Chapter 37
Chapter 37
"You stand to gain a lot from Queen Lyssa's offer. Knowledge, weapons, a chance to crush your enemies. . ."
“I don't have the time to honour the invite. I have enough to handle,” I said. "Tell her I said to thank her, but I can't come."
He stood and bowed. “As you wish.”
Then he tucked the device away and strode out.
Caius slammed his fist on the table and glared at me. “You’re throwing away an alliance. Their tech could end the witch's reign of terror and save our troops. What are you doing?”Ronan
I'm doing what's best for the kingdom.
My blood boiled. I knew this was coming, but I didn't expect him to disrespect me before Darius.
"How dare you question me?” I grabbed my axe and closed the gap between us.
"My Lord. . ." Darius stood up to ease the tension.
"Shut up and let him answer me."
"Well, I'm one of your advisers," Caius said.
"That wasn't an advice. You disrespected me. You think I’m weak, huh?”
You think I don't know what to do.
His eyes flicked to the axe but his chin lifted defiantly. “You’re acting weak. You are hiding here, obsessing over that human girl while the witch schemes another grand attack. You’re failing.”
And it's not making any sense.
I know your still in love with Lila and it's getting into your head.
My vision went all red. I lunged with my axe. He tried to duck, but I got him. I pressing it against his neck. The blade’s energy crackled against his skin. His glowing eyes widened, but he didn’t flinch.
“Apologize or I take your head off,” I growled. My heart was beating fast.
Darius held my hand. “My lord, please. Caius, apologize, you fool."
There was a moment of awkward silence, then Caius’s jaw clenched. “I apologize, my lord.”
I'm very sorry, it won't repeat itself.
I held the axe there. “Last warning. Cross me again, you’re done for.
I lowered the axe, chest heaving. Caius stepped back and rubbed his neck. Darius exhaled. He looked like he had just seen a ghost.
“Everyone out,” I growled. They both left and Caius slammed the door behind him.
My axe clattered to the table and I exhaled into my palms. Caius was right about one thing. I was distracted. Lila was in my head, twisting my thoughts, weakening me.
I wasn't thinking straight, I wasn't doing the right thing.
The door creaked and Vera stepped in. “My lord.”
“Get out! I want to be alone!" I snapped.
She didn’t move. “Please, listen.”
"What?”
“It's Lila. She’s planning something.”
What do you mean by that.
My stomach dropped. “What did you see?”
“She was writing something, hid it when I came in.
I wasn't able to see the whole piece but she was with a pen and a paper and would hide it whenever I came too close.
I could tell her eyes were guilty. I can tell she’s scheming.”
I tried to look unbothered, but I couldn't pull it off.
“Keep watching her. Report every strange move.”
“Yes, my lord.”
She left, and I stood there, heart pounding. Lila was a fire I couldn’t extinguish, a thorn in the flesh , burning through my control. I needed to put an end to this madness.
What is really wrong with Lila. Why can't she just be the good girl she has always been.
I honestly can't even think about what she planning this time around?.
An escape ?
She should better not. Unless she wants to see the other side of me.
I believe she won't like it at all.
Lila’s POV
I arrived at the Northern training yard to see a group of archers standing in rows, gripping their fancy four-arrow superbows.
Seraphine was behind them I could see her.
She looked like a female alpha, barking instructions.
It was so nice watching her. I had a wonderful show.
She spotted me and snapped her fingers. A huge undead soldier stepped up to take over.
She walked to my direction.
Seraphine marched over and stood in front of me. "I was just wrapping up the training session."
Yh I could see that.
Your doing grate I must commend.
“Do you do this all the time.?
Yes for the mean time, I'm the commander in charge.
If I'm not there someone else does it.
I nodded.
“So yu’re bored, huh?” she stared at me.
"Yes. I’m going nuts just sitting around. Lord Ronan says you'll fix me somewhere."
She pursed her lips. “Let's see where you'll fit In.
Please Come with me.”
I followed her while looking around the training yard. The letter I penned to Caius was tucked in my sleeve and it rubbed against my wrist as I moved.
We went through a long dark hall that stretched out until I asked where we were going.
"The place where you'll get busy." She replied.
We finally arrived at glad complex. Seraphine took me on a tour through the units. I saw shiny walls and flashing screens.
Drones buzzed above with red lights blinking.
Undead soldiers wielded glowing blades and electric spears while facing robots. My stomach knotted.
This place was built for war. I didn't want any part of it.
She showed me a list of options. "What unit do you want?”
"Drone controls,” I said. Plainly.
“Good pick. Let’s go.”
She led the way to the drone unit. I struggled to keep pace with her quick steps in my heels.
My heart pounded as I thought about the letter. I had to find Caius quickly and get it to him. I wouldn't trust that letter with someone else. Even with Caius, it was a big risk as well.
I needed to act fast.
“Seraphine, we need to talk.” Someone called behind us. The voice sounded familiar.
I turned around and saw General Darius. Seraphine waited for him to catch up while
I stepped back, pretending to check out a screen with drones sweeping around. But I listened hard and managed to hear them talk.
“Ronan and Caius were at each other's necks today.
It was ugly. Ronan had his blade on Caius' neck."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah, it’s getting out of hand. We gotta do something.”
"Like what?"
"I don't know we just need to make sure there's peace between them."
It's not going to work.
Cauis is his advisor they are bound to have issues, especially when Ronan is not comfortable with the whole thing.
I tried to separate them both but Ronan was really angry.
"My job is to train, not teach the king and his general to be buddies or close friends.
They know what they're doing.
I hate mending into issues, not minding my business but trust me you'll get to know a whole lot of things.
"What if we try talk to Caius. Get him to chill or something “.
“Are you been serious ,hell no.”
“I’m not doing that.”
