Chapter 144: Hear Nothing
Jared watched the video, barely able to contain his excitement.
"The Hughes family's faces when they see this video are going to be absolutely priceless! I can't wait!"
The video was thoughtfully shot to capture each worker's face, and everything they said was recorded too.
If the Hughes family didn't want things to blow up with the Windsor family so soon, they'd probably choose to pay up.
"Boss, you really don't hold back when it comes to blackmail. Three hundred million dollars - even if the Hughes family pays, it'll take them forever to earn it back. I bet they won't give it up so easily."
The Hughes family's business chain had been having problems lately, so they didn't have much cash on hand.
The more Jared thought about it, the more he realized Catherine was really ruthless!
But Catherine had even scammed Alexander. He'd heard that all the equipment for Moon Laboratory was sent by Alexander. Suddenly, Jared felt a deep respect for Catherine!
Look at that - for the organization's future, Catherine was really working hard!
Catherine said calmly, "They'll pay. Compared to offending both Faceless Ones and the Windsor family, a mere three hundred million dollars is a bargain."
Hearing this, Jared was almost moved. What an honest deal! If the Windsor family missed this opportunity, they'd never get such a good price again!
Jared agreed and sent the video to the Hughes family that very night.
The next morning, after getting ready and heading downstairs, she looked up to see the living room packed with gifts.
Boxes of all sizes filled the living room, leaving barely any space to walk.
Expensive nutritional supplements were stacked box by box. At the front was a box of pearls the size of fists - they looked like the ones auctioned at last year's auction.
When Aurora saw Catherine coming downstairs, her face was beaming with joy.
"Sweetheart, take a look and see what you like. Pick something and I'll have someone send it up to your room."
"Why are there so many things?"
"They say the Hughes family sent them over as an apology. Probably because of Michael making a scene at the gallery yesterday?"
Thinking about yesterday, Aurora felt Michael was somewhat disgraceful.
But since the Hughes family had sent so many gifts to apologize the very next day, and the two families had many business dealings together, it was best if both sides could take a step back.
Marcus sat at the dining table reading the newspaper, his scrutinizing gaze falling on the pile of gifts.
"All these gifts just for yesterday's incident? The current head of the Hughes family has some sense at least."
Marcus had a sharp eye.
He could tell at a glance that based on yesterday's events, today's gifts were excessive.
The Hughes family could easily have called it kids' roughhousing, just sparring with each other. Even if they wanted to send gifts, they didn't need to send this many.
"There's probably something else going on. Have Bethany look into it."
Aurora smiled, "Dad, you're probably overthinking it. Bethany already investigated yesterday - there's nothing else."
Catherine's gaze swept over the pile of gifts before her.
The Hughes family was probably reacting to last night's video, trying to get ahead of things.
They were testing the Windsor family now.
If the Windsor family knew about that incident, these gifts wouldn't just be refused at the door - they'd be thrown right back in the Hughes family's faces.
Since they were accepted, it proved the Windsor family really didn't know yet.
"Mom, I'm heading to the gallery."
"Don't work too hard. I know you're excellent, but don't wear yourself out, okay?"
Aurora looked at Catherine with pure delight.
Catherine was just too amazing!
Yesterday when she went to play cards, all her friends looked at her with envy. Whose son or daughter was this outstanding? Hers!
Catherine nodded, left the house, and walked straight to the car parked at the door, pulling open the door and getting in.
Jared said while eating a sandwich, "Boss, the Hughes family has agreed to pay, but they want to meet us in person. They say they want to hand it over face to face."
Hand over the money in person?
More like deal with them in person.
With such a big piece of evidence in Faceless Ones' hands, the Hughes family couldn't be sure when Faceless Ones might hand the video over to the Windsor family.
What if Faceless Ones just wanted to make money from both sides? The Hughes family would just have to swallow that bitter pill!
Jared said disdainfully, "I think making friends is just an excuse. First, they want to recruit us to work for them. Second, they want to threaten us. The Hughes family is really bad."
"Boss, should we meet them?"
Catherine's expression was cold. "No. Tell them if they try any tricks, it'll be five hundred million dollars. One cent less and the video goes to the Windsor family, along with some extra parts the Hughes family hasn't seen yet."
Jared smiled.
If the Hughes family thought they could threaten Catherine over this, they were really hitting a brick wall.
When Faceless Ones was scamming and deceiving... no, fighting for justice internationally, the Hughes family was still only focused on petty gains right in front of them!
If they wanted to play games with them, they were way out of their league!
"Boss, are you going to the gallery today?"
"First to a bank."
Everything Elodie left her was in that bank. She had to go see it.
Whatever Elodie had left behind, she would take good care of it all.
The bank Elodie chose was a large international bank.
It happened to be Evergreen Bank under the Windsor family, and the safe deposit box was located right in Imperia City.
When had Elodie come to Imperia City to store things? How did she not know about this at all?
It must have been when she was out on missions with Faceless Ones, not by Elodie's side.
Jared parked the car in front of Evergreen Bank. Just as Catherine was about to get out, the car door was opened from outside.
Michael's face wore a smile, but his eyes were full of scrutiny toward Catherine.
"Catherine, we meet again. Looks like we're quite fated."
Catherine's gaze fell on Michael's face.
The mark of five fingers - even with medicine applied and deliberate ice treatment, it was still quite visible.
This slap must have been pretty hard.
"Didn't you look in the mirror before leaving the house? That face might scare people outside - seems a bit inappropriate."
The smile on Michael's face froze!
He'd gotten slapped as soon as he got home yesterday, a solid hit right on the face. It took a whole night of ice treatment to mostly heal!
How did Catherine figure it out so quickly?
Even if she figured it out, saying it out loud in front of so many people without giving him any face!
"Are you always this direct?"
Catherine said flatly, "With your intelligence, I'm worried you won't understand if I'm not direct."
Michael couldn't smile anymore.
But thinking about how establishing a close relationship with Catherine would bring him endless benefits - in the future, whether it was the Hughes family or the Windsor family, they'd all be his!
Just thinking about such enormous wealth made Michael's heart burn with excitement.
"Catherine, meeting like this is fate. Want to have dinner together?"
Catherine frowned at Michael in front of her.
"Are all the Hughes family this shameless? Or are you especially shameless, unable to understand a single word?"
"I told you to get lost. Can't you hear me?"
