Whispers of War
The ground beneath Selene trembled violently, the fissure widening as a sinister energy seeped through the cracks. The temple walls groaned, ancient stones shifting as if the entire structure could collapse at any moment.
Kalen stood at Selene’s side, his muscles taut, his golden eyes scanning the darkness that now oozed from the fissure. “What the hell is that?”
Daemon’s grip tightened on his sword. “Something that should not exist.”
The whispering voice that had spoken before returned, curling around them like smoke.
“The Source has awakened, but so have its enemies…”
Her body tensed. The Source within her pulsed in warning, the mark on her skin glowing faintly with both light and shadow. Whatever lay beyond that fissure was not just a consequence of her choice—it had been waiting.
And now, it was free.
From the fissure, something began to emerge—a figure cloaked in shifting darkness, its form twisting and unraveling like living smoke. Its eyes glowed that same sickly green as the Shadow Warden’s, but this entity felt… older. More malevolent.
She felt a cold chill seep into her bones as the figure solidified, taking on the shape of a man, his long robes woven from the abyss itself. His face was obscured beneath a hood, but his voice was smooth, controlled.
“The Source has chosen its vessel.” His gaze locked onto Selene. “At long last.”
Selene’s jaw clenched. “Who are you?”
The figure took a slow step forward, the air around him warping as if reality itself resisted his presence. “I am known by many names, child. But you may call me Malakar.”
Daemon inhaled sharply, his knuckles whitening around the hilt of his sword. “That name hasn’t been spoken in centuries.”
Aiden shot him a sharp look. “Who is he?”
Daemon’s gaze remained locked on Malakar, his usual composure cracking. “A warlock—one of the first to ever touch the Source. But he wasn’t content with balance. He wanted to corrupt it, bend it to his will.”
Malakar’s lips curled into something resembling amusement. “And they buried my name in the ruins of history. How quaint.”
Selene took a step forward, every instinct screaming that she was standing before something far more dangerous than the Shadow Warden. “What do you want?”
Malakar tilted his head. “I want what was stolen from me.” He raised a hand, his fingers ghosting through the air. The mark on her skin burned. “The Source rejected me long ago. But you… You wield what I could not.”
A pulse of dark energy erupted from him, blasting through the temple like a storm. The force sent her stumbling, but she dug her heels into the ground, forcing herself to remain standing.
Malakar smiled. “Which means I will take it from you.”
Before Selene could react, Malakar’s form blurred. He moved faster than anything she had ever seen, his shadowy form materializing inches away from her.
Instinct took over. She threw up a barrier of light, the energy crackling as Malakar’s hand struck it. The impact sent shockwaves rippling through the temple, cracking the stone floor beneath them.
Kalen shifted in an instant, his wolf form lunging at Malakar. But before he could make contact, the warlock flicked his wrist, and tendrils of shadow lashed out, slamming Kalen into the far wall.
“Kalen!” Selene screamed.
Kalen let out a pained growl, shaking off the impact, but his golden eyes burned with fury.
Daemon and Aiden charged next. Daemon’s blade glowed with enchantment, striking out at the warlock’s midsection, while Aiden launched daggers of pure energy.
Malakar barely moved. He lifted his hand, and darkness swallowed the attacks whole.
Selene’s stomach twisted. He wasn’t just powerful—he was toying with them.
She forced herself to focus, calling on the Source within her. Energy surged through her veins, burning brighter than before.
Balance. The Source had granted her both light and shadow. If Malakar wanted to take her power, she would make him fight for it.
She raised her hands, letting both energies collide, intertwining into something new. Light and darkness swirled together, forming twin blades of pure energy in her hands.
Malakar’s gaze flickered with interest. “Ah. So you do understand.”
Selene didn’t waste time responding. She moved, faster than she thought possible, closing the distance between them in a blink. Her blades slashed out, one infused with light, the other with shadow.
He blocked the first strike, but the second cut across his shoulder.
His eyes flared. “Impressive.”
She pressed forward, attacking again and again. Each time, Malakar countered with shadows, but he wasn’t untouchable. A slash to his ribs. A cut across his forearm. Small victories, but victories nonetheless.
But then his patience snapped.
With a flick of his wrist, darkness exploded outward, knocking Selene off her feet. She hit the ground hard, the air rushing from her lungs.
Malakar loomed over her. “You fight well, but you are still untrained.” His fingers curled, shadows twisting toward her like snakes. “And I am done playing.”
Before she could react, Malakar’s shadows wrapped around her, binding her limbs. She struggled, calling on her power, but the darkness tightened like iron.
Kalen roared, shifting back into his human form as he ran toward her. “Let her go!”
Malakar’s grip didn’t waver. “You do not understand the gift she carries. The Source should never have chosen her.”
Selene gritted her teeth, trying to push back the darkness. But it was different from before—stronger. More invasive.
And then the world tilted.
In an instant, Malakar and Selene vanished into the shadows, leaving Kalen, Daemon, and Aiden alone in the temple.
Selene awoke in a place of pure darkness, her body bound by Malakar’s power. His voice whispered in her ear.
“Now, we begin.”
