Chapter 37 The Breaking Point

Chapter 37 The Breaking Point
Elena woke up to an empty bed. She'd reached for Pierce's side automatically and found nothing but the pillow he hadn't slept on.

Her phone showed no new messages or calls. Even though she texted him last night, she'd gotten silence in return.

Elena sat up, wrapping her arms around herself, staring at the empty space beside her.

This was becoming a pattern. Pierce leaving without explanation, staying gone for hours or days, coming back exhausted and closed-off. And her, waiting, worrying, slowly going insane.

She couldn't keep doing this.

Meanwhile work was becoming difficult. She couldn't focus. She was mixing up patient charts, forgot to order labs tests, and nearly gave the wrong medication before a nurse caught her mistake.

"Dr. Davis?" The nurse's voice was concerned. "Are you feeling alright?"

"I'm fine." Elena forced a smile. "Just tired."

But she wasn't fine. Her hands were shaking. Her mind kept drifting to Pierce, where he was, what he was doing, whether he was safe.

Derek sat in the waiting area as usual, pretending to read a magazine, watching everyone who came through the doors. His presence should have been comforting.

Instead, it just reminded her that her life had become something that required armed guards.

"Elena."

She looked up to find Marco standing in front of her, arms crossed, expression serious.

"What?"

"Let's go to the conference room." His voice was firm. "Now."

Elena's stomach dropped. "Marco, I'm in the middle of..."

"Now."

She followed him to the empty conference room, dread building with every step. Marco closed the door behind them and turned to face her.

"What's going on with you?"

"Nothing." She said quickly. "I'm just tired."

"You're lying." Marco's voice was sharp. "You've been off for weeks. Disappearing, coming back different, and now you're making mistakes."

"I mixed up one chart..."

"You almost gave a patient the wrong meds, Elena." He corrected, cutting her off. "That's not a small mistake. That could have killed someone."

Shame burned through her. "I know. It won't happen again."

"That's not good enough." Marco's expression softened slightly. "Talk to me. What's going on? Is it family stuff? The thing with your uncle?"

"It's complicated." She said hesitantly.

"Then uncomplicate it for me."

Elena wanted to tell him. Wanted to unload everything, Pierce, Rodrigo, the danger, the secrets, the feeling of slowly drowning in a life she didn't recognize.

But she couldn't.

"I'm handling it," she said quietly. "I promise."

Marco studied her face for a long moment. "The guy in the waiting area. He's been here every day for weeks. Always watching you."

Elena's chest tightened. "He's a friend."

"A friend who looks like he's waiting for someone to attack you." Marco stepped closer. "Elena, if you're in some kind of trouble..."

"I'm not."

"If someone's threatening you..."

"Marco, stop." Elena's voice cracked. "Please just stop."

He looked at her with so much concern it made her want to cry. "I'm worried about you."

"I know." She said quietly. "But I'm okay. I promise."

Marco sighed. "Take the rest of the day. Go home. Get some sleep. And Elena? Figure out whatever this is before it destroys you."

The apartment was empty when Elena got home.

She'd known it would be. Somehow she'd known Pierce wouldn't be there.

Elena dropped her bag by the door and stood in the quiet, feeling the weight of her being alone press down on her.

She checked her phone again. Still nothing.

Where the hell was he?

Elena tried to distract herself, fed the cats, made coffee she didn't drink, turned on the TV she didn't watch. But every few minutes, her eyes drifted to the door.

Hours passed and the he sun set, slowly darkness filled the apartment.

And still, Pierce didn't come home.

Elena sat on the couch, phone in her hands, staring at the last message she'd sent him. The one he never answered.

She should leave. Should pack a bag and go somewhere, anywhere, that didn't feel like a cage made of secrets and silence.

But she stayed.

Because despite everything, some pathetic part of her still hoped he'd walk through that door and finally tell her the truth.

At almost midnight, she heard the key in the lock.

Pierce walked in, and Elena's heart tightened at the sight of him. He looked exhausted, shadows under his eyes, shoulders slumped, moving like every step took effort.

He stopped when he saw her sitting there in the dark.

"You're awake," he said quietly.

"Where were you?" She asked voice sharp.

"I was working."

"For twenty-four hours?"

Pierce set his keys on the counter. "Elena, I'm tired..."

"So am I." Elena stood, her voice shaking. "I'm so tired, Pierce. Of the secrets. Of the silence. Of you disappearing without a word and coming back like nothing's wrong."

"I told you I was handling something..."

"Handling what? What are you handling that you can't tell me about?" She moved closer. "You said I was the only one you were sure of. You said we were in this together. But you won't let me in. You won't tell me anything."

Pierce's jaw tightened. "It's complicated."

"Then explain it to me!" Her voice rose.

"I can't." He said quickly.

"Why not?"

"Because..." Pierce stopped, running a hand through his hair. "Because you're safer not knowing."

"That's not your decision to make." Elena's voice cracked. "I'm not some little thing you need to protect from information. I'm supposed to be your partner."

"You are..."

"Then treat me like one." Tears burned her eyes but she refused to let them fall. "Tell me what's going on. Tell me where you were. Tell me what you're investigating that's so important you won't come home."

Pierce looked at her, conflict written across his face. For a moment, Elena thought he might actually tell her.

Then his expression closed off. "I can't."

"Can't or won't?"

"Does it matter?"

"Yes!" Elena's control finally broke. "It matters because I'm falling apart here, Pierce. I almost hurt a patient today because I couldn't focus. I'm lying to people who care about me. I'm living in this apartment like a prisoner, waiting for you to decide if I'm worth trusting."

"Elena...."

"I need more than this." Her voice dropped to something raw and honest. "I need you to trust me. To be honest with me. To stop shutting me out every time things get hard."

Pierce's hands curled into fists at his sides. "I'm trying to protect you."

"From what? The truth?" Elena took a shaky breath. "Whatever you're hiding from me, whatever you think will happen if you tell me, it can't be worse than this. Than watching you pull away while I have no idea why."

Silence filled the apartment, heavy and suffocating.

Pierce looked at her with something that might have been agony. "You don't know what you're asking."

"Then tell me."

"I can't."

"Why not?"

"Because if I do, you'll leave." His voice cracked on the last word. "And I can't lose you."

Elena's chest tightened. "You're losing me anyway. Right now. By keeping secrets and pushing me away."

"Elena..."

"So here's where we are." Elena forced the words out. "Either you tell me the truth...whatever it is you're hiding...or I'm done."

Pierce went very still. "What?"

"I mean it, Pierce. I can't do this anymore. I can't live like this." Tears finally spilled over. "So you have to choose. Tell me the truth, or I walk away. Right now."

Pierce stared at her, his face pale, jaw working like he was trying to form words that wouldn't come.

"Elena, please..."

"Tell me the truth or I leave." Her voice was steady despite the tears. "Those are your options."

Pierce looked at her like she was breaking him apart. Like every second of silence was costing him something important.

And Elena stood there, heart in her throat, waiting for him to make the choice that would either save them or destroy them completely.
