88 - Homecoming and Strategy
Kael POV
Kael stepped into the pack house, the door closing with a heavy thud behind him.
His muscles were sore from the long days of travel for this mission and training, but the adrenaline still thrummed in his veins. His mind was sharp, his thoughts racing with everything he had learned, everything that needed to be done. The mission had been successful, but the weight of what’s coming was already heavy on his shoulders.
He could see Aria standing by the window, her back to him, gazing out at the landscape. Her silhouette was soft in the dim light, her hair falling in waves down her back. Kael’s chest tightened at the sight of her, and for a moment, everything else faded away.
He walked over and stood behind her. His hands, calloused and rough from the mission, brushed against her skin as he wrapped his arms around her waist.
Aria leaned back into him, her body warm against his, and sighed. “You’re back.”
“I’m back,” Kael murmured, pressing his face against her hair, inhaling the scent of her that had been missing from him during the mission. It felt like coming home, and for a moment, he allowed himself to savor the peace of her presence.
Kael pulled back slightly, his fingers gently lifting her chin so that she faced him. Her eyes met his, and though there was a softness in her gaze.
“You look exhausted,” Aria said, her voice soft with concern.
“I am,” Kael admitted, running a hand through his hair.
Aria gave him a small, understanding nod, her eyes filled with the same determination he felt. “Tell me what you learned.”
He sighed, running a hand over his jaw as he leaned against the wall. “The rogues are regrouping. They’re rallying around a new leader. We’re not just dealing with stragglers anymore. They’re more organized. And they have Moonfang in their sights.”
Aria’s breath hitched at the mention of her old pack. “When do we strike?”
Kael looked down at her, his jaw tightening. “Sooner than we planned. We need to hit them while they’re still in disarray, before they have a chance to organize fully. We can’t let them regroup, not with everything on the line.”
“I agree,” Aria said, her voice steady. “But we need to make sure our forces are ready. Both Nightclaw and Moonfang. We can’t afford mistakes.”
Kael gaze unwavering, he said “I’ll speak with Theron and Lyra. We can’t risk a delay. We’ll move at dawn.”
Aria nodded. “I’ll prepare the healers. We’ll be ready.”
Kael gave her a reassuring smile before leaning down to press a soft kiss to her forehead. He could feel the weight of the world in her touch, in the way she stood by his side. She had been his strength, his constant through all the turmoil, and as much as he wanted to shield her from this danger, he knew she was just as much a part of the fight as he was.
“We’ll be alright,” Aria said softly, as if reading his thoughts.
He nodded. The thought of losing anyone, especially her, was a fear he couldn’t fully shake.
They stood in silence for a moment.
Finally, Kael pulled back, his focus sharpening. “I’ll speak with the council. We need to finalize the plan.”
Aria gave him a soft smile and squeezed his hand before kissing his cheek.
Kael took one last look at her before turning to leave. As much as he wanted to stay, to savor their fleeting moments of peace, duty called.
The council room was quiet when Kael entered. Everyone’s expressions serious.
The news Kael had brought from the mission wasn’t something to be taken lightly.
“Kael,” Elias greeted, his voice steady but his eyes sharp with concern. “What’s the word?”
“We strike sooner than planned,” Kael said, his tone unwavering. “We don’t have time to wait. The rogues are regrouping, and we need to hit them before they can fully organize. If we wait, they’ll be ready for us.”
Finn, who had been quiet until now, nodded. “Agreed. But we need to make sure both packs are prepared. We can’t afford any missteps.”
Elias leaned forward, “How do we know we’re even ready for this? We don’t know how many of them are left, and they could have new tactics we haven’t seen.”
“We can’t wait to be fully sure,” Kael replied. “But the longer we wait, the more of a chance they have to strengthen their position.”
Finn’s eyes met Kael’s, expression firm. “Then let’s prepare, by dawn. We’ll hit them hard and fast.”
Elias nodded. “And I’ll get the scouts ready to track their movements. We need to know exactly where they are before we strike.”
“Good,” Kael said, his voice a little more relaxed now that the plan was taking shape. “Then we move out at dawn. No one is to leave the battlefield until this is finished.”
Everyone nodded in agreement, and the tension that had filled the room seemed to ease a bit. They had a plan. It was risky, but it was the best chance they had.
“We need to be united,” Kael added. “The packs can’t afford any divisions. If we stand together, we can win.”
Elias gave him a small smile. “We’ll make sure of it.”
Kael stood, the weight of what was to come settling back into his bones. “Alright. Let’s get ready. We move at first light.”
Later that night, as Kael and Aria walked side by side back to their room, the weight of everything pressing down on them, Kael reached out and took her hand in his.
Aria turned her head to him, her expression softening when their gazes met. "We’ll make it through this, Kael. We always do."
Kael squeezed her hand, appreciating her words, but the doubt still lingered in his chest. "I hope so. I need you to know that no matter what happens, you're everything to me."
Aria smiled, a small but sincere smile. "And you're everything to me. I love you"
Kael stopped and pulled her into a quiet embrace. He needed the strength she gave him, the calm she instilled in him.
“We’ll be alright,” Aria whispered again, her words wrapping around him like a balm.
Kael closed his eyes, letting the warmth of her presence steady him.
As he pulled back, ready to prepare for what lay ahead, he knew one thing for certain: no matter what the future held, they were in this together. And that gave him the strength to face whatever came next.
The final confrontation with the rogues was coming, but Kael was ready. The alliance between Nightclaw and Moonfang was strong, and together, they would face whatever challenge the rogue pack could throw at them.
The night was heavy with anticipation, but Kael knew one thing—the time for hesitation was over. It was time to fight.
