Chapter 166

Chapter 166
Lila’s POV

The safe house exuded a serene aura, yet I sensed the emergence of fissures. Grayson’s fingers moved over his keyboard as he worked to decide the files, while Reyes sat with his arm in a sling, wincing with every movement. Ethan paced in the corner, his energy restless and barely contained. We had dealt a significant blow to the syndicate, but we knew the war wasn’t over.

Grayson suddenly leaned back in his chair, his face illuminated by the glow of the screen. “I’ve got something,” he said, his voice sharp with excitement.

I walked over, my heart thudding, Reyes followed. “What is it?” I asked.

“Blueprints,” he replied. “Blueprints for an offshore facility. It’s massive. It appears to be used for processing some sort of substance. Weapons, maybe drugs. Either way, it’s important.”

Ethan stopped pacing and joined us. “How secure?”

“Extremely. This place has layers of encrypted access, guards, and enough defenses to make a small army think twice,” Grayson said grimly.

“We’ll need to hit it hard,” I said. “Whatever they’re doing there, it’s their lifeline. If we remove it, it will leave them crippled.”

Reyes snorted. “Easy for you to say. You’re not the one with a busted arm.”

“Then we’ll just have to make it worth the risk,” I said, my voice firm.

Hours later, we stood in front of a projection of the blueprint Grayson had pulled. The offshore facility loomed like a fortress, surrounded by a network of security checkpoints and patrol routes.

“It’s not just about breaking in,” Grayson said, pointing to a red-highlighted area. “This server room is the nerve center. If we can access it, we can download everything—names, locations, transactions. However, it is located deep within the facility, making our journey there quite challenging.”

“We’ve been to hell and back before. This won't be any exception,” Ethan said, his tone showing determination.

I looked at him and saw the weight of his determination. His eyes were cold and calculating, his jaw set. It struck me that no matter how much we’d been through, Ethan was always ready to push forward—to fight.

We left under the cover of night, our team splitting into two groups. Reyes stayed behind to coordinate remotely with Grayson, who monitored everything from the safe house. Ethan and I took a small speedboat, skimming across the dark waters toward the facility.

The plan was simple enough: infiltrate, extract the data, and get out. But plans never survived contact with reality, and I knew we had have to adapt on the fly.

As we neared the facility, the sheer size of it became overwhelming. Spotlights scanned the water, and armed guards patrolled the docks. We ditched the boat a hundred yards out and swam the rest of the way, the cold seeping through my wetsuit.

Ethan surfaced beside me, his breathing steady. He gave a quick hand signal— to move forward—and I nodded.

The first checkpoint went smoothly. We took out two guards silently, their bodies slumping into the shadows. Inside, the facility was a maze of sterile hallways and steel doors. Ethan led the way, his movements precise and confident.

“Grayson, we’re in,” I whispered into my comm.

“Good. Keep heading north. You will hit the main control room in three turns,” he replied.

The tension was suffocating as we moved deeper. Every shadow felt like a threat, every sound a potential ambush. But we kept going, believing this could be the breakthrough.

We reached the control room without any restraints which only made me more nervous. It was too easy.

“Something’s not right,” I murmured as Ethan placed a small charge on the door.

He gave me a grim smile. “It never is.”

The door blew inward with a muffled pop, and we stormed inside. The room was empty except for rows of servers humming softly.

“Start the download,” Ethan ordered, tossing me a portable drive.

I moved quickly, plugging it into the nearest console. Grayson’s voice crackled in my ear. “You’ve got three minutes. The encryption is challenging, but this method will successfully decrypt it.

As the files began transferring, a noise behind us made me freeze. I turned to see a squad of guards entering, their weapons aimed at us.

“Drop your guns!” the lead guard barked.

Ethan didn’t hesitate. He opened fire, diving behind a console for cover. I followed suit, the portable drive still working as chaos erupted around us. Bullets tore through the air, sparks flying as they rebounded off the metal walls.

“Grayson, we are surrounded!” I shouted.

“I see that. Hold on—activating the fire suppression system now,” he said.

A second later, white foam sprayed from the ceiling, obscuring the guards’ vision and giving us the window we needed. Ethan moved like a predator, taking them out one by one while I shielded the drive.

“Transfer complete!” I yelled, yanking the drive free.

“Time to go,” Ethan said, covering me as we retreated.

The facility was alive with alarms as we fought our way back to the docks. More guards poured in, their footsteps echoing in the corridors. Ethan and I moved as a force, each of us covering the other in a deadly dance.

We reached the exit just as a squad blocked our path. I raised my weapon, but before I could fire, an explosion rocked the building. The explosion shook the walls, throwing the guards off balance.

“Reyes?” I asked through the comm.

“Not me,” he replied, his voice tight. “You’ve got another player in the game.”

Another explosion followed, this one closer. Ethan grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the water.

“Whoever they are, they are buying us time,” he said.

We reached the boat and sped away, the facility burning behind us. My hands trembled as I looked at the portable drive in my hand, the weight of our victory sinking in.

"We succeeded," I uttered, my voice barely audible over a whisper.

Ethan nodded, his eyes on the horizon. “Yeah. But I want to know who’s out there playing hero. It wasn’t a coincidence.”

“Do you think it’s someone from the syndicate?” I asked.

“Maybe,” he said. "Or perhaps it's another individual who shares our desire for their end."

It felt like the start of something bigger as we drove into the night. Whatever had happened at the facility, it had shifted the game in ways we didn’t yet understand.

And as much as we’d won tonight, I’m certain the fight was far from over. But we were getting closer.
