Kael POV
The wind was sharp in the early dawn as Kael crouched near the ridge, his eyes scanning the stretch of darkened forest ahead. The trees here were denser, wilder.
The scents were unfamiliar, the air with the low hum of danger. Behind him, Elias and Finn waited.
Kael’s jaw tightened. They’d slipped past two rogue patrols already. Each step deeper into enemy territory was a risk, but they needed answers.
The defected rogue—Dorian—had offered them a grim warning two days ago: A group of rogues had survived, and they were regrouping. Moonfang would likely be their first target, but if they succeeded, Nightclaw wouldn’t be far behind.
Kael couldn’t afford to wait for war to come to their doorstep. So, he was here—taking the risk himself.
He gave a small signal, and they crept forward, weaving between thick roots and moss-slicked rocks. The mission was simple: gather evidence, observe, and get out.
If they could find out where the rogues were, it would give them a chance to strategize, and stop the attack before it began.
The closer they got to the heart of rogue territory, the more tense the air became.
The forest was eerily quiet, save for the occasional rustle of leaves or the distant call of a night bird. The patrols had grown sparse, a sign that the rogues were being more cautious after the recent losses. Still, Kael kept his senses sharp, trusting the instincts that had gotten him this far.
Ahead, he could see a flickering light. A campfire? His heart rate quickened. This was their target.
Kael motioned for the group to stop. He crouched down, pressing his back against a tree. From here, he could see the faint glow of firelight, and beyond that, the shadowy figures of several rogues, sitting around a fire, talking in low voices. He signaled Elias and Finn to move forward silently, and the three of them slid into position.
"Get close, but don’t engage unless necessary," Kael whispered, his voice barely a breath.
They crept closer, moving with the precision they’d trained for. Kael’s heart pounded in his chest, the adrenaline heightening his senses. As they neared the edge of the clearing, Kael heard snippets of conversation.
Elias motioned to Kael, signaling that he was going to get a closer look. Kael nodded, knowing Elias had the training and instinct to handle it. But as he watched Elias move into the shadows, a sudden sound—a twig snapping—pierced the air.
Kael froze.
His eyes locked on the group of rogues. They hadn’t noticed yet, but Kael knew that silence was fleeting. He made eye contact with Finn, who shifted slightly, ready to act if needed.
"Hold position," Kael muttered. "Stay quiet."
Another rustle came from behind them, and Kael’s heart dropped. They’d been spotted.
The rogue closest to the fire stood up abruptly. "Did you hear that?"
It was the crackle of his voice, the sudden tension in the air that told Kael everything he needed to know. The jig was up.
"Move!" Kael barked, but it was too late.
The rogues rushed to their feet. Kael cursed under his breath as he grabbed Finn by the arm, pulling him back into the shadows.
"We’re outnumbered." Kael said, his voice low but urgent.
But before they could make their move, a voice rang out.
"Alpha Kael," came a low, mocking voice from behind them.
Kael’s blood ran cold. He turned quickly, his body instinctively going into fight mode. But when he saw the rogue standing there, his eyes widened. It was Talon—the rogue Dorian told them to look out for.
"Stay back!" Kael snapped.
Talon grinned, his eyes flashing with something dangerous. "Not so fast, Alpha. I come with information. But it’s going to cost you."
Kael’s grip tightened around his weapon, but he didn’t draw it. Not yet. "What are you talking about?"
Talon stepped closer, his face shadowed in the dim light. "I know what the rogue leaders are planning. And I know you’re on the hunt for them. They’ve been regrouping for weeks. They’re not done yet. But if you want the full picture, you need to listen to me."
Kael’s mind raced, processing the words. Talon had once been part of the rogue pack—he could be playing them, trying to mislead them. But the urgency in his tone felt real.
"Speak," Kael said, his voice firm. "But make it quick."
Talon hesitated, glancing at the rogues behind him before meeting Kael’s gaze. "They’re moving to the Moonfang territory next. They’ve been gathering more recruits. The real leader, the one behind the attacks... he’s still out there, hiding, waiting for the right moment."
Kael’s stomach twisted. "You’re telling me they’re planning an attack on Moonfang?"
Talon nodded. "That’s the plan. They’ll strike soon. And if you don’t act, it’ll be too late. I’m not lying to you, Kael. But I need protection. I want to join your pack. I want to be part of Nightclaw, where I know I can find some peace."
Kael’s mind was whirling. He wasn’t sure if he could trust Talon, but the information he’d provided made too much sense. This was no longer just about rogue stragglers. The real threat was looming—and it was coming fast.
"We’ll talk later," Kael said gruffly. "For now, get out of here. We’ll take care of the rest."
Talon hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Thank you. I’ll be waiting at the border. But remember—if you want to stop this, you’ll need to move quickly."
With that, Talon disappeared into the darkness, leaving Kael and his team to process what had just transpired.
Kael motioned to Finn and Elias, signaling for them to head back to their previous position. "We’re not done yet," he said, his voice calm but urgent. "We need to get back to Nightclaw and figure out how to stop this before it’s too late."
The three of them made their way back to the edge of the rogue territory, the weight of the situation settling over them. Kael’s mind raced as he thought about the implications of Talon’s words.
He knew the stakes were high. Moonfang was his ally, his partner. The rogues were ruthless, and if they had a leader who could rally them together, they could become an even bigger threat.
They reached the boundary of the territory, the safety of Nightclaw’s borders finally within reach.
As Kael looked back at the darkened forest, he knew one thing for sure—this fight wasn’t over. And the rogues would not stop until they had destroyed everything they cared about.
But Kael wasn’t about to let that happen.
He turned to Finn and Elias. "We need to prepare. I want Moonfang ready for this attack. We’ll stop them before they get the chance to make their move."
Finn nodded, his usual playful demeanor replaced by seriousness. "We’ll make sure we’re ready. You have a pack behind you. We fight together."
Kael met Finn’s gaze, and for a moment, there was no doubt in his mind. They were ready.
With that, they made their way back to Nightclaw, prepared for the battle that was about to come.
