Chapter 527 Divorce
Chapter 527 Divorce
Kenna glanced at Brooks, feeling a pang of finality. She knew, deep down, that no matter how much time passed, she would never love him again. But right now, she needed him to let go.
"Alright," She said, her voice steady.
Brooks' grin widened. Despite everything, he still believed he could win her back, even with his missing leg. He never saw Ambrose as competition. In his mind, Kenna choosing Ambrose over him was unthinkable.
"I have one more request," Brooks said, his tone casual.
"Go on," Kenna replied, bracing herself.
"I want you to divorce Ambrose first."
Kenna's eyes met his, her expression unreadable.
"If we're gonna be together, I want it to be out in the open. No rumors, no gossip," Brooks explained.
Kenna pressed her lips together. She couldn't betray Ambrose like that. It was the least she could do to respect their marriage.
"Okay," She nodded.
Brooks' smile grew even more pronounced. Once Kenna divorced Ambrose, he was sure his chances would skyrocket.
"But I have a request too," Kenna said suddenly.
"Sure," Brooks agreed without a second thought. In his mind, Kenna was already his.
A week later, Brooks was discharged from the hospital. Leopold had chartered a plane to bring him back to Phoenix City, and the whole family was finally heading home.
Ambrose drove to the airport to pick them up. Brooks, still in a wheelchair, was carried off the plane by the staff. His injuries were healing, but it would be about six months before he could consider getting a prosthetic leg. During this time, the research institute had granted him paid leave to recover fully.
Brooks settled into Ambrose's car. Since the car was overloaded, Leopold and Aurelia took another vehicle. Kenna sat right next to Brooks, while Ambrose drove, accustomed to his role.
They hadn't spoken or texted each other during the week apart. Now, seeing each other felt like encountering strangers.
"Ambrose," Brooks broke the silence.
"Yeah?"
"Kenna has something to tell you when we get back to the villa. Don't leave right away," Brooks said.
"Okay," Ambrose nodded, glancing at Kenna through the rearview mirror. She was staring out the window, unusually quiet.
At that moment, Ambrose saw Brooks reach out and hold Kenna's hand. Their fingers intertwined, and Kenna didn't pull away. Ambrose shifted his gaze, his expression unchanged, but his tightly gripped steering wheel revealed his inner turmoil.
The car smoothly arrived at the Valois family villa. Kenna helped Brooks out of the car, his body almost entirely leaning on her. Their movements were intimate and practiced, a rhythm they must have developed over time.
Kenna helped Brooks into his wheelchair and pushed him into the Valois family hall. Leopold, Aurelia, and Ambrose followed them inside.
After being away for over half a month, Leopold and Aurelia, being older, were more attached to home. They couldn't sleep well anywhere else; only their own beds provided comfort. So, the first thing they did upon returning was head to their rooms to sleep.
Brooks was also exhausted, and Kenna pushed him to their room. No one came out for a long time.
Ambrose was left alone in the hall, waiting. He could have left, but he had promised Brooks that Kenna had something to say to him. So, he stayed, not knowing how long he would have to wait. Maybe Kenna and Brooks would sleep until evening.
Just as Ambrose prepared to wait all day, he saw Kenna coming down from the second floor alone. His heart raced, and he sat up straighter, his body tense.
Kenna calmly sat next to Ambrose. There was still some silence and awkwardness between them. After all, they were neither like a married couple nor like family. Ambrose suddenly felt his life was absurd.
"What do you want to say to me?" Ambrose asked directly. He didn't want to give himself false hope. He didn't even want to stay under the same roof with Kenna for too long, fearing he might regret it. In fact, he had been regretting it all along, but he had no choice.
"Let's get a divorce," Kenna said, looking at Ambrose, her words clear and deliberate.
Ambrose looked at Kenna's cold expression, the pain in his heart catching him off guard. It felt like a hammer striking his heart, causing him to nearly suffocate. He pressed his lips together, his fingers tightening. He had anticipated this outcome, but hearing Kenna say it so casually was harder to bear than he had imagined. He felt a sudden dizziness, then quickly regained clarity. He bit his lip until it turned pale, trying to stay calm and not embarrass himself in front of her.
After a moment of silence, Ambrose suddenly smiled, naturally. Kenna smiled too, but her eyes were red. She thought there might be some lingering feelings. But there weren't.
Ambrose nodded and said, "I've already prepared the divorce papers. If you're in a hurry, I can get them now, and we can go to the courthouse to finalize the divorce."
So, he had been prepared all along. Of course, since he had already given her to Brooks, how could he still have any reluctance?
She said, "Whenever it's convenient for you."
"I have a meeting later this afternoon," Ambrose said. "Tomorrow morning, I'll come by."
They confirmed the time for the divorce. Ambrose and Kenna seemed to have nothing more to say. They sat quietly together.
After a while, Ambrose suddenly stood up from the couch. Kenna looked at him.
"I'm leaving," Ambrose said, and without waiting for a response, he left. Just like when he had to return to Phoenix City early, he didn't linger.
Kenna's vision blurred as she watched Ambrose walk away.
The next day, Kenna and Ambrose had agreed on a time to go to the courthouse. Ambrose arrived first and waited for Kenna at the entrance. He saw Kenna get out of the car from a distance. There seemed to be someone else in the car. Kenna said something to them. Ambrose didn't need to see clearly to know it was Brooks. He shifted his gaze and played with his lighter. Since he couldn't smoke in public, he used the lighter to control his craving.
