Chapter 53: The end has come

The pack had retreated, uneasy and restless. Only Kael and Aria remained beneath the dark sky. The ruins around them—the shattered stones, crumbling walls—stood as a mirror of what was left between them: fragile, breaking, but still standing.

Aria’s arms wrapped tightly around herself as the cold night air kissed her skin. The Moon glowed overhead, and with every minute, the Seer’s whispers clawed at the edges of her mind.

Kael approached quietly, gaze drinking her in like it might be the last time. “Can’t sleep?”

Aria forced a weak smile. “How could I? I feel like everything is ending… and I can’t stop it.”

Kael sighed, pulling her close without asking. She came willingly, resting her head on his chest, listening to the steady thrum of his heartbeat. “It’s not the end,” he whispered. “Not for you.”

Her voice trembled. “Kael… you’re not telling me something.”

He froze.

“I feel it,” she whispered. “In the way you look at me. Like you’re already saying goodbye.”

Kael’s throat worked, but he stayed silent.

Tears slipped down her cheeks as she gripped his shirt tighter. “Please… don’t lie to me. Not tonight. If you’re planning something… if you’re going to—”

“I’m not losing you,” Kael cut in, voice breaking. He cupped her face, forcing her to meet his eyes. “Do you hear me, Aria? No matter what happens, I will protect you.”

“But what if protecting me means I lose you?” she sobbed. “I can’t… I can’t watch you die, Kael.”

His forehead pressed against hers, eyes shining. “You won’t. You’ll live, Aria. You’ll survive this, with or without me.”

Her hands trembled as they cupped his cheeks. “I don’t want to live without you. I don’t care about fate, or the prophecy, or that cursed moon. All I want is you.”

A broken sound left Kael’s throat. He kissed her—slow, deep, desperate. The kind of kiss that said goodbye without the words. The kind that seared itself into the soul.

When they broke apart, Aria was breathless, her lips trembling. “I love you,” she whispered. “I don’t care what came before or what’s coming. Right now, I love you, Kael Stormborn.”

Kael’s chest ached with the force of it. “And I have always loved you, in every life… in every breath. Past. Present. Future.”

They held each other as the moon climbed higher, the air thick with unspoken truths.

Finally, Kael pulled back just enough to smile—a bittersweet, broken thing. “Sleep, Aria. Just this once… let me be the one carrying the weight.”

She stared at him, tears spilling, but she nodded.

Kael stayed there, holding her until her breathing softened against his chest. Only then, with trembling hands, did he press a kiss to her hair and whisper against her skin—words she would never hear:

“Forgive me, my love.”

Then, with one final lingering glance, Kael stood and walked away from the woman he would die for—toward the fate he had already chosen.

The sky bled crimson. The cursed Blood Moon crept into the heavens like a herald of doom, bathing the world in blood-red light.

The ground trembled beneath Kael’s feet as he stood at the pack’s borders, his warriors lined behind him. But it wasn’t just rogues they faced—dark shadows crept in, summoned by the Seer’s power. Creatures that belonged to no realm, born of death and rage.

Kael’s eyes burned gold. “It’s time,” he muttered.

From the distance, the first howl ripped through the air—a sound twisted by rage and darkness. The rogues surged forward, their eyes glowing with unnatural light, foam dripping from their snarling mouths.

“Hold the line!” Kael roared, his Alpha voice shaking the ground. “For Bloodfang!”

The clash was instant—bone met bone, claw tore through flesh. The night filled with snarls, screams, and the sickening sound of bodies hitting the earth.

Kael moved like a storm, ripping through enemies with brutal precision. But even as he fought, his gaze kept darting back toward the ruins—toward where Aria slept, or so he hoped.

He didn’t see when she woke.

He didn’t see her breath quicken, her body arch as if pulled by invisible strings.

Aria’s eyes shot open—pitch black, no longer her own.

The Seer’s voice slithered through her mind like venom. “It’s time, child. Become what you were born to be.”

“No,” Aria whimpered, clutching her head. “No… please.”

“You cannot fight me. You were never meant to survive. You were meant to destroy.”

The ground beneath her cracked as power surged through her body. Aria screamed, but it wasn’t her voice anymore.

Her hands, trembling and clawed, slammed into the ground. Energy exploded out—red, dark, cursed. A wave of destruction pulsed through the earth, throwing nearby warriors and enemies alike off their feet.

Kael felt it. He turned, horror clawing through his chest. “Aria.”

The pack faltered, terror setting in as their gazes snapped to the ruins.

“She’s waking,” someone whispered. “The Lunari—she’s waking.”

Kael’s heart broke as he saw her—glowing with raw, dangerous power, her form bathed in the Blood Moon’s light.

The Seer appeared then, like a ghost born from the shadows. Her smile was cruel. “It begins.”

Kael snarled, lunging, but the Seer was untouchable.

“You should’ve listened, Alpha,” she taunted. “Now… watch her destroy everything you swore to protect.”

Aria’s scream split the night as the Seer’s essence clawed through her. “Kael… help me…”

He ran toward her, but a wall of shadows slammed him back.

“You don’t get to save her,” the Seer hissed. “You’ll die watching her turn.”

Aria’s body shook violently, her hands covered in blood—though she didn’t know whose. Her vision blurred between reality and something darker.

Rogues circled, some turning to flee at the sheer power radiating off her. But others, mad with bloodlust, surged toward Kael.

The pack fought to reach their Alpha, but the dark forces kept them at bay.

“Aria!” Kael bellowed, his voice breaking. “Fight her! Stay with me!”

Her black eyes snapped to him—and for a heartbeat, just a heartbeat, she was still Aria.

“I… I can’t…” she whispered, tears of blood slipping down her cheeks. “Kael… I’m scared…”

His chest shattered. “I’m here. I’m coming for you.”

But the Seer laughed, her form melting into the shadows. “It’s too late, Alpha. She belongs to me now.”

The moon pulsed, a dark, twisted heartbeat.

And then—Aria screamed again as a blast of dark energy exploded from her, sending everyone flying.

Kael slammed into the ground, coughing blood. His ears rang, his body broken—but his eyes stayed locked on her.

Aria stood in the center, her body trembling, her face pale… and the Seer’s voice slipping from her lips:

“The end has come.”

The battlefield lay in ruin.

Aria…

Half herself, half the Seer, standing under the Blood Moon’s curse.

Kael forced out a broken whisper. “Aria…”

But the voice that answered wasn’t hers.

“She’s gone, Alpha. Now… watch as I burn your world to ash.”
