Impossible Pregnancy

Impossible Pregnancy
Asher's Point of View

Fear is an overwhelming emotion. It freezes your entire being, makes your limbs shake, and grows in your throat with every passing second. I've never experienced such fear as I do now. My shirt and trousers are stained with blood—not Scarlett's from a beating, but something else I can't comprehend. When I reached the spot where she was kidnapped by Scarlynn, I found her lying there, lifeless. A paralyzing fear gripped my soul as I realized she had bled all the way here. With each passing day, that fear tightened around my throat like a vice, making it hard to breathe.

The door to the ward swung open, and two doctors rushed out, their faces etched with worry.

I dashed toward them, my heart pounding against my chest. "Doctor, how's my wife doing?" The words escaped my lips in a rush.

"Your wife is pregnant," the doctor said. I froze at his words, my eyes growing wide with shock and confusion.

"But..." My voice caught in my throat; I couldn't form a complete sentence. How is that even possible?

"I know what you are thinking, but it’s an ectopic pregnancy. This means the fertilized egg has implanted outside the uterus. Her case is even worse because she’s bleeding heavily, which can be life-threatening. We need to operate as soon as possible to terminate the pregnancy before her fallopian tube ruptures."

The doctor's words echoed in my mind, ringing louder than I wished, while I stood frozen like a statue, each muscle in my body weakening.

How unfair life can be to Scarlett. Being a mother is her greatest wish, and now it is being threatened. How will she react to this news?

"Mister Black, we don't have much time. Please go and talk to your wife before we proceed; we need both your permission and hers," the doctor said, snapping me back to the harsh reality I didn't want to face.

I cleared my throat. "Can I go and meet her?" My voice was barely above a whisper. I no longer felt like myself. Convincing Scarlett to terminate the pregnancy would be the hardest task of all. I knew she wouldn’t agree with me, but I would do anything to save her life. I couldn't bear to lose her.

"You have only half an hour," the doctor said, and I nodded.

I dragged my feet into the ward, I found her on the hospital bed, even when she was in a hospital gown, she was still bleeding, blood all over the small hospital bed.
A painful lump formed in my throat as her teary eyes locked with mine.

I pulled the small chair, sitting next to the bed, I held her hand in mine, which was trembling. “Sweetheart, how are you feeling?” This sounded like the most stupid question I've ever asked anyone; she was wincing in pain, bleeding her life away, and I'm asking such a question, but for the first time, I don't know what to say.

“Asher, we are going to be parents.” Her face twisted in another wince, squinting her eyes shut, trying hard to bear with the pain. “I'm so happy.” She fluttered her eyes open, a smile stretching on her lips, I've never seen so many reactions on her face before.

My eyelid burned with unshed tears. I couldn't let out right now, but seeing her so happy and in pain at the same time was shattering my heart. It felt as though someone was putting millions of needles in my heart, and with each heartbeat, the pain was too unbearable.

“Scarlett, your life is in danger, and if you keep this child, you'd...” Scarlett didn't let me finish my sentence; her eyes were on mine.

“Asher, my life is not in danger, but I'm pregnant with our child. Do you know, I already thought of a name, we'd name her little Asherly, and our family will be completed. Isn't this exciting news?” She let out a chuckle, her eyes twinkling with happiness, but it couldn't hide the pain hidden beneath that happiness.

Heaviness snuggled up in my chest, I sucked in a sharp breath trying to keep my emotions under control. “Scarlett, you have to undergo surgery to terminate this pregnancy as soon as possible, or else you are going to lose your life, and if you die, I won't be able to live without you. I'd kill myself, and then who will take care of this baby?” I asked, blinking back my tears.

How I wish I didn't have to say this, I wished we could celebrate this moment and be excited about our little one, but it's such a pity that our happiness was short-lived, not given a chance to be celebrated. The proof of our love was going to be flushed away just like that.

Scarlett pulled her hand away from mine, more tears streamed down her cheeks, her eyes were red and puffy.

“What's wrong with you, Asher?” Her voice cracked with emotions. “It's our baby, how can it cause danger to me, and even if it does, I'm not going to kill my little Asherly even if I die, I don't care. I'm not killing my baby, and my decision is final.” She looked away from me, her arms now wrapped around her tummy.

“Baby, mommy won't let you go anywhere, okay, I won't allow anyone to take you away from me.” She whispered, her voice trembling, swallowing her sobs that threatened to burst out of her throat.

A dull ache spread through my chest as my eyes were locked on hers, I felt warm tears welling up in my eyes, but I blinked them back. I can't break down right now, but seeing her in such a condition was too much to bear. She won't agree to this, and the only choice I had was to have it done without her permission because I'm not ready to lose her because of the baby that will never survive no matter what happens. I'd choose her over being a father because even if that baby were to survive, I'd never love it knowing that she's the reason why I lost the woman I loved.

“Asher, I'm not going to kill my child, and if you decide to do it without my permission, just know it's over between us because I will never forgive you for taking this joy away from me.”

I feel like time has stopped as I let Scarlett’s words sink in my head; it was like she was reading my mind, but I'd rather let her hate me than to lose her. I can't lose her no matter what happens.

“My love for you is selfish, Scarlett, because I'm not ready to lose you no matter what happens, even if you decide to hate me, I won't mind, as long as I get to see you all the time.” The tears I've been trying to hold streamed down my cheeks, Scarlett turned to me glaring at me now.

“If you've ever loved me for once in your life, then you are not going to kill my child.” I froze on the chair, my heart shattering into millions of pieces.
