each other.

After using the restroom, Ambrose casually patted Nico's shoulder. "Let's switch seats."

Kenna, engrossed in conversation with Hazel and Allegra, didn't react much.

As Nico switched seats, he muttered, "Can't divorced people be friends? Look at me and Allegra, we're fine."

The atmosphere grew slightly awkward.

Allegra quickly said, "They're different from us."

"How so?"

"I don't like you, so we can be friends," Allegra said bluntly.

Her words stung.

Nico stared at her. Was she trying to hurt him more?

"True love can't become friendship, right, Kenna?" Allegra asked pointedly.

Kenna pressed her lips together, about to respond.

Ambrose spoke up. "Not necessarily. Sometimes you just realize the person isn't worth it."

Kenna swallowed her words.

Allegra glared at Ambrose.

With that kind of emotional intelligence, he was better off alone!

"Let's enjoy this gathering. Next time, it might be for my kid's birthday party," Lucius said, trying to ease the tension. "Nico, open some drinks. Let's not leave sober tonight."

"Sure." Nico, always perceptive, complied.

His world was already in ruins; he couldn't be hurt anymore.

He opened beers and handed one to each person.

"Ladies, what would you like? Water, juice, or milk?" Nico asked.

"Water, please," Hazel said politely. "We can help ourselves, no need to fuss."

"Get me a beer, Nico," Kenna said.
