Tucker’s Conflict
Tucker stood by the window of his penthouse, his gaze fixed on the city skyline below. The evening was thick with the haze of a long day, the lights from the streets below twinkling like distant stars. It was a view he had grown used to over the years familiar, comforting in its own way. Yet tonight, the scene outside felt distant. The lights, the sounds, the life that thrived in the city below it all felt so far removed from him now. His thoughts were consumed with one thing. One person.
Scarlet.
Her face had been on his mind for days. Not just the way she looked, but the way she made him feel. There was no mistaking it the same pull he had once felt when they were together was still there. It had never really gone away. But the more he tried to convince himself that the past was behind him, the more he found himself spiraling back into old patterns.
He had tried to stay distant, to focus on what mattered on his family’s business, on the power and influence that had defined his life for years. But every time he saw her, every time she walked into a room, it felt like nothing else mattered. His mind, his heart everything inside him pulled toward her.
But there was something different now. The way she had grown closer to Bernard had shaken him in a way he wasn’t ready to admit. He wasn’t sure what it was. Was it jealousy? No, it had to be more than that. It was fear. Fear of losing her to someone else, to a man who had become her confidant, her ally.
Tucker clenched his jaw as he stared at his reflection in the glass. He had spent years building walls around himself, protecting his heart from any more hurt. But now? Now it felt like those walls were crumbling, piece by piece, every time he thought about Scarlet and Bernard.
He exhaled sharply, pushing away from the window and pacing the room. He couldn’t let it happen. He couldn’t let her slip away. Not again.
His mind flashed back to the kiss the one that had almost consumed them both. The fire between them had been impossible to ignore, but that kiss hadn’t been one of love. It had been something else anger, confusion, unresolved feelings. And when she had pulled away, he had felt like a part of himself had been ripped out. She hadn’t been ready. Neither of them had been. But it didn’t matter now. The kiss was a spark, igniting something deep within him that he didn’t know how to control.
His phone buzzed on the coffee table, interrupting his thoughts. He glanced at the screen and saw her name flash before him. A sharp pang of emotion hit him in the chest, and for a moment, he hesitated. But then, his fingers moved without thought, tapping the screen to answer the call.
“Tucker?” Scarlet’s voice was soft but laced with urgency. “We need to talk.”
He swallowed hard, trying to steady the tremor in his chest. “I know. I was just thinking about you.”
There was a pause on the other end, her voice barely above a whisper. “Tucker, I... I’m not sure I can do this alone anymore. The more I work with Bernard, the more I realize I’m just... I’m just using him to get closer to Wyatt. And I don’t know if that’s right.”
Tucker’s chest tightened. He had always known that Scarlet was strong, independent, but hearing her vulnerability, hearing her doubt, made something in him shift. It made the jealousy, the fear, the anger surge within him. He could feel himself slipping into that dangerous territory the one where he wanted to protect her, to pull her closer and make sure she never left him again.
“You’re not alone, Scarlet,” he said, his voice rough. “You don’t have to do this by yourself.”
She was quiet for a moment, and he could hear her breath hitch on the other end. “But you’re not here, Tucker. I need someone I can trust. And I don’t know if I can trust Bernard. Not completely. I don’t know if I can trust anyone. Especially now that everything feels like it’s falling apart.”
Tucker’s grip tightened on the phone as he closed his eyes. “I’ll be here. Always. You can trust me.”
Her voice softened, the tension in her words unmistakable. “I don’t know, Tucker. I don’t know if I can trust anyone anymore. It’s all too much.”
The rawness in her voice hit him like a gut punch, and for a brief moment, he forgot everything else. The business. The power. The walls he had built. It was all just noise compared to what was right in front of him. What mattered.
“Scarlet,” he said, his voice barely a whisper, “I know we’ve been through a lot, but I’m not giving up on you. Not again. Whatever you need, whatever you want, I’ll help you. But you have to trust me. You have to trust that I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
A long pause stretched between them, the weight of his words settling in the air. The silence was thick with unspoken emotion, each second dragging on longer than the last. He could hear her breathing, slow and measured, as though she were carefully weighing her next words.
“I don’t know if I can do this without you,” she finally said, the admission leaving her voice heavy with uncertainty. “I don’t know if I can keep going.”
Tucker’s heart thudded in his chest. He wanted to say something, to reassure her that everything would be okay, but the truth was, he didn’t know if it would be. He didn’t know if they could bring Wyatt down, or if the fallout would destroy everything they had.
But what he did know was this: he wasn’t going to lose her again. Not to Bernard, not to Wyatt, not to anything.
“I’m with you, Scarlet,” he said, his voice fierce now, filled with a determination he hadn’t realized he possessed. “No matter what happens. We’ll face this together.”
She was silent for a moment, and when she spoke again, her voice was small, fragile even. “Together.”
Tucker clenched his fists, his resolve hardening. Together. He would do whatever it took to keep her safe, to prove that she could trust him, even if it meant tearing down everything he had built to make it happen.
He was done hiding behind walls. It was time to fight for what mattered.
