Chapter 160

Chapter 160
Author's POV

The hum of the van’s engine filled the silence as Ethan navigated the streets with precision. The city lights cast fleeting patterns through the windows, reflecting the turmoil in their minds. The name "Vincent Albright" weighed heavily on everyone, a new thread in the tangled web they determined to unravel.

Reyes, seated in the back with Lila, quickly went through the scattered documents they had retrieved from the syndicate’s hideout. Lila sat next to him, her gaze distant yet sharp, processing the revelations of the night. Grayson, monitoring their communication lines, kept his eyes glued to the screen of his handheld device.

“We need to analyze everything we’ve got,” Reyes finally spoke, breaking the silence.

Ethan didn’t answer, his focus fixed on the road. His mind whirling with questions. Why had Vincent’s name not come up earlier? What was his connection to the syndicate? And, more importantly, how deep did his influence run?

“Turn right,” Grayson instructed.

Ethan frowned. “That’s not the way to the safe house.”

“We’ve got a little problem,” Grayson said, his voice tense. “I just intercepted chatter on one of the syndicate’s encrypted channels. They are onto us. The safe house is compromised.”

Ethan gripped the steering wheel tighter, cursing under his breath. “How much time do we have?”

“Minutes, maybe less,” Grayson replied.

Reyes exchanged a glance with Lila. “Then we need a new plan. And we need it fast.”

Ethan turned into an industrial district, the streets eerily empty. “There’s an old warehouse I used as a fallback years ago. It’s not ideal, but it could give us the breathing space we need now.”

The van screeched to a halt in front of a decrepit building. Ethan was the first to pop out, gun drawn, scanning for danger.

“Clear,” he said, motioning for the others to follow.

Inside, the warehouse was dark, the air thick with dust. Lila wrinkled her nose, but the urgency of their situation quickly overshadowed her discomfort.

Reyes spread out the documents on a rusted metal table. “Let’s see what we’ve got. There’s no room for mistakes now.”

Grayson nodded, his fingers quickly getting to work over his keyboard as he uncovered files from a flash drive they had seized.

Ethan stood watch by the entrance, his senses on high alert. Even here, he couldn't shake the feeling that someone was still watching them.

“What the hell is this?” Grayson muttered as lines of code flashed across his screen.

“What did you find?” Lila asked, stepping closer.

“These files... they’re not just financial records. These files include blueprints, surveillance logs, and more.”

“What?” Ethan snapped, stepping forward.

Grayson looked up, his expression grim. “They’ve got a list of targets. The list includes prominent politicians, wealthy businessmen, and even leaders of law enforcement agencies. It’s a hit list.”

The room went silent as the weight of the revelation sank in.

“This isn’t just about money or power,” Lila said, her voice trembling. “They’re planning to take out entire systems.”

Reyes clenched his fists. “And Vincent Albright is right at the center of it.”

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed through the warehouse.

“Get down!” Ethan ordered, pulling Lila behind a shelf.

The team scattered, each taking different position, weapons drawn, as shadows moved in the dim light.

“Who’s there?” Reyes called out, his voice firm and steady despite the tension.

A figure stepped into view, hands raised in a gesture of surrender. It was an older woman, her face lined with age but her eyes sharp and calculating.

“Before you shoot, you might want to hear me out,” she said, her voice calm.

"Who are you?" Ethan demanded, raising his gun at her.

“My name is Elene,” she replied. “I was close to your mother, Ethan. And I’ve been following the syndicate for years.”

Lila gasped. “You knew his mother?”

Elene nodded. “She was trying to stop them, just as you are now. But she wasn't fully aware of their reach.”

“What proof do you have to make us believe what you're saying?” Reyes asked, his gun still raised.

“I have something that could help you,” Elene said, pulling a small device from her coat. “This contains every connection the syndicate has. Every deal and every dirty secret the syndicate has buried. But it’s encrypted. You’ll need me to access it.”

Ethan lowered his weapon slightly, his mind whiring. “Why come to us now?”

Elene stated, "The syndicate is beginning to break apart. Dante’s death has thrown them into disarray, and they’re just barely trying to cover their tracks. This is the perfect time to strike.”

Grayson stepped forward, taking the device from her. “If she’s lying, we’ll know soon enough.”

Elene’s gaze met Ethan’s. “I’ve made my own sacrifice, too, to fight this battle. I won’t waste time convincing you. But if you want to finish what your mother started, you’ll need my help.”

The team worked through the night, the warehouse buzzing with activity. Elene proved invaluable, guiding them through the encrypted files with an expertise that surprised even Grayson.

“We’ve got something,” Grayson finally said, his voice tinged with excitement.

Ethan and Lila rushed over to the table.

“It’s a schedule,” Grayson explained. The top operatives of the syndicate will convene with their supporters. It’s happening in three days.”

“Where?” Ethan asked.

“A private island,” Grayson replied. "The island is heavily fortified, but if we can manage to get in..."

“We can take them all down at once,” Lila finished, her eyes blazing with fury.

The mood shifted, a renewed sense of purpose filling the room. But it was short-lived.

A loud explosion rocked the entire warehouse, sending debris flying. Ethan quickly moved to shield Lila as the team ducked for cover.

Reyes fired at the men pouring into the building, shouting, "They found us!"

Chaos erupted as bullets flew and the sound of shouts filled the air. Elene ducked low behind a metal table, holding tight the device to her chest.

Ethan and Lila fought side by side, their movements seamless as they took down the attackers.

“We need an escape route!” Reyes yelled.

“Cover me!” Grayson shouted, grabbed the device, and sprinted toward the van.

Ethan motioned for Lila to follow. “Go with him! I’ll hold them off!”

“I’m not leaving you!” Lila shot back, firing furiously at an advancing enemy.

“Lila, please!” Ethan growled, pushing her toward the exit.

Lila reluctantly followed Grayson and Elene, giving them cover, while Ethan and Reyes fought to maintain the line.

By the time they reached the van, the attackers were closing in.

“Go, go, go!” Grayson shouted as he started the engine.

Ethan and Reyes jumped in just as bullets rebound off the vehicle.

“Did we get it?” Ethan asked, panting.

Grayson held it up, a triumphant grin on his face. “We got it.”

As the van sped into the night, Lila glanced back at the burning warehouse, her chest heaving.

They had survived, but the battle was far from over. And with the syndicate’s meeting looming, the stakes had never been higher.
