Chapter 22: Into the Unknown
The first rays of dawn painted the sky in hues of gold and rose as Selene stood at the pack’s edge, her heart heavy with anticipation. The forest seemed unnaturally still, as though holding its breath for what was to come. Around her, the pack moved in subdued silence, preparing for her departure.
Clara stood close, her eyes filled with worry. “Are you sure about this, Selene? These strangers—this ‘Order of Shadows’—they could be leading you into a trap.”
Selene nodded, her resolve firm despite her friend’s concerns. “I don’t have a choice, Clara. If there’s even a chance this sanctuary can help me control the Source, I have to take it. For all of us.”
Clara hesitated before pulling her into a tight hug. “Just… be careful, okay? You’ve been through too much already.”
Selene returned the embrace, grateful for the unwavering support of her closest ally. “I will. Take care of the pack while I’m gone.”
Behind her, Kalen approached, his expression a mix of determination and protectiveness. “Ready?”
She glanced over at the Order’s leader, who waited at the forest’s edge, his expression unreadable. The rest of his group lingered nearby, their weapons sheathed but still within reach.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” she replied, taking one last look at the pack that had become her family.

The group moved swiftly through the forest, guided by the Order’s leader, who had introduced himself as Daemon. The others in his group remained quiet, their eyes constantly scanning their surroundings for any signs of danger.
Selene stayed close to Aiden and Kalen, her senses on high alert. The Source pulsed faintly within her, a reminder of the power she carried—and the responsibility that came with it.
“Do you trust him?” Kalen asked in a low voice, his gaze flicking toward Daemon.
She hesitated before answering. “I don’t know. But if there’s even a chance he’s telling the truth, I have to take it.”
Kalen’s jaw tightened, but he nodded. “Just know that I and Aiden are with you. No matter what.”
Aiden nodded in approval.
She managed a small smile, her heart warmed by their unwavering support.

As the sun climbed higher into the sky, the group reached a rocky ravine that cut through the forest like a jagged scar. Daemon paused, scanning the area before motioning for the group to follow him down a narrow path.
The descent was treacherous, the rocks loose and slick beneath their feet. Selene focused on her footing, her heart pounding as the path grew steeper.
Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the ravine, sending a chill down her spine.
“What was that?” Kalen asked, his body tensing.
Daemon held up a hand, signaling for silence. “We’re not alone. Stay close.”
The growl came again, louder this time, and Selene’s senses flared as the scent of wolves filled the air. But these weren’t ordinary wolves—their scent was wild and feral, tinged with something darker.
The group barely had time to react before the first rogue wolf lunged from the shadows, its eyes glowing with unnatural rage.
Her instincts took over, and she shifted in an instant, her wolf form surging forward to meet the threat. Beside her, Kalen and the others joined the fray, their movements fluid and deadly.
The fight was chaotic, the ravine echoing with the sounds of growls and snapping jaws. Selene fought with everything she had, the Source’s power pulsing faintly within her, sharpening her senses and guiding her movements.
But for every rogue they brought down, two more seemed to take its place.
“They’re endless!” Kalen growled, his voice strained.
Selene’s mind raced as she tried to find a way to turn the tide. The Source pulsed stronger now, as if urging her to tap into its power. But she hesitated, afraid of what might happen if she lost control.
“Selene!” Daemon’s voice cut through the chaos. “You have to use it! It’s the only way!”
She hesitated for only a moment before closing her eyes and reaching for the Source. The power surged through her like a tidal wave, fierce and unrelenting.
With a howl, Selene unleashed the energy, a wave of light erupting from her body and sending the rogues flying. The ravine fell silent, the air heavy with the scent of blood and ash.
She shifted back, her body trembling from the effort. Kalen rushed to her side, his eyes filled with worry.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his hands steadying her.
Selene nodded, though she felt the strain of the power she had unleashed. “I’m fine. But we need to keep moving.”
Daemon approached, his expression unreadable. “You’re stronger than I thought,” he said. “But you’ll need to be even stronger for what lies ahead.”
\---
As the sun began to set, the group finally reached their destination: a massive stone temple carved into the side of a mountain. The structure was ancient, its surface weathered by time but still imposing.
Selene felt a strange pull as they approached, the Source humming faintly within her.
“This is it,” Daemon said, his voice low. “The Sanctuary of the Source.”
The air around the temple was thick with power, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched.
“What now?” Kalen asked, his tone wary.
Daemon gestured toward the temple’s entrance. “Inside lies the heart of the Source. If you can reach it, you may find the answers you seek. But be warned: the path is treacherous, and the Source will test you.”
Selene took a deep breath, her resolve hardening. “I’ve come this far. I’m not turning back now.”
She stepped toward the temple, Aiden and Kalen following close behind her.
As Selene crossed the threshold, a sudden burst of energy enveloped her, pulling her into darkness.
She gasped, disoriented, as whispers filled her mind—faint and indistinct, but carrying a sense of urgency.
“Selene!” Kalen and Aiden both shouted, but she couldn’t see them.
The darkness shifted, forming shapes and figures that seemed to watch her, their presence both eerie and familiar.
And then, a voice rang out, clear and commanding: “Prove yourself, child of the Source. Or be consumed by it.”
Her heart raced as the ground beneath her feet began to crumble, and she realized there was no turning back.
Selene stood alone in the void, her connection to the Source the only thing keeping her grounded. But as the whispers grew louder, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the greatest test was yet to come.
