Eternally Bound, Chapter 64: Seduction
Eva
I went to the bedroom and began my plan. My reflection stared back from the polished surface of the dressing table, a new fullness settling in my cheeks, a subtle curve beneath the silk of my chemise. Many lives stirred within me, a constellation of possibilities, and with them, a surge of power. Power I intended to wield.
A quiet hum of magic thrummed beneath the floorboards, a distant echo from the wards that encased this house. The air here carried the scent of old leather and something else, something sharp and ancient – Eric's scent. He preferred the quiet corners, the meticulous order of a library, the solitude that allowed his mind to spin intricate webs of thought. He would be my first.
My fingers traced the delicate lace along the hem of my chemise. This wasn't a game, not truly, but a test. A necessary unraveling. They saw me as theirs, precious and protected. I needed them to see me as a force, an untamed current. One of them would break. One of them would surrender to the wildness I carried, not just in my womb, but in my very soul. They would acknowledge the goddess, not just the woman.
I slipped into a robe, the silk cool against my skin, and padded barefoot down the grand staircase. The house, usually a symphony of shifting presences, held a rare stillness. The scent of brewing coffee guided me towards the kitchen, but I veered off, drawn instead to the faint glow emanating from the library.
Eric sat at the massive mahogany desk, bathed in the soft glow of a reading lamp. He wore a crisp white shirt, sleeves rolled to expose forearms corded with muscle, his dark hair neatly combed. A leather-bound tome lay open before him, his brow furrowed in concentration. The silence around him was absolute, a sanctuary he'd carved out for himself.
He lifted his head, his blue eyes, usually sharp with intellect, softened as they found me. A ghost of a smile touched his lips.
"I thought you went to rest," he observed, his voice a low, even cadence. He didn't question my presence, simply absorbed it, as he did everything. Logical. Controlled.
I leaned against the doorframe, letting the silk fall open a fraction, exposing the soft curve of my thigh. "Couldn't sleep."
His gaze flickered, not overtly lingering, but acknowledging the subtle invitation. "Is everything alright? The babies?"
"The babies are restless," I replied, my voice a whisper. I pushed away from the frame, letting my steps whisper across the Persian rug. The air around him felt cool, precise, like the edge of a well-honed blade. I moved closer, stopping beside the desk, my hip brushing against the solid wood.
He closed the book, placing a slim silver bookmark between its pages. His hands, long and elegant, rested on the cover. "Is there something I can do?"
I met his gaze, my eyes holding his. "Perhaps." I reached out, my fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw, the faint stubble. His skin felt warm, a stark contrast to the vampire chill I often expected. "You always seem so…contained."
His lips twitched. "Order, Eva. It's what keeps the chaos at bay."
"But sometimes, chaos has its own appeal," I murmured, my thumb stroking the corner of his mouth. I could feel the subtle shift in his breath, the almost imperceptible quickening of his pulse. He was a creature of intricate control, every emotion carefully cataloged, every reaction measured. This was the wall I needed to breach.
He leaned back in his chair, his eyes unwavering. "Are you suggesting a descent into pandemonium, goddess?" The term, uttered with a hint of challenge, sent a shiver down my spine. He rarely used it.
"Perhaps," I countered, my voice low, a playful taunt. My hand moved, sliding from his jaw to the nape of his neck, my fingers tangling in the short, soft hair at his collar. I leaned in, my scent, thick with burgeoning magic and human warmth, engulfing him. "Just for a moment."
He didn't move, didn't flinch, but I felt the tremor, a deep tremor, resonate through him. His eyes, the color of a winter sky, darkened, pulling me in.
"You're playing a dangerous game, Eva," he said, his voice a low rumble.
"Is it dangerous if I'm the one setting the rules?" I whispered, my lips brushing his ear, sending a jolt through me. My hand slid down his chest, resting over his heart. Beneath my palm, I felt the steady, powerful rhythm. A god's heart, but still a heart.
He inhaled sharply, a silent intake of air. "You're testing me."
"Aren't we always testing each other?" I pulled back slightly, just enough to see his face, the rigid line of his jaw, the slight tension around his eyes. "You like to think, Eric. To plan. To foresee every outcome."
"It avoids unnecessary…complications."
