Chapter 171

Chapter 171
Author’s POV

The syndicate was bleeding. Ethan and his group  had destroyed their bunker, captured or killed key players, and exposed their secrets. But a cornered animal is always the most dangerous, and the syndicate was far from finished.

Ethan, Lila, Reyes, and Grayson regrouped in a new safe house—a modest apartment overlooking the industrial docks. The room buzzed with urgency as Grayson connected their stolen data to an isolated network.

“This data ties several high-profile figures directly to the syndicate,” Grayson announced, his eyes scanning the screen. “Politicians, CEOs, and military officials included. If we expose this…”

“They’ll come at us with everything they have,” Reyes interrupted. His tone was sharp, but there was a fire in his eyes. “But it’s our best shot.”

Ethan leaned against the wall, his expression unreadable. “How long until we can send this out?”

“Hours, maybe less,” Grayson replied. “I’m bypassing their firewalls to ensure the files are clean and untraceable once uploaded.”

“Good,” Ethan said, his voice cold. We don't have time to waste.

Outside, the docks were a maze of warehouses and shipping containers. The air was thick with the smell of saltwater and diesel, and the faint hum of cranes operating in the distance masked the tension brewing within the team.

Lila glanced at Ethan, her brows furrowed. “Do you think they know where we are?”

“They probably do,” he replied. “We’ve been a step ahead, but they are catching up. We have to assume they’re already planning their next move.”

Reyes moved to the window, peering out cautiously. “This place is a deathtrap if they find us. One way in, one way out.”

“We won’t be here long,” Ethan answered him. “Once the files go live, we’ll be out of here.”

But the uneasy silence that followed suggested none of them believed they have that luxury.

Hours passed in a rush of frantic typing and hushed planning. The safe house remained eerily quiet, a peaceful oasis before an inevitable storm.

Then, it came.

The first sign of trouble was a faint click—barely audible but unmistakable to seasoned ears. Ethan’s head snapped toward the door, his body tensing.

“Get down!” he yelled.

The explosion ripped through the entryway, sending debris flying and shaking the walls. The team dove for cover as smoke filled the room.

“Didn’t take them long to find us,” Reyes said, coughing as he reached for his weapon.

Ethan moved quickly, grabbing Lila’s arm and pulling her behind an overturned table.
“Grayson, secure the files!”

“On it!” Grayson yelled, frantically typing as his laptop beeped in protest.

The room erupted into chaos as masked operatives stormed in, their weapons blazing. Ethan returned fire, his movements calculated and precise.

“They are here to destroy the data!” Lila yelled over the gunfire.

“Not on my watch,” Ethan snarled.

The fight was brutal and unrelenting. Reyes took down two operatives with deadly accuracy, but more poured in, their formation tight and relentless.

“Grayson!” Ethan called. “How much longer?”

“Two minutes!” Grayson replied, sweat dripping down his face as he worked.

“Make it one!”

Ethan and Lila fought side by side, their teamwork seamless. He covered her as she reloaded, and she returned the favour with pinpoint shots that forced their attackers to scatter.

But the operatives were well-trained, their tactics forcing the team into tighter quarters.

“They are herding us!” Reyes shouted.

Ethan cursed under his breath. “We need to break through their formation.”

Lila’s gaze shifted to the kitchen. “The gas line. If we can ignite it…”

“Do it,” Ethan said without hesitation.

Lila crawled toward the kitchen, her heart pounding. The gas valve was just within reach, but bullets whizzed past her, splintering the cabinets above.

“Hurry!” Ethan screamed, firing at the operatives to buy her time.

She twisted the valve, the hiss of escaping gas filling the air. “Done!”

Ethan fired a shot at the stove, and the resulting explosion shook the building, throwing the operatives into disarray.

“Go!” Ethan yelled, grabbing Grayson and Reyes as they sprinted toward the back exit.

The team got out safely, the night air a stark contrast to the smoke and fire behind them. But their escape was short-lived.

A black van drove in, cutting off their path. More operatives spilt out, their weapons gleaming under the dim streetlights.

Ethan’s mind whirled. They were outgunned and outnumbered, but retreat wasn’t an option.

“Split up!” he ordered. “Grayson, take the files and wait for us at the extraction point. Reyes, cover him. Lila, you’re with me.”

Grayson hesitated. “What about…”

“Go!” Ethan barked.

The operatives closed in, their movements methodical. Ethan and Lila ducked behind a stack of crates, their breaths coming in ragged gasps.

“This is not sustainable,” Lila said, her voice laced with frustration.

Ethan let out a faint smirk. “Since when has anything we’ve done been sustainable?”

Lila rolled her eyes, unable to hold back the small smile that curled on her lips.

Grayson and Reyes disappeared into the maze of the docks, their footsteps fading into the distance. Ethan and Lila held their ground, dropping down operatives one by one.

But then, a chilling sound broke through the chaos—a slow clap.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed as a man stepped out of the shadows. He was tall and imposing, his tailored suit untouched by the mayhem around him.

“Well done,” the man said, his voice smooth and condescending. "You've been a pain and  frustration for an extended period."

Ethan raised his weapon. “And you are?”

The man smiled gently. “Just someone ensuring balance is restored.”

Lila tightened her grip on her gun. “You’re too late. The files are already in play.”

The man chuckled. “Oh, I’m aware, little bird. But you have underestimated the reach of our influence.”

Ethan didn’t flinch. “And you’ve underestimated us.”

Before the man could respond, a deafening roar filled the air. A cargo crane swung into view, its massive hook crashing into the operatives’ SUV.

Ethan took advantage of the distraction, firing at the man’s leg. He staggered but managed to retreat into the shadows.

“Let’s move!” Ethan shouted, grabbing Lila’s hand.

They sprinted toward the docks, the sound of sirens growing louder in the distance.

As they reached the water’s edge, Ethan’s comm crackled to life. “We’re clear,” Grayson’s voice came through. “The files are uploaded.”

Ethan allowed himself a brief moment of relief. “Good. Now we finish this.”

Lila nodded, her determination matching his. “Together.”

But as they turned to leave, a spotlight illuminated the docks, and the sound of approaching helicopters filled the air.

“Looks like they are not done yet,” Ethan muttered.

Lila smirked. “Neither are we.”

And with that, they disappeared into the shadows, ready for the next battle.
