Chapter 143 Waiting for Death
Catherine walked to the corner of the staircase and suddenly heard strange noises coming from the basement warehouse.
She frowned slightly and said softly, "Alexander, wait for me a moment."
"I can wait as long as you need."
As long as it would make Catherine like him, what did waiting matter?
Catherine was momentarily speechless, feeling that Alexander's words had some other meaning!
She locked her phone screen, put it in her suit pocket, and walked toward the basement where materials were stored.
The gallery staff had all left for the day, but there were still several people in blue worker uniforms in the warehouse.
Catherine glanced around the warehouse, crouched down, stepped onto the construction pipes on the ceiling, and squatted above the workers to look down.
"Hurry up, add that stuff to the paint over there too."
"If we add these things, won't they be discovered?"
"Impossible!" The leader was quite confident.
"This stuff is colorless and odorless. Once we add it, it'll guarantee that these painters get poisoned while painting. Then the gallery will be in big trouble! Who told Catherine not to cooperate and insist on going against the Hughes family? She made such a big scene today that the Hughes family's gallery has become a joke!"
The workers mixed the powder in their hands with the paint and added the prepared toxic paint blocks to the original paint.
"Is Catherine still in her office?"
"I saw the lights upstairs are already off, so she's probably left."
The lead worker took out a needle-sized vial from his pocket, his face full of malice.
"Inject this into her office water dispenser. Once she drinks the water, there's no saving her!"
The other workers hadn't expected they would actually harm Catherine and panicked.
"Even if you want to get revenge for Jennifer, you can't hurt Catherine. What if the Windsor family comes after us?"
That was the Windsor family's daughter. If something really happened, even ten lives wouldn't be enough to pay for it!
The worker gritted his teeth viciously: "Don't worry, the Hughes family will definitely protect us."
Who told that Catherine to be so heartless? Jennifer just took a little money, which was nothing to the Windsor family.
She insisted on sending Jennifer to prison, so don't blame him for not being polite!
Catherine calmly watched the workers before her.
Her gaze swept across the surveillance cameras in the warehouse. As expected, they were all turned off. All the cameras that should have had red lights on were completely dark.
It seemed these workers had come prepared.
After dealing with the paint, the workers looked at the materials piled on the other side.
"What about those materials over there?"
"Leave them. The raw materials we provided them earlier all have problems. Within three days, most of the exhibition halls here will collapse. Best if it happens during the day when they're open and crushes a few customers to death - that would be interesting!"
They had it all planned out. As long as the materials here had problems and the exhibition collapsed and killed people, even if the Windsor family stepped in, it would be too late. This gallery would definitely have to close.
Let's see what they'll use to compete with the Hughes family then!
"Catherine is just a woman who came back from the countryside. Does she really think she understands art? When something happens, let's see how she deals with it!"
"When the gallery has problems, they'll know that giving the gallery to Catherine was wrong. There's nothing the Hughes family wants to do that they can't accomplish!"
The workers gritted their teeth. After checking the warehouse and tampering with everything they could, they finally left reluctantly.
Catherine watched them leave through the back door, her gaze growing darker.
She recognized these workers. They were from the construction team Jennifer had contacted. Over the years, they had made plenty of money following Jennifer, all swindled from the gallery.
Now that she had sent Jennifer away, these workers had lost their cash cow and teamed up with the Hughes family to get revenge on her?
Murder and robbery - they didn't miss a single crime.
Catherine touched her earlobe. The earring listening device that Sophia had tested last time worked well. She had just added a camera function, which was enough to capture everything that just happened.
The warehouse was silent. Only then did Catherine come down from the ceiling, dusted herself off, and left the gallery.
As soon as she walked out of the gallery, Alexander was standing in front of her holding an umbrella.
"It's raining. What were you doing just now?"
"Handling a small matter."
This was Alexander's first time seeing Catherine in professional attire. The well-tailored cropped pants revealed her slender ankles, and the high heels on her feet were sophisticated and elegant, adding a touch of sexiness to her usual cool demeanor.
After dinner, Alexander drove Catherine to the entrance of The Windsor Mansion, looking at her with some reluctance.
"I regret not seeing you paint today."
But he had already saved the video and set it as his animated phone wallpaper, so he could see her different side whenever he picked up his phone.
Alexander stepped forward and gently hugged Catherine, placing a kiss on her forehead that was gone in an instant.
"Good night. If you're not used to missing me, then dream of me."
"Good night."
Catherine turned and walked through the door to see Marcus sitting in his wheelchair with a gossipy look on his face, his gaze fixed on her. Only when she entered did he cough twice.
Pretending nothing had happened, though his eyes kept looking at Catherine's face.
"Catherine, was it fun being with Alexander?"
"It was okay."
"That's good. Young people, you still need to be careful. I'm not old-fashioned, but you need to protect yourself. I'm really looking forward to having four generations under one roof. Tell me, would your children have the Windsor or Howard surname?"
Catherine looked helplessly at Marcus, who had clearly misunderstood.
What was Marcus talking about?
She and Alexander weren't even married yet. How did he get to talking about children?
"Grandpa, what are you trying to say?"
Marcus hugged the pillow on the sofa and smiled: "I'm just reliving what it feels like to hold a baby. Our family hasn't had little children in so many years. I'm really looking forward to it!"
Catherine struggled to speak, "Grandpa, you could have Charles work on this. He's the oldest child in the Windsor family. It really shouldn't be my turn."
Marcus perked up immediately.
"Either way works! I'll push him tomorrow! You go upstairs and rest."
"Good night."
Catherine turned to go upstairs. Before closing her door, she could still hear Marcus hugging the pillow and giggling foolishly, apparently naming his future great-grandchild.
She quickly assembled a miniature laptop, her slender jade-like fingers typing rapidly, pulling up the dark web page.
"Send this video to the person in charge of the Hughes family under the name of Faceless Ones."
Jared opened the video and spat out his instant noodles.
"The Hughes family is so bold? They actually dare to make a move against you!"
"I'll send it right away. Do you need me to include any message?"
Catherine's expression was cold as she said flatly, "Tell them to prepare three hundred million dollars. Otherwise, the video will be sent to the Windsor family. Either pay up or wait to die."
The Hughes family had challenged her limits again and again. Did they really think she wouldn't fight back?
Her counterattack was something ordinary people couldn't handle.
