Chapter 167

Chapter 167
Lila’s POV

The hum of the boat engine was the only sound as we sped through the dark waters, putting as much distance as we could between us and the burning syndicate facility. My adrenaline hadn’t faded; my heart was still racing from the chaos we’d just escaped. Every muscle in my body was tense, ready for the next possible danger.

Ethan sat across from me, his brow furrowed and his eyes scanning the horizon. The portable drive I had guarded with my life sat between us, a small device carrying the weight of everything we had fought for.

“We need to get this back to Grayson,” I said, breaking the silence. “The sooner we access it, the better.”

Ethan nodded, his voice low but firm. “Yeah. But we can’t go straight back to the safe house. They’ll be tracking us.”

He was right. The syndicate wasn’t just going to sit back and let us walk away with their secrets. They’d already shown their willingness to throw everything they had at us.

I gripped the edge of the boat, the cold wind biting at my face. “What about the explosions back there? Someone else was hitting the facility. That wasn’t us.”

Ethan’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Whoever it was, they saved us. For now. But I don’t like unknown variables.”

I couldn’t argue with that. This war was complicated enough without strange figures adding to the mix.

By the time we reached the dock, the first hints of dawn were creeping over the horizon. Ethan helped me out of the boat, his hand warm and steady against mine. Even though the city was still sleeping and the streets were quiet, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching us.

We moved quickly, blending into the early morning crowd as we headed toward the temporary safe house Grayson had arranged. It wasn’t much—just a rundown apartment in a forgotten part of town—but it was better than nothing.

Inside, the tension was thick. Grayson greeted us with his usual calm, but there was a spark of urgency in his eyes as he took the portable drive from me.

“This could be it,” he said, get to work already. “If this has what I think it does, we’ll finally have the leverage we need to bring them down.”

Ethan leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. “Be fast with it. We don’t have time to waste.”

Grayson worked in silence, the only sound in the room the clicking of keys and the occasional beep from his computer. I sat beside Ethan, my leg bouncing nervously.

“You okay?” he asked, his voice soft enough that only I could hear.

“I’m fine,” I replied, though we both knew it wasn’t entirely true. The weight of everything was pressing down on me—the danger, the losses, the constant uncertainty.

He reached out, his hand brushing mine. “We’ll get through this, Lila. Together.”

His words were a balm to my frayed nerves, but before I could respond, Grayson let out a low whistle.

“This is big,” he said, spinning his monitor around to face us. “This drive has everything—transaction records, offshore accounts, blackmail material, and...” He trailed off, his expression darkening.

“What is it?” Ethan demanded, stepping closer.

Grayson hesitated. “There’s a kill list. High-value targets. People they’ve eliminated—or plan to.”

I felt a chill run down my spine. “Who’s on it?”

Grayson’s eyes flicked to me, then back to Ethan. “You are. Both of you.”

The room seemed to freeze. My breathing seized, and I glanced at Ethan, whose expression hardened into something unreadable.

“They’re coming for us,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Let them try,” Ethan replied, his tone cold and lethal.

The sudden buzz of Grayson's phone broke the tension. He answered it, his expression tightening as he listened.

“Trouble,” he said, hanging up. “Reyes says there’s movement near the safe house. We’ve been compromised.”

Ethan was already moving, grabbing his weapon and tossing me mine. “We need to leave. Now.”

The next few minutes were a rush. Grayson packed up his equipment while Ethan and I guided the perimeter. The street outside was eerily quiet, but I knew better than to trust appearances.

“We’ll take the back exit,” Ethan said, his voice low but steady.

Grayson nodded, slinging his bag over his shoulder. “I’ve got a car waiting a few blocks away. It’s untraceable.”

We moved quickly and silently, sticking to the shadows as we made our way out of the building. My pulse was racing, every sound amplified in the stillness.

The first shot rang out halfway to the car.

“Down!” Ethan shouted, pulling me behind a parked car as bullets peppered the street around us.

“They have us cornered!” Grayson yelled, his voice tinged with panic.

Ethan peered over the edge of the car, his sharp eyes sweeping over the area. “Three shooters, rooftops. We need to take them out.”

I nodded, gripping my weapon tightly. “I’ll cover you.”

He didn’t argue, and together we moved in perfect sync. I fired toward the rooftops, forcing the shooters to duck while Ethan advanced. His quick, precise movements knocked down one shooter in seconds.

“Two more!” he called, his voice loud over the chaos.

Grayson and I provided cover as Ethan worked his way toward the second target. My heart pounded as I fired shot after shot, my focus razor-sharp.

As the second shooter collapsed, the third attempted to flee, but Ethan outpaced him. His shot rang out, and the final threat was neutralised.

“Clear!” he said, his voice sharp and commanding.

We didn’t waste time. Grayson led us to the car, and within moments, we were speeding away, leaving the chaos behind.

At the new safe house, the atmosphere was electric. Grayson immediately set up his equipment, his determination palpable. Ethan paced, his energy buzzing with the adrenaline of the fight.

“We need to move fast,” Grayson said as he plugged in the drive. “They won’t stop until we’re dead.”

“We will hit them first,” Ethan replied, his tone cold and final.

I nodded, my resolve hardening. “We’ve got the tools. Now we use them.”

As Grayson worked, I felt a surge of hope mingled with fear. The syndicate was crumbling, but the fight wasn’t over yet. And as much as I wanted to believe we were winning, I knew the most dangerous enemies were still waiting in the shadows.

For the time being, however, we have the advantage. And we weren’t letting go.
