The Bond

Two days had passed by now, and with a heavy sigh, Leandra forced herself to sit up. She realized she couldn't hit lay and wallow in her thoughts, or she would go crazy. She glanced at her phone on the nightstand, half-expecting another message from Sultan. But the screen remained dark, and for a moment, she wasn't sure if she was relieved or disappointed.

She needed to clear her head, to think. But every time she tried to focus, her thoughts circled back to him and everything he told her.

Sultan had offered her protection, but she still didn't know who or what she was. What had he meant by *hybrid*? What kind of power did she have? And why was she suddenly a target?

Her mind was spinning, and she needed answers. She couldn't keep running from this, couldn't keep pretending that everything was fine. It wasn't acceptable. And as much as she wanted to cling to her old life, she knew that it was slipping away, piece by piece.

With a determined breath, Leandra reached for her phone and opened her messages. She stared at Sultan's last text for a moment, her thumb hovering over the screen. She had questions, and only he could answer them. But how was she supposed to approach him after everything that had happened? How was she supposed to trust him when she barely knew him?

She had questions—too many to count—and their weight was suffocating.

She shook her head and began to type out a message to him.

Leandra:

We need to talk.

She hit send before she could second-guess herself. A few seconds passed, and then her phone buzzed with a response.

Sultan:

I'll be there soon.

Her stomach twisted, a mixture of anticipation and anxiety knotting inside her. She didn't know if she was ready to face Sultan again, didn't know if she could handle whatever truths he had to reveal. But one thing was sure: she couldn't go on like this. She needed to understand what was happening to her, and Sultan was the only one who could give her the answers she so desperately needed.

POV: Sultan

Sultan's hands gripped the steering wheel tightly as he navigated the winding roads leading into the city. His heart thrummed with a mixture of anticipation and concern. Leandra had reached out to him—that was a good sign—but he could sense the turmoil in her words. She still struggled to accept the truth, and he couldn't blame her. Her entire world had been flipped upside down, and she was caught in the middle of something much more significant than she could comprehend.

He had wanted to stay away and give her time and space to process everything, but now that she had reached out, his wolf growled in triumph. She needed him. She might not realize it yet, but she did. His wolf had been restless the past two days, pacing and pushing at the boundaries of Sultan's control, eager to be near her again. The bond between them was growing, strengthening with each passing day, and the need to protect her—to be with her—was becoming overwhelming.

"She called for us," his wolf growled, satisfaction lacing its voice. "She feels it, too."

Sultan nodded, his thoughts mirroring the beast's instincts. "Yes. She's starting to accept it. But we need to be careful. She's still scared, still unsure. "

The wolf huffed but didn't argue. It knew Leandra was delicate at that moment and that pushing too much too soon could shatter the fragile trust she was beginning to extend to them.

The city came into view, the tall buildings looming on the horizon. Sultan's pulse quickened as he neared Leandra's neighborhood, the pull toward her growing stronger with every mile. He could feel her energy, uncertainty, and a flicker of something else—something that sent a surge of hope through his chest.

She was beginning to understand.

He parked his car a short distance from her house, carefully staying out of view. He didn't want to overwhelm her with his presence, not yet. Instead, he approached her front door quietly, his heightened senses alert to everything around him. The air felt heavy, almost thick, with the anticipation of what was to come.

Sultan knocked gently on her door, his heartbeat steady but strong. A few moments later passed before he heard soft footsteps from inside. The door creaked open, revealing Leandra standing there. Her expression was conflicted, but her eyes were searching his. Their bond thrummed with life when their eyes met, pulling them together, even though she stood at a distance.

"Leandra, Thank you for reaching out," he said softly but firmly, his voice calm and soothing.

She nodded, her fingers tightening on the doorframe as though she was holding on for support. "I couldn't stop thinking about everything you said. I have so many questions. I don't know even know where to begin."

"You can ask me anything. I'm here to help you through this. You're not alone in this, Leandra." Said Sultan.

She hesitated momentarily, then stepped back, opening the door wider. "Come in."

Sultan crossed the threshold, careful to keep his movements slow and nonthreatening. He could feel her nervousness even though she was putting on a solid front, the way her energy flickered with uncertainty, but he could also feel the pull between them—more vital now than it had been before.

They moved into the living room, the air between them thick with unspoken tension. Leandra gestured for him to sit, and he sat on the edge of the couch, his eyes never leaving hers. She sat across from him, her hands folded in her lap, her brow furrowed as she tried to gather her thoughts.

Sultan leaned forward slightly, his tone gentle. "Start with whatever's on your mind. There's no rush."

Leandra took a deep breath and laughed nervously. "You said I'm not human. Or not fully. What did you mean by that?"

Sultan's gaze darkened slightly, but his expression remained calm. "You're a hybrid, Leandra. Part human, yes. But part something else. Something powerful."

She swallowed hard, her throat dry. "That isn't quite specific; better yet, what am I?"

Sultan paused for a moment, choosing his words carefully. "I don't know the full extent of your heritage yet. But I can sense it. You have magic in you, ancient and strong. It's been dormant, hidden away, but it's starting to awaken. That's why you've felt different your whole life, why strange things happen around you."

Leandra's eyes widened slightly, her mind racing. "Magic? You think I have magic?"

Sultan nodded, his gaze steady.

She stared at him, her mind spinning with this information: Magic. She had always felt like there was something different about her, something she couldn't explain, but this... this was something else entirely.

"But why now?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why is it happening now?"

Sultan's eyes softened. "Because we've met. The bond between us is awakening your true nature. It's tied to who you are, to what we are."

Leandra's breath hitched. "The bond. You mean the mate thing?"

Sultan nodded, his gaze intense. "Yes. You're my mate, Leandra. That bond between us—it's real. It's powerful. And it's what's bringing your powers to start manifesting."

Now, Sultan was telling her it was so much more—that she was part of a world she never knew existed. And the bond between them, this mate bond, was responsible for awakening something inside her. Something dangerous. Something powerful.

She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. Her hands were clenched in her lap, her knuckles white. She didn't know how to process any of this. But she couldn't run from it anymore. It was time for her to accept what was happening and what she wanted to do about it. With the new resolution, she continued to ask Sultan questions.
