Chapter 52: Sparks of Betrayal

The sun dipped below the skyline, casting the city in a muted shade of orange as Scarlet sat at her desk, her fingers idly tracing the edge of a glass. The hum of the office around her felt distant, like a far-off storm on the horizon. Her mind was elsewhere, caught in the crossfire between trust and betrayal, between the man who had once been her everything and the one who had become her unexpected ally.

Bernard had always been there for her. Since her return, since the fall of her family’s legacy, he had been a constant presence steady, reliable. He had a calm demeanor that soothed her when her thoughts spiraled, when the chaos seemed too overwhelming. He was everything she had needed in a moment of vulnerability. But as they worked side by side, gathering evidence and strategizing for the confrontation with Wyatt, something else began to stir within her. Something that made her question the boundaries of their relationship.

She had always respected Bernard, but lately, there was an undeniable connection between them. It was subtle at first small gestures, a lingering glance, the soft brush of his hand against hers as they poured over documents. But it was there. The warmth. The undeniable tension that simmered beneath their interactions. The kind of tension that didn’t go unnoticed, no matter how much they tried to ignore it.

Scarlet exhaled sharply, her gaze flickering to the open file in front of her. She had been avoiding the inevitable question for days, but now, it loomed over her like a storm cloud. Could she trust Bernard? Was he truly on her side, or was this just a way for him to carve out a place for himself in a game much bigger than either of them realized?

Could I trust him?

The question gnawed at her as she leaned back in her chair, her eyes narrowing as she glanced at the clock on the wall. It was late too late for anyone but the two of them to still be in the office. Bernard had promised he would stay late to help her finish the paperwork, but she hadn’t expected this. She hadn’t expected to be alone with him in this moment of uncertainty.

As if on cue, the door creaked open, and Bernard stepped inside, his expression unreadable, a stack of papers in his hands. His eyes met hers, and for a moment, they just stood there, locked in a silent battle of wills.

Scarlet’s breath caught in her throat. There was something about him now, something different. The familiar comfort she had once felt around him was fading, replaced by a quiet uncertainty. She had always known that Bernard had his own demons, his own history with Wyatt. But now, she couldn’t help but wonder if his motivations were entirely pure. Or if he was simply using her to further his own agenda.

“Scarlet.” Bernard’s voice broke the silence, his tone softer than usual. “You’ve been quiet all night. Are you alright?”

She hesitated, not sure how to respond. Instead, she stood up and walked toward the window, staring out at the city below, her thoughts a tangled mess. “I’m fine, Bernard. Just... thinking.”

He followed her gaze, standing just a few steps behind her. There was a long pause before he spoke again, his voice low, as though he were testing the waters of their fragile connection. “You’re worried about something. I can see it. What is it?”

She turned to face him, her eyes narrowing, her lips pressed into a thin line. She didn’t want to say it aloud, didn’t want to acknowledge the doubt that had been eating away at her. But she couldn’t keep it inside any longer. “I’m worried that I’ve been using you,” she admitted, her voice shaky. “I’m worried that I’ve been using you to get closer to Wyatt, to bring him down. I don’t know if I can trust you.”

Bernard’s face softened, his expression unreadable. He took a step toward her, his gaze never leaving hers. “Scarlet... you’re not the only one who’s been using someone. Wyatt’s been using me too. I’ve been complicit in his schemes for years, and now, I want to make it right.”

Her heart pounded in her chest, the weight of his words settling over her. She had always known Bernard had his own past, his own struggles with Wyatt, but hearing it like this hearing him admit it so openly made her question everything she thought she knew.

“I’m not using you, Scarlet,” he continued, his voice steady but tinged with regret. “I’m doing this because it’s the right thing to do. And because I’m not going to let Wyatt win. Not again.”

Her eyes searched his face, looking for any sign of deception, but all she saw was sincerity. She wanted to believe him. She needed to. But the doubt still lingered, like a shadow, hovering just beyond her reach. Was he telling the truth?

Before she could respond, Bernard stepped forward, closing the distance between them. He reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face, his touch soft and deliberate. The simple gesture made her heart race, and for a moment, she forgot all the questions swirling in her mind. All she could focus on was the warmth of his hand against her skin, the intensity in his gaze.

“Scarlet,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion, “You have to trust me. I’m here for you. I’ve always been here for you.”

Her breath hitched in her throat. The connection between them was undeniable, but the question remained was it enough? Could she trust him? Or was this just another dangerous game she was being pulled into?

For a moment, she stood there, frozen, her mind torn between the desire to believe him and the fear of being betrayed again. The choice was hers to make, and she had to make it now.
