Whispers of the Future

The forest was alive with whispers as Selene stood at the edge of the pack’s territory, the moonlight casting a silver glow over the trees. The air was thick with the promise of change, and the distant howl that had echoed through the night still lingered in her mind.

Selene closed her eyes, her connection to the Source humming faintly beneath her skin. The guardian’s voice echoed in her thoughts: “The Source has chosen you for a reason. Its true purpose has yet to be revealed.”

She exhaled deeply, steadying herself. The pack had barely recovered from their latest battle, and yet there was no time for rest. Something was coming—something greater than rogue wolves and fractured alliances.

“Selene,” Kalen’s voice broke through her thoughts.

She turned to see him approaching, his golden eyes filled with concern. He was still shirtless from the earlier fight, his skin marred with healing scratches, but his presence was steady, grounding.

“You should rest,” he said, stopping beside her. “You’ve been pushing yourself too hard.”

Selene shook her head, her gaze fixed on the horizon. “I can’t. Not when I know something’s out there, waiting. I can feel it, Kalen.”

He studied her for a moment before nodding. “Then I’ll stay with you.”

For a while, they stood in silence, side by side, watching the forest.

The peaceful moment was interrupted by the arrival of Clara, her expression urgent. “Selene, we’ve got a problem.”

Selene turned, her heart sinking at the sight of her friend’s worry. “What is it?”

“Scouts spotted a group of wolves heading toward the western border. They’re not rogues—at least, not like the ones we’ve fought before. They’re organized, armed.”

Kalen frowned. “Armed? Wolves don’t usually rely on weapons.”

Clara nodded. “Exactly. That’s why it’s concerning. Whoever they are, they’re not here to talk.”

Selene’s mind raced, the weight of leadership settling heavily on her shoulders. “How far are they?”

“A few hours out,” Clara replied. “They’re moving fast.”

Selene glanced at Aiden, who was already shifting into Alpha mode. “We need to prepare,” he said. “If they’re hostile, we can’t afford to be caught off guard.”

The pack gathered in the clearing, their faces a mix of determination and apprehension. Selene stood at the center, her mark glowing faintly in the moonlight.

“We don’t know who these wolves are or what they want,” she began, her voice strong. “But we can’t let them catch us unprepared. This is our home, our family, and we will protect it—together.”

The pack responded with a collective howl, their loyalty to Selene unwavering.

She turned to Clara and Marcus. “I need you two to lead the defensive lines. Keep the younger wolves and the injured safe.”

Clara nodded. “Consider it done.”

Selene then faced Aiden and  Kalen. “We will take the front. If this turns into a fight, we’ll hold the line.”

Their gaze softened, a hint of pride in both their expressions. “We wouldn’t be anywhere else.”

—

The tension in the air was palpable as the pack waited near the western border. The forest was eerily quiet, the usual sounds of wildlife absent.

When the strangers finally appeared, Selene’s breath caught. There were six of them, all wolves, but their appearance was unlike any she had seen before. Their clothing was dark and uniform, their movements precise and coordinated. Each carried a weapon—a mix of blades and bows—and their leader, a tall man with piercing blue eyes, exuded an air of authority.

The leader stepped forward, his gaze sweeping over the assembled pack before settling on Selene. “Who leads this pack?”

Selene stepped forward, her mark glowing faintly. “I do. What do you want?”

The man tilted his head, studying her. “You’re the one they’ve been talking about. The wolf with the mark of the Source.”

Kalen growled low in his throat, stepping closer to Selene. “Who’s been talking?”

The man ignored him, his attention fixed on Selene. “You’ve awakened something ancient, something powerful. But power like that doesn’t come without a cost.”

Her heart raced, but she kept her voice steady. “Who are you? And what do you know about the Source?”

The man smiled faintly, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “We are the Order of Shadows, protectors of balance. The Source is a force older than any pack, older than the moon itself. It was never meant to be wielded by a single wolf.”

Selene straightened, her resolve hardening. “I didn’t choose this. The Source chose me.”

The man’s expression darkened. “And that is the problem. The Source has awakened, and its power is already spreading. If you cannot control it, it will destroy you—and everyone around you.”

The pack bristled at the man’s words, their loyalty to Selene evident in their defensive stances.

“Are you threatening her?” Aiden  demanded, his golden eyes blazing.

The man held up a hand, his tone calm but firm. “This isn’t a threat. It’s a warning. If she loses control, the consequences will be catastrophic. We’ve seen it happen before.”

Selene narrowed her eyes, her instincts screaming that there was more to this man’s story than he was letting on. “What do you want from me?”

The man hesitated, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face. “We want to help you. But if you refuse, we will do what we must to protect the balance—even if it means taking the Source from you by force.”

The tension in the clearing was thick enough to cut with a knife.

“You’ll have to go through me first,” Kalen growled, his body tense.

She placed a hand on his arm, her gaze never leaving the stranger’s. “If you want to help, then prove it. Tell me what I need to do to control this power.”

The man studied her for a long moment before nodding. “There’s a place—a sanctuary where the Source was first created. If you’re willing to go there, you may find the answers you seek.”

Selene’s mind raced as she considered the man’s words. The idea of leaving the pack, of venturing into the unknown, was daunting. But if it meant protecting her family and understanding the power within her, she knew she had no choice.

“Where is this sanctuary?” she asked.

The man’s expression softened slightly, as if he respected her courage. “It’s far from here, beyond the mountains. I can guide you there, but the journey won’t be easy.”

Before Aiden could speeak, Kalen stepped forward, his tone firm. “If she goes, I go too.”

Selene glanced at him, a mixture of gratitude and determination in her eyes. “Then we’ll go together.”

She turned back to the man, her voice steady. “We’ll leave at dawn. But if this is a trap, you’ll regret it.”

The man nodded, a hint of respect in his gaze. “You’re stronger than I expected, Selene. Perhaps you really are the one the Source has been waiting for.”

—

As the pack began to prepare for the journey, Selene stood alone under the stars, the weight of her decision settling over her. The Source pulsed faintly within her, a constant reminder of the power she carried.

In the distance, another howl echoed—a low, mournful sound that sent a chill down her spine.

“Whatever’s waiting for me at that sanctuary,” she whispered, “I’ll face it head-on.”

But as the wind carried the faint scent of blood, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this journey would change everything.

The forest grew silent, and Selene’s mark burned brightly, a warning she couldn’t ignore.

Something, or someone was watching her.
