Chapter 172
Chapter 172
Author’s POV
The helicopter's spotlight scoured the docks like a predator searching for prey. Ethan and Lila crouched behind a stack of shipping containers, their breaths shallow as the rotor blades thundered overhead. The calm of the water around them was a complete contrast to the chaos unfolding.
Ethan scanned their surroundings, calculating their next move. The whir of the helicopter grew louder, and the unmistakable clatter of boots echoed from the distance.
“They’re closing in,” Lila said.
Ethan’s brow furrowed. “We need to keep moving. They want to pin us down here.”
Grayson and Reyes were a few blocks away, holed up in a dilapidated warehouse as Grayson worked to finish decoding their escape route. The uploaded files had triggered an immediate response from the syndicate’s network, setting off alarms across their operations. But the team knew that exposing them was only the first step.
“It’s too quiet here,” Reyes muttered, pacing near the entrance. Reyes hastily bandaged his injured arm, but the pain didn't slow him down.
Grayson glanced up from his laptop. “The quiet works for us right now. It means they don’t know we are here yet.”
Reyes shook his head. “Or they’re waiting for the right moment to strike.”
As if on cue, a single gunshot shattered the silence, rebounding off the metal beams above them.
“They are here,” Grayson said grimly, slamming his laptop shut.
Back at the docks, Ethan and Lila swiftly slipped between containers, keeping low as armed operatives spread out, swarming the area.
One of them shouted, "Over there!" as a barrage of bullets sprayed their former hiding spot.
“We’re out of time,” Ethan said, pulling Lila toward the edge of the pier.
“And into what?” she asked, her tone laced with urgency.
Ethan pointed to a small fishing boat tied to a nearby dock. “That.”
They sprinted toward the boat as the operatives closed in. Lila jumped aboard first, untying the ropes as Ethan started the engine.
The boat roared to life, but a spray of bullets struck its hull just as they began to move.
“We won't be able to go far in this,” Lila said, assessing the damage.
“We just need to buy some time.” Ethan said, his expression rigid.
Meanwhile, Reyes and Grayson fought fiercely to hold their ground. The warehouse has become a battlefield, the air thick with smoke and the sound of gunfire.
“We can’t stay here!” Reyes shouted, taking down an operative with a calculated shot.
Grayson nodded, grabbing his equipment. “I’ve got what we need. Let’s move!”
The two men bolted for the exit, dodging bullets as they went. Outside, the streets were eerily deserted, the city seeming to hold its breath.
“Extraction point is five minutes out,” Grayson said, checking his watch.
Reyes nodded. “Let’s get there in three.”
On the water, Ethan steered the damaged boat toward the industrial outskirts of the city. The helicopter was still tracking them, its spotlight piercing through the darkness.
“They are not letting go,” Lila said, gripping the side of the boat as it rocked violently.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “Let them follow. We will soon turn this around.”
Lila looked at him sharply. “What are you planning?”
“Keep them focused on us,” he said. “Grayson and Reyes need the distraction.”
“You are betting on a lot of variables,” she replied, but there was no hesitation in her voice.
“Trust me,” Ethan said, meeting her gaze.
“I always do,” she said softly, her resolve unwavering.
At the extraction point, Grayson and Reyes arrived just as a convoy of black SUVs sped into view.
“Of course,” Reyes muttered, raising his weapon.
The vehicles screeched to a halt, and heavily armed operatives poured out.
Grayson dove for cover as gunfire erupted. “We are cornered!”
Reyes gritted his teeth, returning fire. “Take cover. We have handled worse. And they're about to see a show.”
But the odds weren’t in their favor. The syndicate’s forces were relentless, their precision leaving little room for error.
Ethan and Lila’s boat sputtered as the engine began to fail. The helicopter loomed closer, its spotlight blinding as it hovered directly above them.
"We didn't prepare for this," Lila said, covering her eyes.
Ethan reached into a compartment, pulling out a flare gun. “We are not dying today.”
Before Lila could question him, he fired the flare directly at the helicopter. It struck the tail rotor, sparking an explosion that sent the aircraft spiralling out of control.
As the helicopter plunged into the water behind them, sending a massive wave towards their boat, Ethan yelled, "Hold on!"
The impact nearly capsized them, but Ethan managed to stabilise the vessel.
“That was reckless,” Lila said, though with a hint of admiration in her voice.
“It worked, didn’t it?” Ethan replied, giving her a warm smile.
At the warehouse, Reyes and Grayson were running low on ammunition. The operatives were closing in, their tactics ruthless.
“This won't last long,” Grayson said, reloading with shaking hands.
Reyes glanced at him. “We just need to hold out a little longer.”
But even as he spoke, the weight of the situation pressed down on them. The syndicate wasn’t just fighting to stop them—it was fighting to destroy them entirely.
When Ethan and Lila finally reached a secluded place, they abandoned the boat and moved on foot. The city lights were distant, the quiet of the industrial area masking the danger still lurking.
“We are not out of this yet,” Ethan said, scanning their surroundings.
Lila nodded, her grip tightening on her weapon. “We never were.”
But as they turned a corner, they came face-to-face with a figure they hadn't expected to see.
Langston.
His clothes were tattered, his face bruised, but his expression was one of fierce determination.
“You didn’t think I would sit this one out, did you?” He said in a low, steady voice.
Ethan’s jaw tightened. “You’re supposed to be in hiding.”
“And miss the grand finale?” Langston replied, his tone almost mocking. “I’ve got information you need—about the syndicate’s backup plan.”
Lila frowned. “What backup plan?”
Langston hesitated, glancing around as if ensuring they were alone. “They knew this was coming. The files you revealed are only the tip of the iceberg. They have already activated their emergencies.”
“What kind of emergencies?” Ethan demanded.
Langston’s face darkened. “They’re targeting your families, your allies. They are targeting anyone they believe could have assisted you. It’s scorched earth, Ethan. They are not just trying to kill you—they’re trying to erase you.”
Lila’s blood ran cold. “We need to give them a warning.”
“There’s no time,” Langston said. "To prevent this, you must remove the snake's head tonight."
Ethan’s eyes burnt with resolve. “Then tell us where to find it.”
Langston paused for a moment, his eyes shifting between them, before nodding. “Follow me.”
Grayson and Reyes's safe house erupted in flames as the three of them vanished into the shadows. The explosion lit up the night sky, sending a shockwave through the city.
The syndicate wasn’t retreating. It was escalating.
And the final confrontation was closer than any of them realised.
