Chapter 161

Chapter 161
Lila’s POV

The safe house was too quiet. It was an unnatural silence, as if the city itself was holding its breath. Ethan and the others dispersed across the apartment, each of us readying ourselves for the next step. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

I sat on the couch, staring at the device Elene had risked everything to get. The data it contained could destroy the syndicate, expose their operatives, and bring an end to years of suffering. But it also painted a target on all of us.

Ethan walked into the room, his expression unreadable as always. “You’ve been staring at that thing for hours,” he said, sitting beside me.

I shrugged. “I don't quite understand how something so tiny could possess such immense power.”

He reached over and gently took my hand. “It’s not the device that has the power. It’s what we do with it.”

I nodded, trying to draw strength from his words, but the knot in my stomach didn’t loosen.

Later that evening, the air in the apartment shifted. It started with a faint creak in the hallway outside, too soft for anyone else to notice. I froze, straining to listen, my pulse quickening.

“Ethan,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.

He looked up from the table where he and Grayson were going over the plans. “What is it?”

“Something’s out there,” I said.

Reyes immediately moved to the door, his hand on his gun. Ethan stood, his movements calm but deliberate. “Stay here,” he said to me and Elene.

The moment they opened the door, chaos erupted.

The first shot interrupted the silence like a thunderclap. Ethan tackled me to the ground just as bullets tore through the walls, sending splinters of wood and plaster flying.

“We have been exposed!” Grayson shouted, returning fire.

As I crawled toward Elene, huddled behind the couch holding the device, my heart pounded. “We need to get out of here!” I yelled over the noise.

Ethan was already at my side, pulling me to my feet. “Out the back!” he ordered.

Reyes covered us as we moved toward the kitchen, where a narrow door led to the alley. The gunfire was terrifying, and the smell of smoke and gunpowder burned my throat.

Grayson threw open the door, and we stumbled into the cool night air. “Go! I’ll hold them off!”

“No!” I protested, but Ethan grabbed my arm and dragged me forward.

“He knows what he’s doing,” Ethan said, his tone sharp. “We have to keep moving.”

The alley was a den of shadows and dead ends. We ran blindly, the sound of footsteps and shouts growing closer behind us.

“This way!” Reyes called and guided us towards a side street.

Just as we thought we were clear, a white hilux screeched to a halt in front of us. Four men in black gear jumped out, weapons drawn.

“Hand over the device!” one of them barked.

Elene held it tighter, her eyes wide with fear. Ethan stepped in front of her, his gun raised. “You want it? Come and have it.”

The standoff lasted only a second before chaos ensued.

Ethan moved swiftly, dispatching two of the attackers with accurate shots. Reyes tackled another, their struggle brutal and unrelenting. I grabbed Elene and pulled her behind a dumpster, my hands shaking as I tried to think of a way out.

“Lila!” Ethan’s voice cut through the chaos. “Take her and run!”

I hesitated, my instincts screaming to stay and fight, but the urgency in his voice left no room for argument. I nodded, gripping Elene’s arm as we pushed down another alley.

Behind us, the gunfire continued, each shot making the hair on my skin jump. My mind raced with every possible worst-case scenario, but I couldn’t let myself fall apart. Not now.

We rounded a corner and found ourselves in a deserted courtyard. The eerie silence left my skin crawling.

“I think we lost them,” I said, trying to catch my breath.

Elene didn’t respond. She was staring past me, her face pale.

I turned slowly, my heart sinking as I saw another group of men blocking the exit.

“Well, well,” one of them said, slightly smiling. “Looks like the boss will be pleased.”

My mind whired searching for an escape. There was nowhere to run, and I didn’t have a weapon.

“Hand over the device, and maybe we will let you live,” another man said, stepping closer.

“Not a chance,” I replied, trying to sound braver than I felt.

Before they could react, a deafening roar filled the air. I barely had time to process what was happening before a car barreled into the courtyard, slamming into two of the men.

The driver’s door flew open, and Ethan jumped out, gun blazing.

“Get down!” he shouted.

I pulled Elene to the ground as the gunfire erupted again. Ethan moved with deadly precision, taking out the remaining attackers in seconds.

When the dust settled, he rushed over to us, his eyes scanning for any sign of  injuries. “Are you okay?”

I nodded, my breath shaky. “You got here just in time.”

He gave me a faint smile. “Always.”

Back at the new safe house, the tension was palpable. Grayson and Reyes had managed to escape the earlier ambush and were already working on securing the area.

Ethan paced the room, his frustration evident. “They’re getting bolder. It's just a question of time until they discover us once more.

“We need to hit back,” Grayson said, his tone firm. “Take the fight to them.”

Eleanor, still holding tight the device, spoke up. “There’s one more thing I haven’t told you.”

All eyes turned to her.

The data entails more than just the syndicate's operations. It also includes information on their weak points. They engage in internal power struggles and expose their vulnerabilities. We can use it to turn them against each other.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “Why didn’t you tell us this sooner?”

“I wasn’t sure we would survive long enough to use it,” she admitted.

A heavy silence fell over the room as the weight of her words sank in.

“This changes everything,” I said, finally breaking the silence.

Ethan nodded. “It does. But it also makes us even bigger targets.”

“We have been targets from the start,” Grayson said. “Let’s make it count.”

As the night wore on, we began putting together a plan. And for the first time in a long time, we felt in control.

But deep down, I knew the battle was far from over.

And as I lay awake that night, the weight of everything we’d been through pressed down on me. We were closer than ever to the truth, but at what cost?

One thing was certain: we couldn’t stop now.
