CHAPTER NINE

LUCIAN'S P.O.V

"Why would you ask that?" I growled.

He looked at me with a face of innocence.
"What? Isn't it a good idea for her to stay with you in the pack house?"

"Of course it is and you know it." I grumbled.

"Then what is it?"

"I should be the one asking her that question, not you. I'm her mate "

"Whoa, whoa! Guys, calm down! I'm the one on the bed!" Aurora called out, annoyance in her voice.

"Sorry." I mumbled. "But would you like to come stay in the pack house...with me?"

She stared at me for a while then slowly shook her head, my heart sank.
"I would rather stay with Talia in her house. Thanks for the offer but no offense."

"You tried men. She has decided." Kieran butted in again.

"Dude, I swear to the goddess, you make another comment, I'm going to punch you." I growled.

He only chuckled and waved at Aurora.
"See you later, and get well."

"Thank you." She called out as he left.

I was left frowning as she seemed to have forgotten me.

"Lucian?"

"Yeah? What is it? Are you feeling uncomfortable or..."

"No, I'm fine." She frowned then flicked her eyes to the door. "I think its time you go."

My face fell but I said nothing.
"Fine." I stood up, my hands in my pocket to keep me from touching her face.
"I guess I'll see you later?"

"No. You know you can't. Stay away."

I shook my head stubbornly.
"You know I won't listen to you. Besides, I'm your alpha, you have to do what I say."

She glared at me, "Don't you dare!"

"Bye." I winked and left with a brief smile.

Back at tge pack house, it was quiet when I walked in, I headed up to my room when I heard my dad calling me.

"Stop there boy."

I sighed and turned. He stood at the door of his office, a cigarette in his mouth as he watched me carefully.

"You and I have unfinished business."

"The only business we have is me killing you for laying your filthy hands on my mother."

He growled, his growl laced with his alpha power to make me submit. But I resisted with a growl of my own. His eyes widened in surprise, then he chuckled.

"I see, you have grown strong enough to resist me. That's why you think you can fight with your father and get away with it."

I laughed dryly.
"I just saved my mom from your hands, from a man trying to kill her. Who calls himself my father and her husband. And yet you are angry at me? For protecting my mom?"

He looked away, smoke coming out of his nostrils.

"Why do you do this? Tell me one good reason why you hate mom? Isn't she your mate? Aren't you supposed to love her!" I was in front of him at this point.

"You want to know why?" He blew out a puff of smoke from his mouth. "You really want to know why I hate your mother?"

"Tell me."

He took a deep whiff of the cigarette then crushed the rest under his shoe.

"Your mother....was never my mate."

It felt like I just misheard him. I felt my ears ringing.

"What did you say?"

"You heard me right, your mom is not my mate. She was never my mate."

I stayed silent, he continued, his eyes cold but holding a bit of sadness I've never seen in him before.

"I had a mate..." He swallowed, his hands trembled. "...she...she was killed. I held her dying body in my hands. I had no choice but to marry your mother because she was the only one suitable."

My mouth opened and closed a few time. I had to swallow down the lump stuck in my throat before I could say anything. I could understand his pain a bit, if anything happened to Aurora or she was taken away from me. I had no idea what I would do.

"I get that you are sad that you lost your mate...but...taking it out on mom....is too brutal."

He laughed, a souless laughter that had him tipping his head backwards. He sounded so mechanical.

"You should ask her how my mate died."

Those were the last words he said before turning back into his office and shutting the door loudly.

I stood there dumbfounded and confused at what to do. He said I should ask mom, what did he mean. I shook my head, it was night time already. There was no way I could sleep now. I needed answers, immediately. So I quickly headed to her room, but asI raised my hand to knock, I stopped. She might still be asleep.

"No, let's do it tomorrow."

I could wait.

I had a busy day immediately I woke up because Dad ended up dead drunk. Which meant he couldn't do anything, so I wasn't able to go see mom. It took a while, but I was finally done with my duties, especially, the meeting with the pack elders. I headed for mom's room. The whole time I had been at the pack hall, my mind had been on the questions I had for mom. The more I tried to get my mind off it, the more I wanted to know the answers.

With my hand on my forehead, I knocked on mom's door.

"Mom, its me."
"Come in, its open."

I opened the door, the room smelled of coconut and strawberries. She was sitting up on the bed, a book on her hands.

"Lucian, how are you?" She smiled cheerfully at me. My heart sank at the question I was about to ask.

"I'm fine mom, I can see you're getting better."

"Oh I'm already better." She grinned.

"Um..mom...I don't know how to ask this but...is it true you and dad aren't truly mates?"

Her face went pale as she gasped.

"And...what happened to his mate?"

She placed a frail hand on her throat and swallowed with difficulty.

"How did you find out?"

"He told me." My voice came out soft.

She looked away with a faraway look, her eyes going misty as she squeezed her hands together.

"Yes...its true "
My breath hitched. She continued, not looking at me.

"I wasn't his true mate. His true mate....was actually....was actually my sister and...I killed her."
