The Beginning of Power
Sultan stood across from Leandra, watching her closely as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. His gaze softened slightly, but the intensity in his posture remained. He was always composed, always in control. As the Alpha of the most substantial pack in America and with distant ties to the Lycan royal family, Sultan had been raised to command respect and navigate power. It was second nature to him now. He expected loyalty and obedience—he had earned that. His word was law, and anyone who challenged him would quickly learn why his pack was feared and revered across the country.
But Leandra was different.
She had a strength that went beyond what anyone else saw. A fire that burned deep inside her, and it wasn't just her magic. It was her spirit—her refusal to back down, her willingness to challenge him even when she was out of her depth. Sultan liked that about her. No, he needed that in a mate. She was feisty and fierce, and Sultan knew she would match him in ways that no one else ever could once she came into her own. But he also saw her softer side, The part of her that was nurturing and compassionate, the part that would make her a natural Luna—one who could balance his power with her wisdom.
It was a rare combination, and it was why he had no doubts that she was meant for this. Leandra was meant for him.
"Feel the air around you," Sultan said, his voice low but steady, cutting through her frustration. "Your magic is tied to your emotions. Start there. Focus on what you're feeling inside—the energy that's been building since we met."
Leandra's brow furrowed, her breathing steady but tense. Sultan could sense her frustration bubbling beneath the surface, and his wolf growled softly in his mind, urging her to let go. She was close; he could feel it, but she was holding back, unsure of what to do with the power starting to stir inside her.
He watched her shoulders stiffen, her fists clenching slightly as she tried to focus. But she was still fighting it, trying to force something that needed to come naturally. Sultan's wolf prowled restlessly, eager to see her unleash that raw power, but Sultan kept his own control in check. He wasn't going to rush this.
"I don't feel anything," Leandra muttered after a moment, her voice laced with irritation. "How am I supposed to control something I don't understand?"
Sultan crossed his arms over his chest, his stance solid and unyielding. "You're trying too hard. Power doesn't come from force. It comes from letting go."
Her eyes snapped open, glaring at him with a spark of defiance. "Let go? You're telling me to let go when I don't know what I'm doing?"
Sultan met her glare with a steady gaze, unphased by her outburst. He liked her fire—it reminded him that she wouldn't crumble under pressure. But she needed to learn control, and that was something he could teach her. "Yes," he said calmly. "You're overthinking it. You're afraid of losing control, so you're holding back. But that's the problem. You won't access your true power until you stop trying to control it and let it flow through you."
Leandra's jaw tightened, and she crossed her arms over her chest, mirroring his stance. She wasn't backing down. "That's easy for you to say. You've had your whole life to learn how to control your... whatever this is. I just found out yesterday that I'm some magical hybrid. So forgive me if I'm not exactly comfortable with 'letting go.'"
Sultan's gaze didn't waver. He stepped closer, his presence looming over her, but there was no threat in his movement—only command. "I wasn't always in control. It took years of discipline to harness my power. But I had to learn the same lesson you're learning now. Power isn't about control. It's about balance. You have to trust yourself."
Leandra's eyes narrowed, but there was a flicker of something else beneath her frustration. She didn't like being told what to do—especially not by someone she barely knew—but Sultan could sense the shift in her. She was listening.
"Fine," she muttered, her voice sharp. "Let's try again."
Sultan stepped back, giving her the space she needed, his gaze never leaving her. He watched as she closed her eyes, her breathing steadying once more. This time, there was a difference in her posture. She wasn't as tense. Her hands relaxed at her sides, and he could feel the subtle shift in her energy as she reached for the power that lay dormant inside her.
For a long moment, there was silence between them. The air around them seemed to still, the gentle rustling of the trees fading into the background. And then, Sultan felt a faint pulse of energy rippling through the air, coming from Leandra. It was raw, unrefined, but it was there.
Her eyes snapped open wide with surprise. "I felt something."
Sultan nodded, a small smile of approval tugging at the corners of his lips. "Good. That's your magic. Now, hold onto that feeling. Don't force it—let it flow."
Leandra's expression shifted from surprise to determination, her eyes closing again as she focused. The energy around them grew more vigorous, swirling in the air like static electricity. Sultan watched as her breathing deepened, her connection to the magic inside her becoming more pronounced.
"You're doing it," he said, his voice low but full of pride. "Now reach deeper."
Leandra's brow furrowed in concentration, and Sultan could feel the power inside her building and rising with every breath she took. And then, without warning, the magic erupted from her like a storm, sending a shockwave of energy rippling through the clearing. The force of it rattled the trees, stirring the air around them.
Sultan didn't flinch. He stood his ground, the power washing over him as his energy flared in response. His wolf growled approvingly, eager to see her tap into that strength again. But he could see the shock in her eyes, the way she staggered back as the power ebbed away.
"I—" Leandra gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "I didn't mean to—"
"I know," Sultan said, stepping toward her. His voice was calm, but it had an edge of excitement. "But that's why we're here, to learn. Your magic is raw right now, but it's there. Based on what magic you just elicited, I would say that you're a fairy hybrid."
Leandra stared at him, eyes wide, her breathing still shaky. "That was... a lot. I wasn't expecting it to be so intense, and I was expecting to be a fairy. Woooow," she said breathily.
Sultan nodded, his eyes narrowing slightly. "It will always be intense at first. But that's what we're working on. Your power is like a wild animal—unpredictable and dangerous. But with time, you'll learn how to shape and use it without losing control."
Leandra met his gaze, her hands trembling slightly. "What if I can't? What if it's too much for me?"
Sultan's expression hardened, but there was no harshness in his voice. Only determination. "You will because you have to. There's no other option, Leandra. The power inside you is a part of who you are. You can't run from it, and you can't deny it. But you don't have to do this alone. I'm here to help you."
Leandra's eyes searched his, uncertainty still flickering in her gaze. "You think I can do this. Why are you so sure?"
Sultan took another step closer, his voice lowering, his eyes intense. "Because I've seen strength in you from the moment we met. It's in facing challenges head-on, even when you're scared. You don't back down. And that's why you'll succeed. You're not just strong—you're meant for this. Meant for me."
Leandra's breath caught in her throat, the intensity of his words hitting her harder than she had expected. There was something about the way he looked at her, the way he spoke with such certainty, that made her believe him. Even if she didn't fully understand everything yet, a part of her knew he was right.
But she wasn't about to let him off that easily.
"You keep saying I'm meant for this, but you still haven't told me why," she said, her voice challenging. "Why am I so important? You said I'm a fairy hybrid, but what does that really mean? Why is my magic so different?".
Sultan's gaze softened slightly, though his expression remained serious. "Hybrids like you are rare. Your magic isn't just human—it's fae or possibly even something older. That kind of magic is more powerful than any one species alone. And that makes you a target. The factions in the supernatural world know that someone like you can tip the balance of power. And they'll either want to control you or eliminate you."
Leandra's eyes widened, her pulse quickening. "But why me? I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't even know magic existed until now. So why am I suddenly at the center of some supernatural war?"
