The Eternal Choice
The light from the glowing symbol blinded Selene, and for a moment, she felt as though she were weightless, suspended in time. When the light faded, she found herself in a place that defied logic.
The sky was a swirl of gold and silver, with streaks of darkness cutting through it like jagged scars. The ground beneath her feet wasn’t solid—it rippled like water yet held her weight. Strange, glowing plants sprouted around her, their leaves humming softly.
She glanced around, her heart pounding. Kalen, Daemon, and Aiden were nowhere to be seen.
“Where am I?” she whispered, her voice trembling.
The guardian’s voice echoed, soft but firm. “You are in the heart of the Source, where only those chosen may tread. The Shadow Warden was only the beginning. Now, you must face the truth of who you are—and make the eternal choice.”
Selene swallowed hard, her mind racing. The Source pulsed faintly within her, a steady rhythm like a heartbeat.
“What choice?” she asked, her voice steadier now.
The air shimmered, and before her appeared two figures—one cloaked in light, the other in shadow. They were identical in shape, their features hidden, but their presence was overwhelming.
“The Source is dual in nature,” the guardian explained. “Light and shadow, creation and destruction, mercy and wrath. You must decide which aspect will guide you.”
The figure cloaked in light stepped forward, its voice calm and melodic. “Choose me, and you will wield the power to heal, to protect, to create a world of peace and harmony.”
The figure in shadow followed, its voice deep and resonant. “Choose me, and you will command the strength to destroy your enemies, to strike down all who stand in your way. You will be unstoppable.”
Her heart raced as she stared at the two figures. The weight of the decision pressed down on her, heavier than anything she had ever faced.
The figures raised their hands, and visions unfolded around her like a living tapestry.
The figure of light showed her a world bathed in warmth and tranquility. She saw the pack thriving, free from fear and conflict. Kalen stood beside her, his smile bright and unburdened. She saw herself leading with compassion, her power a beacon of hope.
But then the vision shifted. The figure of shadow showed her a different world—one where she stood alone atop a battlefield, her enemies lying in ruin before her. She was powerful, unchallenged, her strength absolute. The pack respected her, feared her, and no one dared to cross her.
The visions faded, and the figures spoke in unison. “The choice is yours, Selene. What kind of leader will you become?”
Selene clenched her fists, her mind reeling. Both visions had their appeal, but neither felt entirely right.
“Is there no middle ground?” she asked, her voice steady.
The guardian’s voice answered. “The Source is a balance, Selene, but only one aspect can guide your heart. Your actions will define the rest.”
Before she could respond, the two figures merged into one, forming a being that mirrored her exactly. This version of herself stood tall and confident, her eyes glowing with a mix of light and shadow.
“You’re not choosing between light and shadow,” her doppelgänger said, its voice an echo of her own. “You’re choosing who you are. What drives you—mercy or vengeance? Love or hatred? Hope or despair?”
Selene stared at her reflection, her chest tightening. “I don’t want to be defined by one or the other. I’ve lived in fear, in pain, in anger—but I’ve also found love, hope, and strength. Why can’t I be both?”
Her reflection smirked. “Because the world doesn’t work that way. People will see you as one or the other. Your enemies won’t care about your compassion, and your allies won’t forgive your wrath. You must decide what matters most to you.”
She felt a flicker of doubt, but then Kalen’s face flashed in her mind. She thought of her parents, the pack, and everything she had fought for.
“I don’t care how the world sees me,” she said firmly. “I’ll protect what I love, no matter the cost. But I won’t become a monster to do it. I choose balance—I choose to fight for both light and shadow.”
The doppelgänger’s eyes widened, and the figure began to dissolve into streaks of silver and black.
The air around her crackled with energy as the ground beneath her rippled violently. The guardian’s voice returned, louder and more powerful than before.
“Balance is the hardest path to walk, Selene. It requires strength, wisdom, and unwavering resolve. Are you prepared to face the trials that will come with this choice?”
Her mark burned brightly, and she raised her head high. “I am.”
A surge of energy erupted from the ground, engulfing her in a vortex of light and shadow. She felt the Source’s power flowing through her, filling every corner of her being.
When the vortex subsided, Selene stood taller, her eyes glowing with a mixture of silver and black. Her mark had spread, intricate patterns of light and shadow weaving across her skin.
“You have chosen well,” the guardian said. “But remember—balance is not a destination. It is a journey. The Source will guide you, but the path is yours to walk.”
The world shimmered again, and Selene found herself back in the temple. Kalen, Daemon, and Aiden were waiting, their faces a mix of relief and awe as they saw her.
Kalen rushed to her, his hands cupping her face. “Selene… you’re glowing.”
She smiled softly. “I chose balance. I chose us.”
Daemon stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “The Source accepted your choice?”
She nodded. “It did. But this power comes with responsibility. We have to be ready for what’s coming next.”
Aiden frowned. “What do you mean? Isn't it over?”
Before she could answer, the temple trembled, and a low rumble echoed through the air.
“Not yet,” Selene said, her voice steady. “This is just the beginning.”
A sudden burst of energy erupted from the temple’s core, and a fissure appeared in the ground. From the crack, a faint glow emerged, accompanied by a whisper that sent chills down her spine.
“The Source has awakened, but so have its enemies.”
Selene turned to both Kalen and Aiden, her eyes blazing. “We have to prepare. War is coming.”
As the fissure widened, a shadowy figure began to rise, its form cloaked in darkness, its eyes glowing with the same sickly green as the Shadow Warden. She tightened her grip on her power, knowing that their greatest battle was still ahead.
